Dental plaque has been suggested as a reservoir for Helicobacter pylori but the hypothesis that the oral microflora may be a permanent reservoir of H. pylori is still controversial. The aims of this study were to determine the presence of H. pylori DNA in the gastric antrum and dental plaque of a Venezuelan population by PCR and to investigate the relationship between this infection and the oral hygiene index. Thirty-two patients from the Hospital Universitario de Caracas, attending for routine gastroscopy, and 20 asymptomatic subjects (control group) were evaluated. The patients' gingiva and plaque were assessed by the gingival and plaque indices of Sillness and Löe. Supragingival plaque was analysed by a PCR for a specific internal urease gene. Gastric antrum biopsies were taken for histological examination and PCR. H. pylori was detected in antral samples from 24 (75%) of 32 patients, all of whom had chronic gastritis. Helicobacter pylori detection in oral cavity has lead to the question whether it has a significant importance for the local pathology or for the gastro-intestinal tract. Multiple research conducted in the last twenty years have certified that H. pylori exists in the dental plaque, saliva, aphthous ulceration (RAU), but controversy still exists regarding their contribution as a principal infection or reinfection factor at the gastric level of these reservoirs of Helicobacter. The implications in local pathology seem to be especially in parodontal disease and the pathology of the mucosa.

This study consisted in the comparison of the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) present in the stomach and in saliva of a sample of Portuguese adolescents and the assessment of the association between H. pylori infection with socio-demographic variables and prevalence of dental caries.
Helicobacter pylori is a major etiologic factor in the development of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Controversially, the oral cavity has been proposed as a reservoir for this bacterium. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of H. pylori in saliva and dental plaque of adult patients affected by periodontal disease, with or without gastrointestinal symptoms, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Suitable PCR primers were designed using sequences of H. pylori DNA from the GenBank database. Chronic periodontal disease was clinically and radiologically diagnosed. The samples for PCR were obtained from periodontal pockets. Cell lysate was centrifuged and used as a DNA source for the PCR assays. The PCR products were analyzed in agarose gels and the sizes of the amplicons were estimated by comparison with DNA size markers.
