Nursing Education at the Brazilian New State Era: The Case of the Medalha Milagrosa School
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem, 2016
The aim of this study was to analyze how the creation of the Medalha Milagrosa Nursing School took place in 1945. This is a socio-historical study that uses an analytical strategy anchored in Pierre Bourdieu's thought. Primary and secondary sources were used. As a result, the central role of the New State (Estado Novo) and its historically authoritarian interpenetration in the societal and economic spheres are discussed, as well as the process through which the field of forces and struggles was constructed by the players during the movement to create this school. In the organizational and bureaucratic field, disputes between the State, the Church, and the academic environment are observed. There is evidence related to the innovation that this school meant in the fields of health and education, as well as to actions taken by the players who created it according to the patterns of modern nursing.
Nursing as a Profession in Brazil: Sociological Contributions
Journal of Nursing & Care, 2016
Aim: The objective was to analyze the content of Nursing Professional Practice Law and compare it to the content of papers addressing professional identity published in Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem. Methods: Bibliographic and documental searches were conducted using qualitative analysis grounded on Eliot Freidson's Sociology of Professions. The corpus consisted of texts published between 1983 and 2012, and Brazilian Legal Documents. Results: The thematic category "Contradictions of the nursing profession" emerged. A weakness of the professional project was identified, which is based on the fragmentation of work. This reductionist approach legitimizes the maintenance of nursing divided into professional and non-professional workers, restricting the practice of nurses. Conclusion: The complexity of care requires social responsibility to construct a professional project that provides scientific, ethical, philosophical and political foundations to workers to support their practice.
The present study seeks to analyze the historical evolution of nursing education at the Hospital Geral de Santo António in Porto, during the period from the creation of the Nursing School in 1896 to the curricular standardization of nursing education in Portugal, introduced in 1947 by Decree-Law No. 36219. Using a qualitative methodology, this historical analysis of original documentation (the reports of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto and the statutes of the Nursing School) revealed a constant scientific updating of both the medical discipline and the concept of healthcare in Portuguese hospitals. A link is also established between the development of the medical profession and that of nursing and ancillary staff as a relevant factor for achieving the aim of improving the quality of care provided. The Nursing School was therefore created, based on the provision of training in medical treatment, the application of dressings, and the concepts of sepsis and antisepsis. In 1935, the course was reformulated and, under its new statutes, theoretical and practical disciplines were given a major role. Finally, in 1947, at the initiative of the government, the nursing curriculum was standardized throughout the whole of the national territory, thereby initiating a new phase in its existence. In this way, this Nursing School embarked upon a process of professional accreditation, forming more demanding curricula and responding to the constant needs of a changing society, of which that of the twentieth century is a good example.
