The study group covered 7,716 adolescents: 5,086 children attending high school and secondary schools and 2,630 university students. Low physical activity was noted among 57% of schoolchildren and 20.84% of students. Analysis of the level of physical activity according to the IPAQ indicated that it was lower among girls, compared to boys. An additional analysis, with the consideration of the place of residence, showed that the highest percentage of the population with low physical activity was noted in the rural areas (29.30%), while among the urban inhabitants of cities with a population above 100,000 it was on the level of 23.69% and 20.57%. Median for weekly physical activity by respondents` gender was on the level of 1,554.00 MET*min. weekly among females, and 2,611.00 MET*min. weekly among males (p<0.000). The highest weekly physical activity expressed in MET*min. was observed among the inhabitants of towns with a population less than 100,000, whereas among the rural population and inhabitants of large cities with a population of over 100,000 the weekly physical activity was on a similar level (1,830.50 and 1,962.00 respectively). An extended analysis of respondents' physical activity showed that during the day students spend significantly more time in a sedentary position, compared to schoolchildren. The presented results of studies indicate the necessity to continue and intensify actions to promote various forms of physical activity among students and schoolchildren. A constant decrease in physical activity observed among children and adolescents suggests that it is necessary to pay greater attention to this social group while developing health programmes.

Central European journal of public health, 2018

The aim of this study was to analyze adolescents' physical activity (PA) in two different educational settings, and to estimate the association between meeting PA recommendations and specific characteristics of adolescents' lifestyle. The study was carried out in the Moravia region of the Czech Republic and in the Silesia-Opole region of Poland. In total, 1,846 participants completed the long International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-long) using the online Indares system. Results showed that the Polish sample was significantly more physically active than the Czech one concerning school PA (p < 0.001; η = 0.07). Comparing by gender, significant differences were found in vigorous PA (p < 0.001; η = 0.05) and moderate PA (p < 0.001; η = 0.08) in both samples. The recommendations for vigorous PA are met by 45.9% of Czech boys and 33.4% of girls; and by 64.5% of Polish boys and 51.3% of girls. Participation in organized PA was the main correlate to achieve the ...

Level and determinants of physical activity among school adolescents in Poland

Annals of agricultural and environmental medicine : AAEM, 2014

The recognition of adolescents' physical activity has become one of the serious challenges of the modern times, as a concern about the future health of societies. The major goal of the presented study was to discover the level of physical activity among Polish adolescents aged 16-18, and the factors which condition this level. The investigations were carried out in 2011, among 2,974 school adolescents from various locations in Poland - 1,790 girls (60.2%), and 1,184 boys (39.8%). As a study method, a short version of the IPAQ was applied. The results of the study indicated that a larger number of girls than boys show a low level of physical activity. With respect to activity among boys, higher values of intensive and moderate efforts are noted, while in girls, higher values of activities related to walking. It was confirmed that the level of physical activity does not depend on the place of residence. However, the number of physical exercise classes attended is a significant fac...

Study and evaluation of physical activity of youth from the Visegrad countries in relation to the WHO recommendations

Roczniki Państwowego Zakładu Higieny, 2019

Background. In recent years, the subject literature has provided concrete recommendations concerning health with regard to specific parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to indicate appropriate physical activity standards for proper development at various stages of human ontogenesis. Objective. The aim of the work was knowledge of the level of physical activity of high school youth in the Visegrad countries, including gender indications, to demonstrate whether the WHO recommendations are fulfilled. Material and methods. The research was conducted in students from four Visegrad countries: the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. As the research method, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire − IPAQ in the extended version was used. Results. Boys seem to do much better and have largely fulfilled the WHO recommendation for high-intensity efforts performed 3 times for 20 minutes, and medium and high efforts − 7 times for 60 minutes, which is particularly crucial for the effectiveness of the level of physical activity. Conclusions. It is indispensable to continue monitoring the physical activity of young people using modern research techniques. It seems intentional to intensify promotion and educational activities, which should be aimed at motivating young people to undertake physical activity in accordance with worldwide recommendations.

