Challenges and Coping Mechanisms in Online Classes of Freshmen Master of Arts in Education

The goal of the study was to identify the difficulties and coping mechanisms faced by first-year students enrolled in online Master of Arts in Education courses at St. Peter's College in Iligan City during the first semester of the academic year 2022-2023. The survey provided information on the respondent profiles in terms of their age, sex, civil status, career, technology usage, and monthly family income. Also, the difficulties of taking lessons online, including isolation, instructor ability, motivation, and features. The respondents' coping strategies for the difficulties of taking online classes as well as for course, individual, technological, and environmental difficulties. Significant differences in the challenges and coping mechanisms for the challenges in the online classes of the respondents when grouped according to their socio-demographic profile and significant relationship between the respondents' challenges in online classes and their coping mechanisms. Family monthly income and age mediated the relationship between respondents' challenges and coping mechanisms were determined. The data gathered led to develop an action plan and made recommendations for this study. The study used the descriptive-correlational research method. It involved 149 students as respondents. The data used an adapted questionnaire that was validated through pilot testing. The result showed that most of the respondent's challenges in online classes were motivation, features of online classes, and isolation. The respondents' coping mechanisms for the challenges were in terms of environmental challenges; nevertheless, the other coping mechanisms-course challenges, technological challenges, and individual challenges-were also affirmed to have a better coping mechanism in their online class. The challenges faced by the respondents did significantly differed with the gadgets they used and their family's monthly income and coping mechanisms for online class challenges did significantly differed by their family's monthly income. The challenges in online classes were significantly correlated with their coping mechanisms. The challenges and coping mechanisms are not mediated by family monthly income and by age.

Problems faced by school and college students during online learning

With the emergence of COVID 19 pandemic, rise in the online learning has been increased worldwide. The mode of learning has been changed to online. Schools were shut for a longer period of time because of physical distancing to ensure limited contact with people during COVID 19. So it has become very important to start the classes for the students in order to minimize the delay in the course. The present study was conducted to find out the problems faced by the school and college students due to online learning during COVID 19 pandemic. The study was carried out on sample size of 120 students. Descriptive research design was used for conducting the study. The information was collected and gathered through Google forms. Analysis was done on the basis of the collected data. Findings of the study revealed that most of the respondents were facing technical issues and majority of them were also suffering from various health related problems due to prolong sitting. In order to deal with all the problems, some suggestions and coping strategies were suggested to them for their health and well-being.

Online Learning Challenges and Coping Mechanisms of the Students in a Private Catholic Institution

The continuous proliferation of COVID-19 is taking a toll on the education sector. The temporary closure of schools, the cancellation of face-to-face classes, and the forced transition from traditional learning to an online setting are overwhelming for the majority. Hence, this research was conducted to determine the challenges and coping mechanisms of the Grade 12 Senior High School students of Saint Mary's University. This study utilized a mixed-method design involving qualitative and quantitative methods. A total of 249 grade 12 students participated in the data gathering using a modified questionnaire. The gathered data was then analyzed and interpreted through descriptivecomparative-correlational statistics and thematic analysis. The study revealed the level of challenges experienced by the grade 12 students of Saint Mary's University when grouped according to 4 domains. In terms of technological literacy and competency challenges and learning resources challenges, the students experienced a slightly challenging level while their self-regulation challenges and the learning environment challenges resulted to a moderately challenging level. However, no significant differences were found between the challenges experienced by the grade 12 students and their demographic profile variables including the strand, internet connectivity, gadget availability and work status. Moreover, the results of the qualitative responses show that the most effective coping mechanism for the students during online learning is time management. These infer that the students should focus on governing themselves and conforming to their surroundings when dealing with online classes.

Online Learning: Student Psychological Challenges During A Pandemic Covid-19

Full online learning sessions has been actively applied in teaching and learning as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Various SOPs have been outlined; including social distancing in which face-to-face encounters are avoided. As such, face-to-face learning in the classroom now has shifted towards full online teaching and learning. While full online learning is the best alternative at the moment, there are various constraints and challenges that need to be faced. This study aims to examine the psychological aspects of students in pursuing online learning. The respondents of the study involved semester 1, 3, 5, and 7 students who enrolled in the Bachelor's Degree in Arabic language Studies at Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA). The students had been following full online learning for a total of 1 semester or about 14 weeks. They were instructed to answer a distributed questionnaire. In addition, the students also left comments related to the challenges faced during the online learning session. The findings of the study showed that the overall psychological aspects of students were at a moderate level when following the fully online learning sessions, while other challenges faced by students include internet access problems, unconducive environment, workload from lecturers, and lack of cooperation from teammates. As such, these findings can be used as a guide by stakeholders in order to fully improve the online learning system.

