A Geographical Analysis of the Handloom Weavers of Jangipara Gram Panchayat, Hooghly District, West Bengal

The primary goal of this study is to conduct a contextual analysis of handloom workers by focusing on the concerns of handloom weavers in the Jangipara Gram Panchayat in West Bengal's Hooghly region. It does a SWOT analysis of the handloom industry, examining the sector's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The number of weaver households decreased gradually in the study area. A convenience sample of 120 households from Jangipara Gram Panchayat (GP) was selected using the convenience sampling approach. The bulk of responders (46.67 percent) is between the ages of 26 and 35, followed by 36 and 55. (19.17 percent). In terms of educational qualifications, 85 percent of weavers have completed elementary school, while the remaining 15% are illiterates. It's also been deduced that 9% of the respondents make more than Rs.5000 per month, while 35% earn between Rs.2001-3000 per month. According to the findings, the majority of clients were female, and there is a greater opportunity to recruit male customers. Despite being located in a tiny space, the handloom business in Jangipara Gram Panchayat has the opportunity to access a bigger market. There is lots of geographical factors that will facilitate the development of the handloom industry. The research may be expanded to learn more about consumer purchase habits for handloom products, as well as customer satisfaction with handloom products, using spatial analysis and other geographical aspects.

Opportunities and Challenges for the Handloom Industry: With Special Reference to Weavers of Madhya Pradesh

India traditionally being an agrarian economy has strong dominance of agriculture and allied activities since post-independence days. Handlooms has not only being a crucial sector for economic development but always displayed the rich socio cultural diversity of India. Handloom industry the second largest employment generator in rural India after agricultural, is contributing significantly in Exports too. However, it is going through tough times in the recent past due to internationalization and globalization, when the modern power looms started dominating the traditional industry. As per the Third handloom Census, the industry that generates 77% employment for women has observed an overall decline in the employable weavers from 65.5 lakhs (in 1995-96) to 43 lakhs (2009-10). With the continuous efforts of government to revive the sector through skill development programs and financing activities to increase the productivity and marketing the sector is lagging behind. The study focuses on identifying the challenges and weakness of the sector to suggest a prescriptive solution. To accomplish the objective we have narrowed down by emphasizing on world famous Maheshwari and Chanderi handlooms of Madhya Pradesh, to assess the state of weavers and structural issues. Thus, it relies on both primary and secondary data to suggest remedial measures in a globally competitive market.

Socio-Economic Assessment and Marketing Constraints of the Handloom Units-a Case Study of Bishnupur Municipal Town, Bankura District (West Bengal)

Handlooms are synonymous with Indian traditions. They occupy a significant part of the economy and are a vital employment provider in millions of rural households. Handlooms are a distinguished non-farm sector in our country. Bishnupur municipal town in Bankura district of West Bengal is a cradle of handloom weavers, who create magic with silk threads and produce the unique Baluchari and Swarnachuri saris which portray our rich heritage. There are around 1220 looms producing handlooms worth Rs 16 million annually in Bishnupur municipal town. More than 15% of the total workforce in the area is engaged in Handloom production. SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF HANDLOOM WEAVING SOCIETIES -A CASE STUDY OF WARANGAL DISTRICT

Traditional Indian handloom enjoys a global reputation as well as huge demands in the local markets. However, the weavers face a number of challenges which affect their livelihood and overall wellbeing. Weaving practiced in India has been in existence for more than 5000 years. It is also found in Ramayana and Mahabharata that speak about length of craft. India has a rich cultural heritage of Handloom Industry having the largest Handloom Industry in the world. Thus it also makes major contribution to the economy. The study aims to analyse the socio economic condition of the weavers and offer possible recommendations to mitigate their plight. This study is based on primary data collected through interview schedules 57 active societies in Warangal district of Telangana State. The result of the study revealed that the weavers are facing a number of challenges like financial constraint, inability to purchase up-to-date machineries, poor working condition, meagre remuneration and the absence of government support.

A Comparative Study upon The Socio -Economic condition of the workers in Handloom Industry with spatial reference to Uttar Pradesh

