Adolescence (10-19 years) is a vulnerable period of life as many physical, psychological and cognitive development takes place in the body and mind and if the nutritional needs are not met at that time of growth it may lead to many chronic degenerative diseases later in life.. Food habits developed during this time are important for both the present and as well as their future health. If unhealthy dietary patterns are developed during this time it may lead to many serious disease later in life. For proper physical and psychological development and prevention of nutritional deficiency healthy eating habits are important during adolescent. Dietary Pattern, Food Habits and Preferences Among Adolescent and Adult Student Girls from an Urban Area, South India

The prevalence of obesity and underweight has increased in recent years due to changes in eating habits all over the world. On the other hand eating behavior and dietary factors are as a risk factor in several important diseases such as cancer, coronary heart diseases or obesity. Therefore, we assessed the food habits of adolescents and adults girls in Mysore urban area and exploring any relationships between SES, age groups and food preference and behavior. A cross-sectional study conducted on 1000 healthy young female students aged 11-28 years. A self administered questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographic indicators, food habits and preferences. Body weight and height was measured and BMI computed. Background: Adolescence is a time of rapid transition and complex experiences with society, defining the capacity of a person to reach adult life. Diet plays a crucial role in overall development of the child precisely female child as they will become the future mothers. The study objective is to assess the dietary pattern of the school adolescents in various region of the district. Food consumption patterns of adolescents aged 14-16 years in Kolkata, India

Background: The nutrition transition has brought about rapid changes in the structure of the Indian diet. The replacement of traditional home-cooked meals with ready-to-eat, processed foods has contributed to an increased risk of chronic diseases in urban Indians. Improving the nutrition of Indians by promoting healthy food consumption in early life and in adolescence would help to reduce these health risks. However, little is known about the quality and quantity of foods and beverages consumed by urban Indian adolescents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the food consumption patterns in a sample of urban Indian adolescents.

DIETARY PATTERN OF COLLEGE GOING ADOLESCENTS ( 17-19 YEARS) IN URBAN AREA OF BELAGAVI

Introduction: In India, poor eating habits are a major public health concern among college students who experience transition into university life, during which they are exposed to stress and lack of time. Objective: To assess the dietary pattern among college going adolescents. Methodology: Cross-sectional study conducted among 400 college going adolescents (17-19 years ) residing in urban area of Belagavi. Diet ( consumption pattern ), frequency of meals, type of meal, vegetables and fruits consumption, daily water intake, consumption of fast food, etc. were assessed using pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Results: Mean calorie consumption among boys was 1472 ±417 Kcal and in girls was 1360 ± 380 Kcal. 45.5% of boys and 51.5% of girls were underweight. Majority had regular meals and breakfast (72% &, 80.8% respectively ). 46.8% consumed fruits less than three times per week, 58% had fried food twice or more per week and 40.5% consumed less than 2 liters of water a day. Conclusions: Most of the students in this study had healthy eating habits except in their consumption of fruits, water intake and consumption of fried food. A study of this type will help to provide nutrition education on healthy food habits and life styles which will help college students bridge the gap between knowledge and practice of dietary pattern.

Eating Habits of Adolescent Students

Background: To assess eating habits of adolescent students of Rawalpindi. Methods: In this descriptive study 276 students of both genders, aged between 13-16 yrs were selected through two stage cluster sampling technique. Data was collected by means of structured questionnaire. Questionnaire asked information regarding demographics and eating habits i.e. the type of the food group being consumed and the frequency of consumption of these foods, based on United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food guide pyramid. Results: Majority( 75.7%) had unhealthy eating habits, while 19.9 had satisfactory and only 4.4% had healthy eating habits. Majority of the students(40.6%) ate fruits and vegetables 2-3 times a week, while 32.6% never drank milk and 13% never ate meat. Conclusion: Majority of the adolescent students had unhealthy eating habits and did not take the food groups as recommended by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food guide pyramid (FGP).

Assessment of dietary pattern of school going adolescents in a metro city: a cross sectional study

Children are often considered as a wealth of a country since they are the future leaders and decision-makers of any country. However, there is considerable ambiguity in the definition of young people and terms like young, adolescents, adults, young adults which are often used interchangeably. World Health Organization (WHO) defines "adolescence" as age spanning 10 to 19 yrs, Adolescence is further divided into early adolescence (11-14 yrs), middle adolescence (15-17 yrs), and late adolescence (18-21 yrs). 1 Childhood is considered as one of the most vulnerable age group, since, in a developing country like India due to poverty and a particular sociocultural pattern a substantial number of school children from paediatric age to adolescents suffer from various diseases which can be early diagnosed, treated and prevented. Childhood age is a crucial period for physical, mental and social development. 2,3 Schools are sacred because they provide an environment for learning skills, and for development of intelligence that can be utilized by students to achieve their goals in life. Epidemiological evidences suggest a strong link between maternal and early childhood undernutrition and increased adult risk of various chronic diseases. The present study aims at assessment of assessment of dietary pattern of school going adolescents. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted among 440 school going children of class 9th,10th,11th,12th in a Government School at Kolkata, over a period of 6 months. The study participants were interviewed and their responses regarding their dietary patterns, habits, and knowledge about healthy dietary practices were noted down using pre-validated case record proforma. Their anthropometric records were also noted. Statistical analysis used: All the data was entered using Microsoft Excel software and analyzed using appropriate statistical tests with the help of SPSS statistical software. Results: Majority of children (50%) belonged to age group of 15-16yrs. The present study finds 48% prevalence of overnutrition and 12% undernutrition in school children. Conclusions: Developing countries like India shows the double burden of nutritional disorders, undernutrition as well as overnutrition due to limited availability of resources on one hand and western food habits, junk/fast food habits on the other hand respectively.

Descriptive Study on Dietary Pattern and Health Status of Adolescents from Rural Bengaluru

Background: Changing lifestyle and food consumption patterns have greater impact on the health status of adolescents including rural, urban and peri-urban areas. Adolescents are vulnerable age group and needs special attention to meet the daily recommended nutrient intakes, especially as it lays foundation for the adult life. Thus, this study was planned to document the sociodemographic and food consumption pattern of adolescents residing in rural Bengaluru. Methods: A semi-structured questionnaire was designed based on pilot-study to collect data on the anthropometric profile, socioeconomic status and food consumption pattern. The data was calculated for the per cent adequacy for nutrients and food intake. Result: The data suggested that majority (80%) respondents belonged to lower middle class and only 12-16% were from upper lower class. Sixty-eight per cent respondents had normal BMI while still 29 per cent were underweight. Skipping meals was noted more in adolescent girls than boys. The per cent nutrient adequacy was more for macronutrients, while less for micronutrients; however, the calcium adequacy was higher due to regular finger millet consumption.

Food habits among adolescent girls: A qualitative study in urban and peri-urban communities, Delhi, India

There are approximately 253 million adolescents in India, and their nutritional needs are high. Consumption of fast food, high in saturated fat, salt, and sugar, is high among adolescents. Considering the lack of information on the knowledge and practices related to eating patterns among adolescents in India, this paper reports the practice, perception, and knowledge about healthy and unhealthy eating habits of this segment of its population in urban and peri-urban communities. Qualitative data were collected during the formative stage of an intervention study.
