Background: Occupational accidents represent one of the major problems in developing and developed countries. Deaths caused by occupational accidents result in loss of life, lost working hours, and related costs. These accidents create a lot of waste for the community and labor organizations. Moreover, they result in socioeconomic losses such as disability, loss of work time, and increased medical care expenses. Objectives: Despite the existence of extensive studies, a practical method for calculating the cost of accidents is still not clear; consequently, the aim of the present study is to provide a new framework for the calculation of the (direct and indirect) costs of accidents in construction. Materials and Methods: In this paper, the cost of accidents in the construction industry in Tehran, Iran in 2013 were calculated using a new, structured, six-step approach. First, the results were classified into five groups according to the intensity of accident, as follows: 1, short-term absences; 2, long-term absence; 3, small inability; 4, total disability; and 5, death. Moreover, the six following groups of imposed costs were identified: 1, production disturbance costs; 2, human capital costs; 3, medical costs; 4, administrative costs; 5, transfer costs; and 6. other costs. These groups were classified according to the direct or indirect costs resulting from the incident and the costs imposed on workers, employers, and society. Finally, the data were analyzed using statistical tests. Results: Significant proportions of the cost of construction accidents involve production disturbance costs, human capital costs, medical costs, administrative costs, transfer costs, and other costs. The construction sector represents worldwide a benchmark for the development of the scales of the economy. In Mexico, despite the boom in housing construction, many construction companies are bankrupt. This situation is worrisome because, in addition, thousands of jobs are generated in this sector, but at the same time, it is here where many accidents occur that immediately result in social and economic effects. For this reason, and despite the advances that have been shown in Mexico, it is necessary to continue working on the analysis of the situation, since, even today, there are businessmen and engineers at all levels who consider that the prevention of occupational risks is an unnecessary expense, the level of awareness has not yet been reached, much less cultural that safety in the works must be an essential part of the quality of the product. In this same sense, construction companies, clients and society itself must be aware of the degree of economic impact caused by accidents and the urgency of carrying out strategic and preventive actions from the moment the activities are planned.
An Occupational Profile of People Injured in Accidents at Work in the Polish Construction Industry

The construction industry in Poland and in the world is characterized by a high level of threat to the life and health of workers. In accident processes, a man exists in a triple role, namely: a decision maker, a perpetrator of an accident and a victim. Statistical data published by the Central Statistical Office regarding the causes of accidents indicates that human causes account for around 60% of all reported cases. Identification of the factors affecting the accident rate and also the direct causes of accidents is the first step in determining the directions of preventive action. The aim of the research conducted by the authors of this article is to present the occupational characteristics of people injured in accidents at work in the Polish construction industry. The article presents the results obtained from the analysis of occupational accidents that occurred in the years 2008-2014 in five voivodships of Poland, namely: Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Slaskie, Lubelskie, Dolnoslaskie and Lubuskie. The paper identifies and examines the impact of the following characteristics: the employment status of a victim, occupation, age, length of service, preparation of the employee to perform duties at a workplace and the size of an enterprise in which the accident took place. 485 occupational accidents were analysed, 37% of which were fatal accidents, 61% were severe, and 2% were light.
Accidents at Work and Costs Analysis: A Field Study in a Large Italian Company

Accidents at work are still a heavy burden in social and economic terms, and action to improve health and safety standards at work offers great potential gains not only to employers, but also to individuals and society as a whole. However, companies often are not interested to measure the costs of accidents even if cost information may facilitate preventive occupational health and safety management initiatives. The field study, carried out in a large Italian company, illustrates technical and organisational aspects associated with the implementation of an accident costs analysis tool. The results indicate that the implementation (and the use) of the tool requires a considerable commitment by the company, that accident costs analysis should serve to reinforce the importance of health and safety prevention and that the economic dimension of accidents is substantial. The study also suggests practical ways to facilitate the implementation and the moral acceptance of the accounting technology.
An exporatory study on workplace accidents and illnesses cost analysis tools

Until the present, addressing the economic dimension of work accidents and occupational diseases in Romania has been sporadic, relatively unsystematic and unenforceable. Any quantitative assessment of the consequences of accidents and occupational diseases involves determining the cost associated with these undesirable events, which can be used as an economic indicator. Embedding the labor safety criterion among the performance criteria of a company makes its profit directly conditional on the fulfillment of legal requirements on working conditions, so that general management must include among its objectives and maximizing the results of preventive activity. In this context, the paper presents the results of a critical comparative analysis conducted on tools developed worldwide to analyze the costs associated with accidents. The main purpose of the study was to establish the feasibility of introducing the most appropriate tools in the practice of romanian companies, in order to optimize the cost-benefit of investments in occupational safety and health.
Analysis of the Development of Accident Situations in the Construction Industry

The construction industry is characterized by a high level of hazards to the life and health of employees and by a high accident rate. Knowledge relating to the course of the accident process plays a major role in work safety assessment and in accident prevention. On the basis of the EUROSTAT accident model a comprehensive general model of the development of an accident situation has been developed. The model enables the different possible configurations of the events occurring in accident processes in the construction industry to be traced and the most probable scenario of the events to be determined.
Analysis of the State of the Accident Rate in the Construction Industry in European Union Countries

The article presents an analysis and evaluation of the accident rate in selected European Union countries. On the basis of available statistical data, the analysis of accidents in various sectors of the European Union economy was carried out. Afterwards, a ranking of countries regarding accidents in the construction industry was developed. For the selected representative countries, analysis of changes in the indicators which characterize the accident rate during the period between 2008 and 2012 was carried out. Conclusions resulting from the conducted research were formulated.
Analysis of the causes and consequences of accidents occurring in two constructions projects
Work done on construction sites is considered to be high risk, resulting in instances of occupational accidents that impact the physical, mental and social integrity of the workers as well as company productivity. Therefore, the objective of this article is to analyze the causes and consequences of occupational accidents occured in the second semester of 2012 in two construction projects in Neiva, Colombia. The approach is documentary, supported by information sources of occupational accidents reported to the Administration of Occupational Accidents (ARL in Spanish); the model developed by Frank E. Bird was used to determine the causes of these accidents. A total of 117 accidents were analyzed, detecting 195 failures of control, 136 personal factors, 112 work related factors, 151 unsafe acts and 54 unsafe conditions; some accidents had more than one cause. In this manner, the authors conclude that the largest percentage of occupational accidents were caused by lack of control, followed by unsafe acts. Therefore, the use of programs of risk management priorities is recommended, based on the proper identification of hazards, allowing the mitigation and control of risk; likewise developing a culture of self-care in workers is recommended.

Occupational accidents cause important social and economic problems by loss of life and physical injuries. Construction sector involves high risk due to its production processes and labor intensive characteristic and because of occupational accidents the sector brings up against financial loss in large scale. In developing countries, construction sector is one of the most important sectors that have a great contribution to economic development with its employment capacity and added-value to the economy. On the other hand, due to the lack of preventive measures, occupational accidents occur, frequently in construction in Turkey.
