On the buckling of steel members under axial compression (original) (raw)
2016, Current Opinion in Anesthesiology
The design of steel columns recommended by Brazilian standard NBR 8800:1986 was based on Eurocode 3 curves. The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 8800:2008, however, was based on the North American specification AISC. The North American and European curves although lead to similar results, their equations are very different. In this paper, detailed and didactic introduction on the behavior of columns is presented. Topics related to the classic buckling theory (bifurcation point), the effects of the geometric imperfections and of the material behavior are included. A simplified but interesting study of the stability of systems of rigid bars connected by springs based on the minimization of the total potential energy is presented. The buckling curve for elastic materials is derived and comparisons between several curves are presented.
