Understanding how people think about their daily spending

2018

ISER commissioned Kantar Public to conduct 20 in-depth face-to-face qualitative interviews to explore how people think about their personal finances, with a view to understand how to design a mobile app to minimise the burden on participants recalling their daily spending, as part of the using a mobile app of Understanding Society: the UK Household Longitudinal Study. The research asked participants to recall recent spending both spontaneously and using three pre-defined models. As well as contributing to the understanding of how people conceptualise spending, the qualitative research also provides recommendations for improving the way that this information can be elicited from participants using an app.

PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT APPS (PFPMA)

IAEME PUBLICATION, 2020

This paper discusses and highlights financial problems faced by everyone in the world. Factors such as spending behaviour and financial literacy are discussed in detail in this paper, along with current efforts to combat financial illiteracy. From this, a solution is proposed in the form of a mobile application, which can help users of all age range to budget, spend smart, and take advantage of discounts and promotions. To further justify the need of this solution, the author performed an online survey, in which participants pointed towards in favour of the proposed solution. This solution will be created in hopes of increasing the financial management capabilities of many individuals.

Fin-Vest: Personal Finance Management

IRJET, 2022

Managing money along with saving and investing is termed as personal finance. The financial plan details how to accomplish monetary goals whereas the budget helps to manage one's needs, wants, and investments. It includes reducing unnecessary expenses, increasing one's investments and planning for the future, etc. Information Technology has changed the world of management of income and finances by providing solutions to these vital problems of an individual by decreasing their expenses if it crosses its limits and providing suggestions which can help one to manage one's finances. In this project, we have built a personal finance management software using various python libraries. This software can be used by anyone who wants to track their expenses, income, and financial goals.

Understanding Household Consumption Practices and their Motivations: Opportunities to Foster Sustainability Practices

Proceedings of the 6th ACM SIGCAS/SIGCHI Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies

Understanding household practices, beliefs, relationships among the members, and their preferences are often overlooked in the design of home-based interventions aiming to reduce consumption. We conducted a survey in the United Kingdom (22 responses) and a follow-up interview with 13 households to inform the design of interventions for reducing household consumption by: 1) understanding household consumption practices, and 2) identifying the concerns and challenges for household engagement with sustainability practices. Our findings highlight how the perspectives, understanding, and motives for consumption reduction actively shape household practices and their attempts to curtail consumption. Existing non-negotiable practices led to additional household consumption and we found different strategies households use to reach a shared-decision on food and energy use. Based on our findings, we provide opportunities for motivating and fostering engagement with sustainable practices at home. Elements of consumption: an abstract visualization of household consumption

Smart Graphics, 2011

To promote sustainability consumers must be informed about their consumption behaviours. Ambient displays can be used as an ecofeedback technology to convey household consumption information. Elements of Consumption (EoC) demonstrates this by visualizing electricity, water, and natural gas consumption. EoC delivers three key components:

Human Money Interaction: Designing For Personal Finances In The Developing Countries

This thesis is presented as a thesis by publication, where the peer-reviewed publications are directly used as chapters in comprising the greater part of the thesis. The introduction of the thesis provides details of the publications along with a summary of how each paper contributes to the thesis regarding the specific aims and objectives achieved by them. A comprehensive introduction (i.e., preamble) of each paper is provided at the start of each chapter (chapters 3-7). Since peer-reviewed publications are used as chapters, the references for each chapter can be found at the end of each chapter while the rest of the references (for Introduction, literature review and Reflections sections) can be found at the end of this thesis.

Ethical Consumption? There's an app for that: Exploring the role of crowd sourced mobile technologies on everyday consumption practices

It has been suggested that the advent of new mobile phone application technologies that consumers can consult while shopping, and advances in web platforms towards user-generated information, may help to close the attitude-behaviour gap cited in ethical consumption research. This thesis explores this potential through a case study of the Buycott app and evaluates Buycott’s potential to act as a source of information for consumers and to influence change in consumer behaviour. The research employed a combination of methods including content analysis, surveys, focus groups, journals and one key informant interview. Participants were found to interact with and interpret the app’s information in complex ways, often resulting in a distrust of user-generated information, and made constant negotiations between the recommendations of the app and other factors. This study concludes that the complex interaction of technologies and everyday consumption practices requires further exploration and provides recommendations on the future directions of consumer apps.

Pay by cash? Quickly design-inspired studies to gain insights about people financial transactions

Proceedings of the 7th Information Design International Conference, 2015

financial interaction; digital money, mobile payments, design methods In this work we aim to investigate the way people behave and think about transactions in everyday life. In industrial lab research, it is not always possible to conduct full-scale ethnographic studies to understand people's everyday practices in support of the development of new technologies or to understand the ways in which technology may improve people's life. We apply a less-time consuming design approach to gather preliminary ideas in preparation for more in-depth field studies. We describe four design-inspired studies to gain insights about user thoughts and behaviors while engaged in financial transactions. We also provide important design considerations for developing mobile payment systems using social networks.
