Organizational Development: The Management of Change in Industrial Organizations in Nigeria
This study is centered on the management of change in industrial organizations in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of the study, two null hypotheses were stated, a sectional survey was conducted using data which were from the Nigerian Engineering works, Port Harcourt, with the aid of questionnaire and personal discussions. The response of the questionnaire services serve as the basic element of the study. The instrument for collecting the primary data consisted of 120 copies of questionnaire administered personally to the respondents, which constituted the sample size. The hypotheses were tested with the use of Chisquare (X2) formula. The findings of the research revealed that change management is a great phenomenon that enhances the performance of the industrial organizations and that if more attentions are given, industrial organizations definitely will have a good standard. We therefore recommend that the management should encourage change in the industrial organizations and that industrial organizations are better of with innovative process on products and procedures of production.
Adaptability of Firms to Change and Corporate Performance in Nigeria Society
2010
This research study was conducted to find out if there is a positive relationship between firms ' adaptability to change (effective change management) and corporate performance. Data were collected through questionnaire from thirteen banks in Nigeria. The Pearsons' productmoment correlation coefficient (r) was used for data analysis. The •results show among others, that there is a positive relationship between a wellmanaged change programme and corporate performance. Therefore, management should initiate change with the involvement of staff either from a reactive or proactive posture against environmental dynamism. This helps adapt the enti re business processes to the change in order to enhance corporate performance as failure to do this could mean the death of the organization. The turbulent business e nvironment in which most organizations operate means that not only is change becoming more complex but also that the nature of change may be increasingly complex and more extensive. Change is a continuous prpcess that can be gradual or radical. For an organization, change may be planned or unplanned, sustaining innovation or disruptive innovation, evolutionary or revolution ary and there will always be response which may be positive or negative. According to Christensen (1997), successful companies, no matter the source of their capabilities, are pretty good at responding to evolutionary changes in the markets, which is refened to as sustaining innovation. Where they run into trouble is in handling or initiating revolutionary changes' in their markets, or dealing with di sruptive change. From the foregoin g, that organization will continuously experience change is no longer the issue but rather their adaptability to such change. According to Krause (1995) adaptation means not clinging to fixed methods, but changing appropriately according to events, acting as is suitable. This is a function of management ability to manage change. Change management is such a complex yet simple discourse that looks at change from the level of self to affecting the change in the whole organization which inadvertently affects the whole wider society. According to Corner (1992) there are a multitude of concepts on change management and it is very difficult to have a general definition of it. But it could simply be defined as the process, tool and techniques to manage and make adaptable the resources that are, people, money, material and technology in a change process, to achieve the desired result and to realize the change effectively. It can also be viewed from the following perspectives: the task of managing change; an area of professional practices; and a body of knowledge. The Hallmark of any good management is excellent performance in terms of profitability or productivity through high quality products or services, customer satisfaction and employee motivation. Performance is planned taking into consideration expected changes in the environment. Most organizations introduced planned changes either in reaction to, or anticipation of changes in the external environment; they must obtain information from their environment to maintain and increase effectiveness. This is because organizations that can not or do not adapt to changes in their environment will eventually die (Ogunbameru, 2004). According to Oni (2005) experts have recognized four variables as the key elements to managing change namely, people, task (business), technology and structure. Also, Overdorf and Clayton (2000) opines that, when addressing either sustaining innovation or disruptive innovation, when an organization needs new processes and values-because it needs new capabilities-managers must create a new organizational space where those capabilities can be developed. This can b~ achieved in three possible ways: creating new capabilities internally; capabilities • through a spinmit organization, and capabilities through acquisition.
Due to the importance of the daily operations and strategic positioning of the modern business enterprise, information technology has become the backbone and ever more important part of the structure of most organizations. Therefore, the importance of Information Technology (IT) infrastructure is recognized more and more within companies and corporations. The research was made to looking into how IT infrastructural changes affect the performance of an organization, as this (infrastructure) is the foundation upon which IT services of an organization operate. The researched looked at the some of the existing standards used in change management which includes COBIT, Prince2 and ITIL. This research used a case study of Kaduna Refinery and petrochemical company to analyze the effect of IT infrastructural change and methodology adopted for this study was a quantitative approach, where 60 questionnaires were distributed and 80% responded. Some of the findings of the research were that IT infrastructural change was on using normal change procedure in the organization which sometimes results in poor service provision and misuse of resources. IT staffs are sometimes not involved in the change process and can result in poor staff performance. Since infrastructure is vital in IT service provision and organization processes depends on it, it is therefore important to have standard procedure for such change so as to reduce risk and cost involved in such change. It is recommended that IT staffs and stakeholders should be fully involve it IT changes and staff training on change management process should be done on regular bases. In conclusion IT infrastructural change should be carefully analysed by IT staff and stakeholders so as to reduce the risk involved in such change. Organizations should adopt used of best practise procedures for change processes and also provide staff training

The examination assessed the connection between information technology infrastructure and organisational sustainability (with environmental sustainability and economic sustainability as proxies) of petroleum tank farms in South-South, Nigeria. The theory of technology-organisation-environment framework was the underlying theory and the underpinning philosophy is positivism. A cross-sectional survey approach was used, and questionnaire was used to collect primary data. The Krejcie & Morgan’s formula was used to determine a sample size of 262, from a population of 820 key managers. The sample size was adjusted by 10% to 288 respondents, to provide for non-responses and outliers. The hypotheses were tested using the structural equation model, at 0.05 level of significance. The analyses showed that information technology infrastructure has positive significant relationship with the proxies of organisational sustainability. The investigation concludes that information technology infrastr...

This study focuses on the practice of change management and operational resilience among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. The research adopts an empirical approach, relying on secondary data sourced from the 2014 enterprise survey of the World Bank and applied the logit regression analysis. Results showed that product development and experience are statistically significant and positively related to capacity utilisation. While political instability, spoilage (loss of product in transit, due to theft, breakage or spoilage) and financial constraint are negatively related to capacity utilisation. This implies that the increased level of product development is capable of increasing capacity utilisation by approximately 0.4, 0.5 and 0.7 units, respectively. In the same way, the manager's experience increase capacity utilisation by 0.44units, which conforms to the ‘a priori’ expectation, for managers to be resilient, the experience is highly required. Similarly, the res...
Contingency research in operations management practices
Journal of Operations Management, 2008
As operations management (OM) best practices have become mature, research on practices has begun to shift its interest from the justification of the value of those practices to the understanding of the contextual conditions under which they are effective-OM practice contingency research (OM PCR). This article sets out to examine and critique the current state of OM PCR. We review OM PCR studies through the lens of the major theoretical view on contingencies, contingency theory, along a number of relevant dimensions: contingency variables, performance variables, measurement, research design and employed form of fit. In this process, we put forward a number of tasks that need to be accomplished in order to move OM PCR forward and develop more solid conceptual foundations in which to anchor rigorous research in this area. Finally, we reflect on the theoretical arguments that underlie OM PCR (which are based on the contingency approach) and identify its limitations in fully explaining the currently observed patterns of use of OM practices and associated performance outcomes. As a result, we propose that in order to increase our understanding of these patterns, OM scholars need to study in more depth the process of selection of OM best practices by organizations. Accordingly, we put forward a framework to underpin such research integrating contingency theory and other theoretical perspectives.
