Background: The Back pain affects about 20% of the population in Bangladesh in each year between the ages of 30-60 years. A well-defined pathology is identified in only about 15% of patients. Objective: To identify the association of hyperuricemia in patients with chronic low back pain. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 180 patients among the ages of 18 to 75 years with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Data was collected through a structured questionnaire. X-rays and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine had been used to evaluate any findings in terms of low back pain. Serum uric acid (sUA) levels had been tested and recorded. Results: Joint pain (p < 0.001), lumbar disc prolapse (p = 0.023), and disc degeneration (p = 0.011) were more in High-sUA than Low-sUA group. Background: To determine the prevalence and association of hyperuricemia with genetic factors, dietary and alcohol consumption, metabolic syndrome, diuretic use and chronic renal disease in patients presenting with joint pain in the outpatient department (OPD) at a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan and to establish a significant correlation between concentration of serum creatinine and triglyceride with uric acid concentration statistically.Methods: This study was conducted on 2200 patients. Prevalence of hyperuricemia in Sukkur; Pakistan: A cross sectional survey

Objectives: To find out the frequency uric acid levels in Pakistani general population. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Hira Medical Centre Sukkur. Period: July 1 2018 to July 31, 2018. Materials and Methods: The survey for was conducted in various hospitals and clinics all over Pakistan. 900 numbers of questionnaires were distributed of which 801 numbers responded. Those who agreed to be part of this study were asked. Uric acid levels were assessed by using UASure Blood Uric Acid Monitoring System. Those with greater than 6 mg/dl were classified as hyperuricemia according to American college of Rheumatology. Descriptive analysis was performed with SPSS software version 23. Frequency of patients with hyperuricemia was calculated. Stratification with respect to gender and age was calculated via cross tabulation. Abstract Background: Joint pain is the most common complaint from the patient presenting to orthopedic clinics. Elevated uric acid levels in plasma result in accumulation of the same in the joint spaces causing inflammation. Gouty arthritis has dual management, pharmacological and dietary management. Study Design: Observational study. Study setting: Consultant Orthopedic OPD of Liaquat University of medical and health sciences. Study Duration: 3months from November 2016-feb2017. Sample Size: 100 Patients. Sampling technique: probability sampling. Methodology: Serum uric acid levels were measured through device method with the permission of study patients. Statistical analysis: Results were compiled using SPSS 21. Data analysis was performed using t-test. Results: Study population male/female ratio was 1:1. Mean of the serum uric acid was found to be 4.91mg/dl while the range of the same was 10mg/dl. The minimum value for uric acid was 2.0mg/dl and the maximum 12.mg/dl. 10% of the population showed elevated uric acid levels >7.5 mg/dl while 15% of the patients were having a border line values of 6.5mg/dl and 22% of the study population was found to have their uric acid levels above the optimal level (6mg/dl). There was a significant difference between the mean of male and female patient p-0.002. Conclusion: It is concluded that 47% of the study population was suffering from the uric acid levels above the optimal levels and were higher in females as compared to males. Background: Beta thalassemia (β-thalassemia), which is one of the most common monogenic diseases in the world, is caused by a decrease or lack of synthesis of the beta-globin chain. Patients with thalassemia major are associated with ineffective erythropoiesis, chronic hemolysis of erythrocytes, and increased production of uric acid. Complications such as musculoskeletal complications, osteoporosis have been reported in these patients. Studies in general populations have also shown that elevated serum uric acid levels are associated with increased bone mineral density. Patients and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study was performed on 48 patients in Yasuj City (Southwest Iran). We collect the information in the patients' file and analyzed blood samples of patients Thalassemia Intermedia referring to Yasuj city. The tests were performed by the reference laboratory of the Blood Transfusion Organization of Iran. Statistical significance was based on two-sided design-based tests evaluated at the 0.05 level of significance. All the statistical analyses were performed by SPSS 20 software. Results: The mean age of the patients was 46.15 ± 13.05 years. The uric acid level had a significant relationship with the Lumbar Z score in men patients (p-value=0.02). The mean Lumbar Z score in people with uric acid levels less than 6.1 was in the osteoporotic range and people with uric acid levels more were equal to 6.2 in the osteopenia range. Most people with thalassemia intermedia had osteopenia, but no significant relationship was found between blood uric acid levels in women and bone mineral density. Conclusion: Most people with thalassemia intermedia had osteopenia, but no significant relationship was found between blood uric acid levels in women and bone mineral density.
The Frequency of Different Risk Factors for Lower Back Pain in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Background and purpose Lower back pain is an extremely common health problem and causes more global disability than any other condition. Moreover, it causes an enormous economic burden in both developed and developing countries. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of different risk factors for lower back pain in a tertiary care centre in Islamabad. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at Shifa International Hospital's neurosurgery and neurology outpatient department from September 2016 to February 2017. A total of 375 patients with lower back pain were interviewed regarding risk factors. Results Among the 375 patients, the majority were men (51.7%, n = 194). The mean patient age was 42.05 ± 15.35 years (mean ± standard deviation); most of the patients belonged to the 21- to 40-year-old age group (48%, n = 180). The majority (78.4%) had chronic back pain. Background: Backache is a national, personal and clinical problem. It is experienced by most of the population at some time and is a drain on the nation’s resources. Personally, it is distressing because it can remain a major unresolved dilemma and clinically it poses challenges in diagnosis and treatment.Methods: The present cross sectional study was conducted among 200 patients presenting with chronic low back pain, in the OPD of Post Graduate Department of Orthopaedics, Govt. Background: Low back pain (LBP) can affect any population and is experienced by any race, gender or age group. The lifetime prevalence of LBP is reported to vary from 44.4% to 90% in different populations in Western countries and 36% to 70.9% in African countries. Studies have been conducted in developed countries, or urban areas of developing countries regarding LBP and they report the LBP prevalence to vary from 48% to 90%. However, very limited literature about LBP and its risk factors in rural areas exist. Introduction: This study aims to determine the urine concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) biomarkers with pain intensity in a patient with low back pain (LBP) compared to healthy controls. Also, the correlation between these biomarkers and clinical findings of pain intensity was determined during 25 weeks to find a molecular diagnostic factor of disease progression. A 22‑year‑old man patient with a three-month history of progressive LBH and gait instability and an age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) matched healthy man was enrolled for 25 weeks. Hyperuricemia has became the public health issue worldwide. Hematology parameters abnormality is considered to be one of the factors relating the disease such as hyperuricemia. Current study suggest that body mass index (BMI) related to uric acid (UA) levels. The aim of the study was to examine the association between uric acid levels and hematological parameters and BMI among hyperuricemia patients. This was cross sectional study with 50 hyperuricemia patients in Hortus Medicus clinic. Results demonstrate that of the participants, 54% were women but the mean of UA levels was higher in the men (8,41 + 0,80 mg/dL) than in women (7,38 + 0,97 mg/dL). In BMI classified, the mean BMI for men was normoweight, and the women was overweight. The mean of hematology parameters in both of sex were normal range.
