Sleep and Hypnosis - International Journal

Background and aim: Sleep disorders are not innately harmful to quality of life, they can induce or complicate physical and mental sicknesses and increase the risk of mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the association of sleep quality components with socio-demographic characteristics in elderly people in Qazvin, Iran. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 400 elderly patients referred to health centers in Qazvin. Data were collected by using a demographic questionnaire and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). Data were analyzed by SPSS 19 software, descriptive and inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney, Chi-square, logistic regression). Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 80%. Statistically significant difference were observed between total global PSQI score and economic condition (p<0.03) and had chronic physical disease (P<0.001). Highest component scores was sleep latency (1.55±1.06) and lowest was habitual sleep efficiency (0.16±0.57). Older women had worse sleep quality compared with older men (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression model indicated that female sex is associated with greater tendency towards poor sleep quality (OR=1.78, 95% CI=1.08-2.94, P=0.022). Conclusion: This study provides evidences that poor sleep quality was high among the elderly of Qazvin. It seems sleep quality assessment of older adults is necessary to identify the factors affecting sleep quality and to adopt appropriate measures and strategies to eliminate or reduce the effect of these factors.

Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine

Aim:The aim of the present study is to evaluate sleep quality in the elderly living in Kırşehir city center and to identify related factors. Material and Method: Subjects of this descriptive study included elderly individuals registered in family health centers in Kırşehir city center. The sample included 700 elderly individuals selected using stratified sampling method. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews conducted on December 3%u201331, 2016, using a questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and UCLA Loneliness Scale. Ethics committee approval and informed consent of patients were obtained. Numbers, percentages and mean values, as well as logistic regression (enter method) were used in statistical analysis. Results:The mean sleep quality score was 7.63 ± 3.23, and 70.4% of them had poor sleep quality. According to the logistic regression analysis, risk factors that had a negative effect on sleep quality were female sex, low educational level, being single/divorced, having no children, negative perception of economic status, presence of a chronic disease, regular medication use, daytime sleepiness, and feelings of loneliness. Discussion: According to the findings of the study, elderly individuals had poor sleep quality, and several factors such as demographic and socioeconomic factors had a negative effect on sleep quality. According to the results of the present study, we suggest conducting community-based studies to evaluate risk factors that have a negative effect on sleep quality in elderly individuals, while considering psychological and social care, support, and care and management of chronic illnesses.

Sleep complaints among elderly persons: an epidemiologic study of three communities

Sleep, 1995

The frequencies of five common sleep complaints--trouble falling asleep, waking up, awaking too early, needing to nap and not feeling rested--were assessed in over 9,000 participants aged 65 years and older in the National Institute on Aging's multicentered study entitled "Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly" (EPESE). Less than 20% of the participants in each community rarely or never had any complaints, whereas over half reported at least one of these complaints as occurring most of the time. Between 23% and 34% had symptoms of insomnia, and between 7% and 15% percent rarely or never felt rested after waking up in the morning. In multivariate analyses, sleep complaints were associated with an increasing number of respiratory symptoms, physical disabilities, nonprescription medications, depressive symptoms and poorer self-perceived health. Sleep disturbances, particularly among older persons, oftentimes may be secondary to coexisting diseas...

Sleep Disturbances in Elderly: A Subjective Evaluation Over 65

Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, 2004

Sleep in elderly people shows progressive changes caused by general aging processes. Several alterations are described in medical literature: changes of sleep/wake rhythm and modifications both in sleep duration and in sleep architecture. The aim of our study was to evaluate sleep disturbances in elderly people, with and without cognitive impairment, through a sleep questionnaire. Our population included 1000 subjects, over 65 years of age, stratified by sex and age. The first 600 interviews were included in this report. All patients underwent a mini mental state examination (MMSE) and a questionnaire concerning excessive daytime sleepiness. In our total sample, we found a high prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, nighttime awakenings, snoring, restlessness and periodic leg movements during sleep. Patients with cognitive dysfunctions showed less difficulty in falling asleep and fewer nighttime awakenings; they snored less frequently and were the only ones to present enuresis and to fall off the bed. Moreover, patients with cognitive impairment presented excessive daytime sleepiness with variable intensity and frequency. In conclusion, our results indicate significant differences in sleep disorders between healthy subjects and patients cognitively impaired. Besides, our subjective evaluation seems to be a useful method to perform an assessment of sleep disturbances in elderly people.