Handloom weaving is one of the richest and most vibrant aspects of Indian cultural heritage, and the largest unorganized economic activity and generator of non-agricultural rural employment in India. Uttar Pradesh ranks third in the country in terms of production and employment in the handloom sector and about 5.42 percent of the total numbers of handloom workers in the country are residents of Uttar Pradesh (according to the 4th census). According to the 4th All India Handloom Census 2019-20, it is estimated that the handloom industry employs approximately 1.91 lakhs workforce directly and approximately 1.24 lakhs looms spread all over Uttar Pradesh. The handloom workers include both handloom weavers and allied workers. The total number of handloom workers is more than 1.91 lakhs, with which the number of weavers is more than 1.31 lakhs approx., and allied workers related to handloom are more than 60.18 thousand in Uttar Pradesh. The export of Handloom products during 2019-20 was 2248.33 corer and during the year 2020-21 was Rs.1644.78 corer. In this research paper, a comparative study of the socio-economic status of the workers employed in the handloom industry in Uttar Pradesh has done. This comparative study was done on the basis of the data obtained from the third and fourth handloom census, in which it was found that the socio-economic condition of the handloom workers have improved in the fourth census as compared to the third handloom census, but even at the present time it is not above the level of livelihood. A significant share of weaver households earn less than 5000 per month and relatively low returns from the sector is perhaps the key determinant behind the fall in average number of worker per households between the two censuses, from 5.31 in the Third census to 2.77 in the Fourth census. Got up Various schemes have been run by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to improve the socio-economic condition of handloom workers, but most of the workers are not aware of these schemes, due to which they have been deprived of the benefits of these schemes. This study is focus on the changes in the socio-economic conditions of workers between two handloom censuses.

Protection and Promotion of Traditional Crafts and Occupations in Globalising India: A case study of weavers of Mau (Uttar Pradesh

India is a combination of multiple worlds. At a time it lives in many centuries and cultures. The world of India " s crafts persons spans millennia and spreads across the length and breadth of our rich land, which is apparently observed in cities, towns and in beautiful villages. India opened her market to the multinationals during the era of economic reforms, bringing an end to the license raj. Now world boundaries are eroding paving way to economic investment across the world, in which developed nation are penetrating and leading in underdeveloped market of third world. If we talk about Indian Artisans and their products handicrafts which are integral part of our society are in demand in Western consumers (Jena, 2010b). The cultural borders are eroding out and becoming irrelevant. The major concern in the Indian Handicrafts industry is that whether they can stand in front giant industrial products. Opening of Indian market had paved the way to foreign firms to produce daily needs and products for festivals, which are earlier produced by village artisans. This poses a big question for the survival of village artisans who are technically and financially poor. This paper observes the impact of liberalisation on community of weavers in district Mau and the opportunity they may have. Further, this paper will also discuss the governmental policyand programme for the promotion of traditional crafts.

Socio-Economic Conditions of Handloom Weavers: A Study in Karimnagar District of Telangana

The handloom weaving is one of the oldest arts, as history of human civilization and has a long tradition of excellence. In this paper mainly evaluate the structure of Karimnagar district handloom sector, socio-economic conditions of the handloom weavers in the district and finally to assess income and expenditure levels of the handloom weavers in Karimnagar district of Telangana. Telangana is one of the important states in the handloom industry. There are about 82,435 handloom weavers in cooperative fold and 1,58,902 in outside cooperative fold. In the Karimnagar district the total handloom weavers was registered 6,260 weavers. In the district the total handloom weaver’s cooperative societies working has registered 35. It is evident from the study that majority 54 per cent of the weavers are earning below Rs.50,000 per annum, only 41.50 per cent of the respondents are earning between Rs.50,000-1 lakh. Growth and Prospects of the Handloom Industry

The handloom sector occupies a distinct and unique place in the Indian economy, besides being the largest generator of non-farm rural employment. While available statistics indicate an economic sector of considerable size, there is still immense scope for expansion. The handloom sector in indeed capable of exponential growth, with proper identification of its needs, a reasonable level of resource input and structural attention.

Conventional Indian handloom enjoys a global reputation as well as national prestige in terms nature and quality of product and its rich demand both in India as well as abroad. However, the weavers undergo enormous challenges related to their occupational survival in the post modernity era wherethe biggest challenge is problem of large production in this social cum capitalist world. The study aims to analyse the socioeconomic conditions of the weavers and offer possible recommendations to mitigate their plight. This study is based on primary data collected through interview schedules schedules from a random set of seventy weavers residing in ChiralaMandal of Andhra Pradesh. The result of the study reveals the major problems which have been engaging by the weavers both at economical and non-economicalcausational ground. The results of the study also detail their expenditure on merit and demerit goods and services such as education, health, food, and non-food items, liquor consumption smoking, etc during the study period.

IRJET-THE ROLE AND WORKING OF HANDLOOM SECTOR IN CHHATTISGARH

Handloom industry plays an important role in the development of the rural economical scenario of Chhattisgarh. It is one of the largest economic activities providing direct employment to larger number of persons engaged in weaving activities. The study is descriptive in nature in which method of observation and survey has been adopted. The study is conducted to know the concentration of handloom industries in Northern, Southern and Central Regions of Chhattisgarh with reference to the number of weaving co-operative societies operated, number of active looms used and number of weavers employed. The study focused on the most and least handloom production units of Chhattisgarh. The study finds that Central Region of Chhattisgarh consists of maximum hand-loom units. The study also explores that the increase in number of weaving co-operatives and active looms results in increased number of weavers which, later on increase in production of handloom products. Finally, it reveals that among all districts, Janjgir- Champa acquires maximum handloom production and their kosa/Tussar fabrics have made a mark in the domestic as well as the international market.
