Communicative Aspects of Multilingual Code Switching in Computer-Mediated Communication

The quintessential role of language has been punctiliously studied relative to intercultural communication, cultural heritage, social development, education, identity construction and many more domains. One forum wherein language is investigated is the Computer-mediated Communication (CMC) which provides a fertile ground for linguistic and sociolinguistic analyses. The present study aims at investigating the preferred codes used in code switching (CS), functions of CS, and the motives of users for employing CS in CMC. The present study was based on the investigation of 200 status updates and 100 wall posts of 50 Facebook accounts of students who are enrolled in a leading state university in Mindanao and professionals who graduated from the same university. Socio Linguistic Study of Code Switching of the Arabic Language Speakers on Social Networking

Researches on code-switching in the past have a concentration on the verbal language, few on its written form. This study attempts to cover and analyze the notion of code-switching in electronic contexts. The objective of this study is to discuss the code-switching functions performed by Arabic-English bilingual users in their Facebook interactions. The data of this study were collected from status updates posted by the bilingual users on their Facebook wall. They were classified and analyzed according to the functions they served in the Facebook context. Findings indicate that code switching occurs in online interaction to serve addressee specification, reiteration, message qualification, clarification, emphasis, checking, indicating emotions, availability, principle of economy and free switching functions. This study hopes to provide insights on the code-switching phenomenon in Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). Additionally, the findings of this study will be of value for the development of code-switching studies in the socio linguistic area.

CONVERSATIONAL ANALYSIS OF CODE-SWITCHING EXAMPLES OF ONLINE POSTS FROM GREEK INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS

Code-switching is a common language contact phenomenon found in bilingual and multilingual communities and has been defined as the alternative use between two or more languages (Clyne, 1987). The aim of the present study is to shed light to the underlying reasons behind the use of Code-switching between English and Greek, in the online context of the social networking site of Instagram. For the purpose of the present study, a digital ethnographic approach was adopted, where data were gathered from Instagram accounts of four female and four male Greek Instagram users, who were also interviewed in order to gain a better understanding behind the reasons that motivated them to employ Code-switching. The data were analyzed and categorized based on the Conversational Analysis approach proposed by Auer (1984) and the Code-switching typologies regarding their functions proposed by Tsilipakou (1999), Tsiplakou (2009) Hoffman (1991) and Georgakopoulou (2011); while also taking into consideration the participants’ comments and explanation prompting them to employ Code-switching. Based on the findings of the study, Code-switching is employed for a variety of reasons which cannot be analyzed superficially but need specific attention, since each user employed CS for specific reasons that often did not match the researcher’s original assumptions. However, some of the most frequent reasons that they employed Code-switching were: English terms are more popular than their Greek equivalents in online environments, they express humor, they are meant to be precise and express in-group solidarity.

Most authors admit that code-switching is the process of switching different languages, their varieties, speaking styles, etc. Today the majority of people in the world are multilingual and often mix languages in different ways, which makes code-switching a quite common global phenomenon. Code-switching incorporates government, cultural, religious and network contexts, and the frequency of code-switching in such multilingual conversations is an indicator of the global dominance of multilingualism. Online communication fosters social communicative practices consisting of code-switching and marks the development of verbal behaviour of multilingual communities. Code-switching also affects language visuality, its images are tools for the social construction of reality. The developed verbal practices support effective communication and affect the expression of new meanings. The article aims at presenting the features of code-switching in digital communication with 8 examples of different length, topic and author, in which the native Lithuanians code-switched to English and used elements of the Internet language. These examples were taken from the social networks Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and the authors analyzed the grammar, spelling and punctuation of both Lithuanian and the English words, the type and use of the code-switched English elements, special characters, abbreviations, emoji and other features of the Internet language. The results show that online communication is not entirely textual, with various means of text composition communicators make their code-switched English elements more visible and alter the appearance of messages. Such practices correspond to the features of social networks and seem to follow the popular Internet culture trends.

Why do People Code-switch: A Sociolinguistic Approach

This paper sets out at the beginning different definitions and approaches to the linguistic phenomenon -Code-Switching. Through my work, I will highlight five different factors that motivate code-switching in a bilingual speaker although the reasons for code-switching are many . I will talk about the role of ethnic solidarity, social class, topic, affection, and persuasion in motivating switching codes. I will use different approaches and case-studies conducted by researchers from inside and outside Lebanon to back up my discussion.

A Sociolinguistic Study on Code Switching Among Overseas Indonesian Students on Facebook Comments

This aim of this study is to examine the use of code switching on Facebook comments. This study investigates the types of code switching that occurred on the Facebook comments of overseas Indonesian students, the shifts of code switching between female and male students, and the reasons why overseas Indonesian students use code switching. The study respondents were overseas Indonesian students who had already signed up as Facebook users. A qualitative approach using descriptive methods was used. – Language is essential for communication. People who are involved in cross cultural communication have to be bilingual in order to interact with people from a different language background (Blackwell. Woolard, K. (2005). Bilingualism opens up various new pathways of thoughts, expressions, and it helps to reduce misunderstanding in interactions (Hidayat, T. 2012). The purpose of this review is to find out how code-switching plays a vital role in language communication especially in the social media such as Facebook, Twitter, SMS and Chat. This study reviewed fifteen journal articles to examine the ways code-switching was used. The review was to discover social phenomena and authentic identities of social actors. The study discovered that code-switching has been used widely to unmask bilinguals' cultural background and group identity during online communication via Facebook. Finally, code-switching can be used to obtain positive feelings to the interlocutor, which here was combined with introducing humour as an in-group marker, quoting, and to some extent topic specificity as well as possible vocabulary limitation in one language or the other, in the online conversation by bilinguals such as to express group solidarity.

Polish-English Code-Switching in the Language of Polish Facebook Users

Social networking services, such as Facebook, are important channels of communication both for monolingual users and for those having various degrees of proficiency in L2, with the latter deploying expression both from L1 and L2. It can, therefore, be presumed that communication on FB plays a role in practicing the use of L2. One of the phenomena that can be examined in relation to that are various forms of code-switching. There is animmense research gap related to Polish-English code-switching appearing on this SNS. To obtain a full picture of the issue, the paper identifies and discusses types, strategies, and functions of Polish-English code-switches found in posts and comments published by Poles on Facebook in 2014–2019. Computational Linguistic Features of Code-switching Amongst Native Fiji-Hindi Speakers on Facebook

Decade or two ago, the propensity to study code-switching has only shed light on its spoken discourse, but very few on written. Linguistically, this paper sought to explore the code-switching features amongst native Fiji-Hindi speakers on social networking site, Facebook. It will be supplemented by the functions of code-switching performed by thirty-five native Fiji-Hindi and English (L 2 ) bilingual speakers’ during online Facebook interactions. The data pertaining to study was collated from a period of within six months based on the status updates that were posted by native Fiji-Hindi speakers on their Facebook wall.
