Mining operations adversely affect water bodies by way of releasing toxics into local streams and filling in entire valleys. There are fears that, mining activities could cause serious metal pollution to water resources in its catchment area. This poses a threat to human use as well as the existence of aquatic organisms. The number of victims affected by mining related diseases is bound to escalate in the future if effective monitoring water resource around its catchment area is not conducted. In view of this, there is the need to have a system that would aid environmental authorities to monitor the pollution levels of these water bodies around the mining communities. This paper seeks to design a cost effective logger that could be used to monitor the degree of ionic concentration of these water bodies found around mine operation areas. The device measures and monitors the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels of these water bodies around the mining.

Mining, seen as a source of revenue in most developing countries, threatens seriously the environment. Mining impacts the water quality and one of the main problems of mining is acid mine drainage. Low pH and high concentration of heavy metals characterize acid mine drainage. When a stream is impacted by acid mine drainage both human activities and the ecological system are seriously affected. In Mozambique coal mining is growing faster since 2010 while water quality monitoring programs are not well established and improvements are limited due to lack of skilled people and financial resources. The major coal reserves of Mozambique are located in the riparian area of Zambezi River Basin which is the largest river basin in Southern Africa with 11% of its catchment area in Mozambique. The Zambezi river basin in Mozambique has a high potential for development of human activities and its environment is rich and diversified. There are water quality monitoring systems already developed and...
Desalination and Water Treatment, 2013
The present study is focused on the examination and evaluation of environmental pressures on the aquatic resources of Western Macedonia Region (Greece) and particularly in Kozani lignite mines area, and on the development of a water quality monitoring system in the region, in order to identify potential impacts to the adjacent water resources. A multi-parametric sensor system was installed in three representative sites of the target area and the corresponding measured parameters included pH, temperature, conductivity, nitrate ions (NO 3-), sulfate ions (SO 4-2), chloride ions (Cl-) for a period of about ten months. Additionally, certain other complementary physicochemical parameters (turbidity, hardness, COD, BOD 5. DO, TSS, NO 2-, NH 4 + , Fe and Al) were measured in selected grab samples, collected from certain points in the same area, in order to have an integrated view of water quality. The pH values ranged between 7.6 and 8.3 and remained quite stable in all three monitoring stations. Conductivity values ranged from 188 to 1082 μS/cm; in addition, the wide NO 3 content observed only in Ag. Dimitrios PPC Station was attributed to the discharge of partially treated wastewater effluents. A detailed analysis of recorded measurements on a day-today level, especially for SO 4-2 and Clvalues, revealed potential pollution incidents. Comparison with meteorological data of the area for the corresponding period did not show any significant correlation between measured concentrations and rainfall quantity, indicating a negligible effect of surface drainage on water quality.
An adaptable automatic trace metal monitoring system for on line measuring in natural waters
Talanta, 2011
An adaptable automatic trace metal monitoring system (ATMS) was assembled and embedded in a mobile monitoring station belonging to the French Water Agency Artois-Picardie (AEAP) and deployed in the field to measure the concentration of trace metals (electroactive and acid leachable fractions) in natural waters by anodic stripping voltammetry with a hanging mercury drop electrode. Cathodic stripping voltammetry procedures were included to estimate the concentration of dissolved oxygen and reduced sulphur species. The concept of the measuring system enables easy adaptation of methods and procedures to analytes of concern and gives the opportunity to undertake in real-time a routine analysis of the dynamic behaviour of trace metals in river, pond and seawater. The system was tested in two aquatic bodies: in a pond where eutrophication processes occur recurrently and in the Deûle River, where sediments are highly contaminated by several metals such as Pb and Zn and frequently resuspended because of the river traffic. Preliminary field studies demonstrated that trace metal concentrations can evolve quickly as a function of time, depending on the turbidity and luminescence, i.e. day-night cycles. The obtained results were compared with an Environmental Quality Standard (EQS), the Criteria Maximum Concentration (CMC) and the Criterion Continuous Concentration (CCC). The whole system is also prepared for the task of "early warning".
