FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ATTITUDES OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS THE STUDY OF MATHEMETICS

t is a known fact that there exist behavioral difficulties among Mathematics students in Estiwani as a result of unresolved attitudinal issues that either the students are not aware of, or that the issues are not properly dealt with. This work seeks to investigate some factors influencing the attitude of secondary school students toward studying Mathematics in the Manzini region. Five schools consisting of two boys-only, two girls-only, and one mixed school were been carefully selected for the investigation. A total of 200 students and 15 qualified teachers were randomly and actively engaged. A combination of the discrete and continuous data collected through observations and using a well-designed questionnaire was carefully analyzed from their graphical representations. It was found that the majority of the students showed a huge gap in the content knowledge and also presented a clear negative attitude towards Mathematics as a subject. Some of the factors responsible for this worrying pattern, as shown by the analysis include poor background from their primary schools, ineffective teaching methods by their teachers, and lack of motivation by their parents among others. Training programs for teachers particularly on the use of technology and teaching aids to better disseminate the contents and the rewards were also highlight
ABSTRACT In this research it was carried out to examine the relationship between elementary students' attitudes towards mathematics and studying to mathematics lesson. For this purpose, the relationship between elementary students 'attitudes towards mathematics and studying to mathematics lesson of 500 primary school students in Istanbul is investigated. It is investigated whether there is a relationship between mathematics attitude and students' gender, and if there is someone that help to study lesson at home, and whether they have their own room and computer, and for what purpose the computer is used, and their family's economic level, and the duration of regular lesson study, and the duration of daily mathematics lesson study. To provide the data that is required for the purpose of the study; questionnaire containing demographic characteristics and "Mathematics Attitude Scale" that is developed by Baykul (1990), were used to collect data. It has been seen that there is significant differences, among students using the computer to prepare homeworks and all other students on behalf of using the computer to prepare homeworks. It was found a significant differences in mathematics attitude on behalf of the students who study regulary every day lesson; by comparison of students those study regulary lesson every day and the students those don't study regulary every day. Significant differences were found between the students who study lesson more than 2 hours a day and all other students,on behalf of the students who study lesson more than 2 hours a day. Also significant differences were found between Also a significant differences were found between children of 800-2000 TL-income families and children from other families, on behalf of children of 800-2000 TL-income families. This research, which is carried out in Kinik, İzmir, aims at determining the reasons of students’ attitude towards Maths. Sixth class students from Kinik town make up population of the research which has been carried out as the model of survey. The sample of the research has been determined by the method of “purposeful sampling”. It is constituted of 152 students at the sixth grade. Collected data has been transferred into SPSS and the statistical process such as, analysis of average, standard deviation, T-test and one way analysis of variance procedures have been realized. It has been identified that the students who gets higher grades at Maths have got better attitude towards Maths than the ones who got lower grades at Maths. It has been identified that there has been no relationship between the students’ attitude towards Maths and their families’ income, their parents’ educational status, their parents’ occupation and the teachers’ way of teaching.

The research investigated the effect of socioeconomic status, gender, perceived parental influences, teacher affective support, classroom instruction and previous achievement on students' attitude towards mathematics. The comparison of these effects was also done between urban and rural school students. This research employed a cross-sectional quantitative design based on a structural equation modelling approach. The sample consisted of 808 students from ten secondary schools in Sabah, three of which were urban and seven were rural schools. Findings showed positive relationships exist between perceived parental influences (r = .231), teacher affective support (r = .242), classroom instruction (r = .439), and previous achievement (r = .284) with students' attitude towards mathematics. The multigroup analysis for urban and rural students showed similar results as the whole student group. However, for urban students, classroom instruction (r = 0.352) and previous achievement (r =-0.363) had the greatest impact on attitude towards mathematics. For rural students, the highest impact on attitude towards mathematics was from classroom instruction (r = 0.452) and teacher affective support (r = 0.246). The least impact for both groups was perceived parental influence. This study implied that factors affected students' attitude towards mathematics in rural and urban secondary students are different.

The present study attempts to assess the attitudes of secondary school students towards Mathematics. To the study, the researcher has adopted convenient sampling method. Both male and female students constitute the population under study. A questionnaire has been administered by the researcher on a total of 60 students studying in State Board Schools in Mumbai namely Rizvi Springfield High School, Shri. V.V.K. Sharma High School & Bandra Hindu Association High School. The data collected has been analysed using mean which is a measure of central tendency. The results are presented graphically and interpreted thereof. The findings suggest that most of the students have a positive attitude towards the subject while only a certain percentage of the students are not in favour of the subject.

This study was carried out in order to determine how students’ attitudes towards mathematics changed according to their school and grade levels, and to examine which factors affected students’ attitudes from the views of students and teachers. This study was conducted with 698 primary third to eighth grade students, 367 of whom were male and 331 of whom were female and 6 mathematics teachers studying in those schools. Data of the study were collected by means of two instruments, Mathematics Attitudes Scale (MAS) and semi-structured interview. Obtained data were analyzed both statistically and descriptively. At the end of the study, it was observed that there is a meaningful difference in students’ attitudes towards mathematics according to schools. Primary Students' Attitude towards Mathematics in a Selected School of west Guji Zone; Oromia

Students' attitude towards mathematics has been a factor that is known to influence students' achievement in mathematics. The purpose of this study is to find out the students attitude towards mathematics and find out gender difference in attitude towards mathematics in a selected school of West Guji Zone. A total of 300 Primary students were administered with a questionnaire to find out their attitudes towards mathematics. The students answered questions regarding their personal confidence to mathematics and perceived usefulness of mathematics. The results show that the students' positive attitude towards mathematics is medium and there is no gender difference in their attitudes.

The main objective of this paper is to recognize how certain distinct but interrelated factors could lead to an interpretation of students' performance in mathematics. Since, students may like, appreciate, or may dislike mathematics on the contrary. A long-term favorable or unfavourable willingness to mathematics may be defined. It is necessary to create and maintain a positive approach towards studying math. There is a connection between a student's attitude to mathematics and their mathematics faculty. There are several other variables that may impact this attitude towards learning mathematics. A questionnaire has been designed for this research which includes numerous questions, to recognize variables impacting rural areas in Assam. 13 colleges in the rural region of Assam are surveyed in the questionnaire.