A Phenomenological Study on Online Learning Set-up: Challenges and Coping Mechanisms of Senior High Students

During this pandemic, it is expected that students are to experience challenges in their learning with this new system. Thus, as a way to support themselves in their own homes, they find ways to cope that ease the weight of their challenges. According to Petroski's theory, the impact of the sudden changes of online learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic forced academic institutions and school faculty to try new learning set up to maintain the learning environment of the students. For many students, the sudden shift in their learning environment challenged their capability to transit from an environment that they are new (or they aren't used to) and make a new experience that contradicted themselves as learners for as they didn't have a choice to become online students. In this study, the researchers determine the different challenges the student participants are facing in this new learning system and their various ways of coping with it. The overall results of this study may benefit our educational system to be aware of the challenges the students are currently experiencing. It may help to support better and more efficient solutions for the teachers and students to fully adapt and significantly benefit and use their highest potential in learning with this new learning modality. This study employs the qualitative method to describe the challenges and coping mechanisms of the students in the Senior High School Department of LNU-ILS. In collecting and analyzing the data, A focus group discussion was held consisting of 5 student participants from the SHS department. The data gathered were then analyzed through a thematic analysis method, which yielded a significant range of challenges experienced by the senior high school students, from their personal, social, technical, and workplace challenges to various coping mechanisms with the said challenges.

The Coping Mechanisms of First-Year Students in the Online Classes

The study aimed to determine the coping mechanisms of first-year college students taking Bachelor of Special Needs Education in a state university in the online class setting. It utilized Colaizzi's (1978) descriptive phenomenological method which followed his seven-step method. Three emergent themes were revealed (1) coping mechanisms, (2) adjustment of 1st-year students to online classes, (3) perception of the effects of coping mechanisms. Most participants applied three coping mechanisms, and these were (1) meditation and (2) spirituality which are considered adaptive coping mechanisms, and (3) late-night internet usage, a maladaptive coping mechanism. The participants expressed their vulnerability as a 1st-year student in terms of unfamiliarity due to the absence of face-to-face interaction, being unaccustomed to the new college environment, pressure due to unfamiliar teacher-student dynamic, and pressure in studying at a state university.

Challenges of Students in Online Learning

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the university education system in Albania to operate in distance through information and communication technologies. The purpose of this study is to explore students' perceptions about accessibility, learner intentions, social and lecturer issues in online learning. In order to achieve the aim of the study, the quantitative method is used. The data are collected online through the completion of a survey which contains closed questions. The sample included in this study are students of bachelor and master degree (N = 236) who belong to the teaching programs from the University of Tirana and "Aleksander Moisiu" University of Durrës. The study points out some challenges faced by students during online learning which are related to online accessibility, lack of motivation of students and the barrier of their involvement in online group work activities. It was also noted that the online environment presents challenges for lecturers, which require a better mastery of digital competence by the academic staff. The findings of this study are designed to help policymakers, education executives and academic staff to have a clearer view and make the necessary interventions to overcome these challenges faced by students during online learning.

Students’ online learning challenges during the pandemic and how they cope with them: The case of the Philippines

Recently, the education system has faced an unprecedented health crisis that has shaken up its foundation. Given today's uncertainties, it is vital to gain a nuanced understanding of students' online learning experience in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many studies have investigated this area, limited information is available regarding the challenges and the specific strategies that students employ to overcome them. Thus, this study attempts to fill in the void. Using a mixed-methods approach, the findings revealed that the online learning challenges of college students varied in terms of type and extent. Their greatest challenge was linked to their learning environment at home, while their least challenge was technological literacy and competency. The findings further revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had the greatest impact on the quality of the learning experience and students' mental health. In terms of strategies employed by students, the most frequently used were resource management and utilization, help-seeking, technical aptitude enhancement, time management, and learning environment control. Implications for classroom practice, policy-making, and future research are discussed.