Comparison of Selected Parameters of Physical Activity at School and at Home in Children Aged 12 in Rural Areas in Poland

Polish Journal of Sport and Tourism

Introduction. In recent years, research studies have demonstrated a significant decrease in physical activity (PA) amongst young people. Most of the young generation participate in sport and recreation too rarely, and they devote too much time to passive leisure. Diagnoses of physical activity at different stages of our lives, with particular emphasis on children and adolescents, are increasingly indicating that along with age, the level of physical activity, especially during leisure time, is decreasing. Material and methods. The aim of the study is to compare selected parameters of physical activity on a single day among students aged 12 and to determine how these parameters differ at school and at home. The study was conducted using an ActiGraph WGT3X accelerometer on a group of 100 students (50 girls and 50 boys) in a rural area of southern Poland. Results. The analysis showed that for parameters such as vigorous activity, total moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and...

School and weekend physical activity of 15-16 year-old Czech, Slovak and Polish adolescents

Acta Gymnica, 2011

BACKGROUND: When it comes to physical activity, adolescents are the group at the highest risk. When monitoring physical activity in adolescents, it is necessary to diff erentiate school and weekend days. School days are crucial in adolescents' weekly physical activity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to identify to what extent the school day and weekend physical activity levels diff er in Czech, Polish and Slovak boys and girls with diff erent cultural and education backgrounds in Central Europe. METHODS: The research was carried out in the Czech Republic in Moravia (11 schools, 383 participants), in Po land in the Katowice region (11 schools, 327 participants) and in Slovakia in the Prešov region (8 schools, 252 par ticipants). In total, 421 boys and 541 girls participated in the study. Participants wore YAMAX pedometers for seven days and recorded measured values onto a record sheet and into the internet Indares system. The results were processed using repeated ANOVA analyses and contingent charts. RESULTS: Czech, Polish, and Slovak boys and girls showed a signifi cantly higher number of steps on school days than on weekend days. No diff erence between boys and girls was found on any day of the week in any of the states. The lowest number of steps was found, both in girls and boys, on Sundays. The highest number of daily steps was measured in Czech boys (n = 14,015 steps × day-1), Polish girls (n = 12,074 steps × day-1) and Slovakian girls (n = 12,040 steps × day-1) on Fridays. CONCLUSIONS: Boys and girls in all three states were more physically active on school days than on weekend days. Wearing pedometers eliminated the diff erences between weekly physical activity in boys and girls in the Czech Republic, Poland and in Slovakia. Under Central European conditions, it was proven that wearing pedometers positively infl uences physical activity in girls.

Physical activity of children and adolescents from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia: A systematic review

Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine, 2021

Introduction and objective. Systematic monitoring of physical activity of young populations from different regions may be useful for making international comparisons, better understanding trends in physical activity and designing public health interventions to increase physical activity. Thus, the aim of the study was to comprehensively review studies examining the level of physical activity of children and adolescents from the Visegrád countries, and indicate the percentage of children and adolescents meeting the recommended level of physical activity. Materials and method. A systematic search of the published literature was conducted. Included were reports with original research that consisted of the proportion of children and adolescents who met physical activity recommendations or guidelines. To provide a current picture of physical activity of children and adolescents, the review was restricted to studies published between January 2015-November 2018. Results. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity recommendations were met by between 7.5%-69.4% of children and adolescents. Vigorous physical activity recommendations were met by between 33.6%-64.5% of children and adolescents. Daily recommendations for the number of steps taken were fulfilled by between 11.6%-69.0% of children and adolescents. Differences between age categories, genders and countries were observed. Conclusions. Public health interventions to increase physical activity are required to decrease insufficient levels of physical activity in children and adolescents, especially in girls. The review also highlights the need for studies with representative random samples that use validated measurement methods.
