Life-History Traits of the Black Scorpionfish ( Scorpaena porcus ) in Southeastern Black Sea

2019

Scorpaena porcus is one of the most important members of rock and reef community in the Black Sea. The present study aimed to investigate the bio-ecological properties of S. porcus in the Eastern Black Sea. The growth, age, and sex compositions, feeding and reproduction biology of 1061 individuals were examined. The total length of the individuals ranged between 6.7 and 25.5 cm. The observed age ranged up to 8 years in both the sexes; the oldest individual both in males and females was 8 years of age. The von Bertalanffy growth function parameters in the samples were L∞=22.15 cm, k=0.287, t0= -1.577 (year) and W∞=238.14 g. The sex ratio (male/female) was 1/1.13. S. porcus fed most frequently on fish and decapods in all seasons. The reproduction period was identified to be between June and October, as evident by GSI values and macroscopic and histological analysis of gonads. Hydrated oocytes first appeared in June on the histological examinations; however, the atresia was highest in ...

State of Black Scorpionfish (Scorpaena porcus Linnaeus, 1758) Inhabited Coastal Area of Sevastopol Region (Black Sea) in 1998-2008

Turkish Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2011

Data about scorpion fish population state during 1998-2008 were presented. It was determined that age composition of Scorpaena porcus from 1998 to 2008 has been widened. The amount of females and males of different age groups in last years (2007-2008) was optimal, but from 1998 to 2005 females, especially older specimens, dominated. Condition factor increased. However, scorpion fish bodies smaller growth and weight decrease were noticed, that demonstrates negative influence of complex of factors. Such effects may be some result of changing environmental conditions in the study area such as pollution and temperature rise.

Age, growth and reproduction of the black scorpionfish, Scorpaena porcus (Pisces, Scorpaenidae), on the Black Sea coast of Turkey

Age, growth and reproduction of the black scorpionfish, Scorpaena porcus were studied in specimens from the coast of the Sinop Peninsula (Black Sea) between March 2002 and April 2003 in order to characterize these population parameters in comparison to specimens from populations of nearby regions. A total of 1086 specimens was captured by beam trawl at the depths between 0 and 30 m. The total number of females (510) was significantly higher than that of males (373). Total length of males and females ranged between 5.7 and 23.6 cm, and 4.9 and 31.7 cm, respectively. The length–weight relationship showed a positive allometric growth. Females grew faster and reached a larger size at age than males (L ¥ = 111.9 cm, K = 0.035 year)1 , u¢ = 2.64 for females, and L ¥ = 74.6 cm, K = 0.054 year)1 , u¢ = 2.49 for males). The age range estimated was up to 8 years for females and 5 years for males. Reproduction likely occurs between June and September. Sex ratio varied greatly with season, perhaps indicating different seasonal migratory patterns in adults of different sex. An inverse correlation between gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) was evident during the reproduction seasons. The mean size at first sexual maturity was 17.5 cm TL for females, and 16.7 cm TL for males.

Reproductive biology of female sawcheek scorpionfish, Brachypterois serrulata (Richardson, 1846) (Teleostei; Scorpaenidae) from Visakhapatnam Coast, India

Marine Life Science & Technology, 2021

We examined the reproductive biology of sawcheek scorpionfish, Brachypterois serrulata, collected from Visakhapatnam fish landing center (fishing area covered 16.98°–20.20°N, 82.19°–86.53°E). We studied the annual reproductive cycle, fecundity, size at first maturity, mode of spawning with periodical changes and histological preparations. Size distribution and size at sexual maturity were calculated as 108 mm TL for females. The mean gonado somatic index values of female increased rapidly from January to December, and reached its peak during January and February. The fecundity of the fish species is determined by the size and weight of the individuals. The fecundity varied from 1896 to 20,488, with an average of 5721.90 ova.
