Chromatographic techniques in the analysis of organochlorine pesticide residues

Journal of Chromatography A, 1996

The review briefly covers the chromatographic techniques used in the analysis of organochlorine pesticide residues. The organochlorines ranging from DDT, HCH, the cyclodiene group and the polychloroterpene group have been covered. It endeavours to examine the existing methodologies and techniques including residue extraction, clean-up, chromatographic procedures involved in clean-up and determination and quantification of organochlorine residues by gas liquid chromatography from different substrates like food commodities, crops, soil and water.

Monitoring of Organochlorine Pesticide Residue Levels in Adipose Tissue of Veracruz, Mexico Inhabitants

Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2011

A study was conducted to determine the organochlorine pesticides (aldrin, Para para-DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor and lindane) residues in surface water samples of the agricultural field of Bangladesh. Water samples were collected from different regions of Bangladesh using the administrative infrastructure of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) during 2005-2006. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques were used to determine the organochlorine pesticides residues in water samples. Results indicates slight contamination of some water samples of irrigated agricultural field samples with P, P-DT, heptachlor and lindane, while majority of the samples were found to be free from contamination. Aldrin, dieldrin and endrin were not found in any sample studied agricultural field.

Methods for the determination of organochlorine pesticide residues in human serum

Journal of Chromatography B: Biomedical Sciences and Applications, 1998

The effectiveness of solid-phase extraction with Florisil for the determination of 12 organochlorine pesticide residues from human serum was examined. Recoveries greater than 84% and coefficients of variation better than 19% were obtained. Others methods, such as column partition and matrix solid-phase dispersion, were compared. The better method provides quantification limits ranging from 1.08 μg/l for γ-HCH and 37.5 μg/l for p,p′-DDT when capillary gas–liquid chromatography with electron-capture detection is used for the final determination.

Determination of Organochlorine Pesticides Residues in Human Adipose Tissue, Data from Cukurova, Turkey

Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2010

We determined and compared the levels of BHC and DDT isomers and metabolites and HCB in the adipose tissue of 82 cases of autopsies performed at the Morgue Department of Adana Branch of the Council of Forensic Medicine. The relationships between the age, gender, and body mass indexes of cases, and the accumulation of OCs residues were also investigated. Detectable concentrations of p,p′-DDE were found in 100% of adipose tissue samples. Concentrations of OCs in female adipose tissues were significantly higher than male adipose tissues (p < 0.05). The presented work is highly significant, being the first study pointing out the chronic exposure to organochlorine pesticides in Cukurova region.

Identification and quantification of polychlorinated biphenyls and some endocrine disrupting pesticides in human adipose tissue from Finland

Chemosphere, 2001

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analysed in extracts of human adipose tissue. The samples consisted of abdominal, mammary, and perirenal fat tissue of 27 Finnish adult males and females. Lipids were separated from the low-molecular compounds by preparative gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and the extracts were further cleaned-up using Florisil chromatography. The compounds were analysed in the extracts by gas chromatography (GC) using electron capture detection and by GC-mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode. Of the 23 analysed pesticide residues only seven could be detected in the extracts. All the extracts contained the DDT metabolite 4; 4 H -DDE, hexachlorobenzene, and PCBs. Other compounds found in the extracts were 4; 4 H -DDT, 4; 4 H -DDD, pentachlorobenzene, and b-and c-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). The antiandrogenic 4; 4 H -DDE was the most abundant pesticide with concentration levels ranging from 3.5 to 3229 ng/g lipids (ppb). The mean concentration of DDE was 567 ppb, of pesticides in all 1008 ppb and of PCBs 504 ppb. Several of the identi®ed compounds have been shown to exhibit endocrine disrupting eects. Statistical analysis showed a positive age correlation of DDE in females and hexachlorobenzene in males. No statistically signi®cant dierences were found for concentrations of individual compounds between sexes. Ó

Organochlorine pesticides residues in butter, olive oils and corn oils

Saadia H. El- shinawya, Arafa M. Solimana, Fayza A. Sdeekb, Hazem M. Moustafac , 2017

Dietary fat and oil is important for many body processes. The present investigation was carried out to determine the concentrations of organochlorine pesticides in butter, olive and corn oil. A total of 125 samples (75 butter, 25 each of olive oil and corn oil) were collected from El Minia Governorate, Egypt. Levels of these compounds were determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The results indicated that 30.4%(38/125), 24.8%(31/125), 21.6%(27/125), 21.6%(27/125), 16.8%(21/125), 14.4%(18/125), 14.4%(18/125), 12.8%(16/125), 9.6%(12/125), 8.8%(11/125), 8%(10/125), 1.6%(2/125) and 0.8%(1/125) of the examined samples were contaminated with Heptachlor, Endrin, Aldrin, Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene(p,p'-DDE), Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane(p,p'-DDD), Gamma hexachlorocyclohexane(Gamma HCH), Heptachlor epoxide, Dieldrin, Endosulfan, methoxychlor, Alpha hexachlorocyclohexane(Alpha HCH), Delta hexachlorocyclohexane(Delta HCH) and Gamma Chlordane, respectively. None of the examined samples revealed the presence of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) and 11 samples contained organochlorine residues above European Union maximum residue limits (EU MRL)..