Battery powered cost effective TDS logger intended for water testing
Romanian Journal of Physics
The paper presents a cost-effective device designed for measuring and monitoring the TDS (total dissolved solids) level of drinkable, surface (lakes, rivers) and/or industrial waters. Providing a first reading of potential water pollutions, the device is dedicated to the sectors of environment and consumer protection. The device was implemented and a series of continuous measurements is depicted, discovering some abnormalities in the quality of Targoviste city water utility.
Getting rid of chemical analysis – Mine water management with indicator parameters
Mine water management within the 1 B Mine Pool of the Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada coal field is conducted by means of 10 wells. Depending on the infiltration rate between 1 and 10 of those pumps are in operation. Because the pump wells are drilled into different depths, the mineralisation of the pumped mine water differs with a trend to lower mineralisation in the shallower wells. In order to pump only water with low Fe-concentrations the mine water is analysed on a 6-monthly plan. Based on the analytical results the sequence in which the pumps are turned on is determined. The mine operator needed a cheaper but precise method to determine the turn-on-sequence of the pumps. A hydrogeochemical investigation of the mine water in the 10 wells at different flow rates was initiated. Based on statistical investigations, the electrical conductivity and temperature of the mine water were identified as an indicator parameter for the Fe-concentration. In combination with the flow rates of the ...
Water quality in a mining and water-stressed region
Journal of Cleaner Production
The aim of this study was to evaluate trends in water quality and mineral footprint along the catchment of a dam located in a coal mining area and water-stressed region. The study was conducted along the upper Olifants River, which is the catchment of Witbank Dam, in the jurisdiction of Emalahleni Local Municipality in South Africa. The study analysed water quality data over an eight-year period, obtained from the water authorities, and two-year data from the municipality. The analysis focused on water quality determinants such as pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids, sulphates and manganese. The analysis was conducted in line with South African National Standard 241:2015 on drinking water. By using allowable mineral concentration limits and thresholds, a statistical process capability index was calculated to determine the efficiency of controls on the potential of water being contaminated by land use and mining activities. It was found that the coal mining region was associated with adverse effects on the raw water quality. The paper presents a generic method in terms of a concentration-independent process capability index for monitoring deterioration of water across many water quality determinants. The results provide a warning signal to stakeholders. There is a time-critical and growing deterioration of water quality, which may pose health risks to consumers if there is no reduction in contamination sources or improved efficacy of water purification systems.
Surface and groundwater resources are important assets for the economic and so-cial welfare of the population of a given area; they are renewable and with proper management, they contribute substantially to sustained development. Unfortunately, the expansion of industrial and agricultural activities lead to increasing withdrawal of wa-ter from the aquifers, excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers and (frequently illicit) disposal of industrial waste. This results in rapid reduction in the quantity and quality of water reserves. There's a compelling call for the development of advanced and inex-pensive means to monitor the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of water re-sources. This paper introduces a multi-channel system, developed in response to the re-quirements specified by Directive 2000/60 of the European Commission, to measure up to 15 physical and chemical parameters (pollutant concentration) facilitating the evalu-ation of water quality in real time. The sy...
Monitoring Of Water Pollution And Its Consequences: An Overview
2014
Water a vital component for all living forms is derived from variety of sources, including surface water (rivers, lakes, reservoirs and ponds) and ground water (aquifers). Over the years of time, water bodies are subjected to human interference regularly resulting in deterioration of water quality. Therefore, pollution of water bodies has become matter of global concern. As the water quality closely relate to human health, water analysis before usage is of immense importance. Improper management of water bodies can cause serious problems in availability and quality of water. The quality of water may be described according to their physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics. For effective maintenance of water quality through appropriate control measures, continuous monitoring of metals, physico-chemical and biological parameter is essential for the establishment of baseline data for the water quality in any study area. The present study has focused on to explore the status ...
