The concept of Ecosystem Services (ES), namely the benefits that people obtain from ecosystems, clearly highlights the added value that environment and landscape conservation provides for the society and the economy and, more generally, for human well-being. In the last decade, several studies dealt with the needs and ways of integrating ES evaluation into spatial planning policies to foster sustainable development. More recently, the relationship between ES evaluation and landscape design has been increasingly investigated too, and ES have been proposed as a conceptual framework for addressing landscape architecture towards multifunctionality objectives. This chapter presents the first outcomes of an applied research that assumed ES evaluation—understood both as biophysical assessment and economic valuation—as a tool to sustain landscape design choices at the local scale. The study evaluated ES in a rural peri-urban area of Chieri (Turin, Italy), to support the project of a rural-r...
Identification and evaluation of ecosystem services for a regional park: a case study in Italy
This paper analyses the ecosystem services provided by a regional park in the South of Italy. The park, constituted by 12 municipalities, aims at facilitating a smart management of cultural-historic and environmental heritage as well as the optimization in the use of local resources and peculiarities. The ecosystem services actually provided by the park (e.g. CO2 sequestration) or potentially usable (e.g. the production of olive-oil) have been identified. The aim is to highlight the essential importance of the natural capital stock and the services it provides for the local economy and for those who can take benefit from them. Neglecting the ecosystem services’ value in decision making processes entails the loss of several assets – in some cases un-replaceable, such as local biodiversity – which may imply serious consequences for the overall ecosystem and the sustainability of the local economic system.

The new frontiers of sustainable cities should focus on urban planning tools and strategies that are able to integrate ecosystem services in urban development. An important step could include the design of nature-based solutions (NbSs) for introducing important ecological functions aiding human well-being and mitigating the loss of soil. In this study, we propose a methodology to analyse, in a spatial way, the effect of land use scenarios generated by urban planning in the provision of ecosystem services. The methodology analyses the variation of ecosystem services, considering the ecosystem services of the study area and their potential roles in changing the functions of planned urban actions as the starting point. One scenario of analysis includes the integration of NbSs into urban planning. The case study is that of a peri-urban area, characterized by an agroecosystem, which is intended for urban development in the municipality of Gallipoli, Southern Italy. The analysis highlight...
Green infrastructure (GI) has been an object of different theoretical-practical approaches concerning its application as a tool to build a sustainable and resilient land use plan. The key would be to guarantee the cities' functions and services to work with nature. The challenge requests a clear association between conceptual terms and the design practices that have been developed in recent years, attending urban functions and protecting ecosystem services. The present work contributes to the debate, establishing the relationship between principles, urban scales, urban functions and configurable components of green infrastructure with the potential to guarantee the ecosystem service and to respond to the demands of the city's functioning. The research approach is related to the ecosystem service associated with the water cycle in cities. The method is based on the organization of conceptual review bases and some research results on green infrastructure, landscape architecture and urbanism, to build a framework of analysis that can be validated in an empirical study that will subsidize plans of urban spatial planning. As a result, we present the primitive analytical and methodological steps for the identification of aspects raised for the intervention of a plan of urban land occupation based on nature.

Biosphere Reserves are considered as means for the people who live and work within them to attain a balanced relationship with the natural and semi-natural environment. Moreover, they contribute to the needs of society by showing a way to a more sustainable future. The Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve partly surrounds the city of Vienna and other minor settlements, representing a well-developed example of Green Infrastructure (GI) of great cultural and natural value. Its heterogeneous landscape offers a variety of landscape services (LS). In this work, we quantified and mapped the capacity of LS offered by the open land elements of Wienerwald. Starting from a high-resolution dataset, we selected suitable indicator classes, and scored each ecological and socio-cultural service through an expert-based capacity matrix. The subsequent analyses with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) focused on the intensity and density of LS capacities by developing an index useful for mapping GI functionality. The work provides an effective monitoring tool for the Reserve's both ecological and socio-cultural sustainability performance. It also allows detecting resilient areas, by considering both the spatial distribution and the abundance of landscape elements.
Identification and calculation of ecosystem services for a regional park: a case study in Italy
This paper analyses the Ecosystem Services provided by a Regional Park in the South of Italy. The Park includes 12 municipalities and aims to a smart management of its cultural-historic and environmental heritage in a global vision. Both the Ecosystem Services, actually provided by the Park (e.g. the herbage intake fog grazing ruminants or the CO2 capture) or potentially usable (e.g. the olive-oil or biomass production) were analyzed. The aim is to highlight the essential importance of this natural capital stock for the local economy and for those who take benefit from them. Not considering Ecosystem Services' value in decision making processes entails the loss of several central elements-in some cases unreplaceable, such as local biodiversity-with serious consequences for the overall ecosystem, beyond the loss of potential economic profits.
Sustainability
A growing demand at several levels of territorial government concerns the need for tools to support policy-making oriented towards sustainable planning. That of Ecosystem Services (ES) represents a well-structured and robust methodological framework for developing tools to assess environmental performances and territorial transformations linked to different development needs. The paper fits into this frame by proposing an analytical framework based on the ES multifunctionality approach, i.e., the joint provision of multiple ES, and applying it to the Italian national context. The methodology defines a spatial model based on three aggregate indices (abundance, diversity and richness) assessed considering the Provinces as reference territorial units. Derived from ecological disciplines, these three dimensions of ES multifunctionality describe the variability with which territorial units deliver multiple services for community well-being and support the analysis of the relationships be...
D’Auria, A.; De Toro, P.; Fierro, N.; Montone, E. Integration between GIS and Multi-Criteria Analysis for Ecosystem Services Assessment: A Methodological Proposal for the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni (Italy), 2018
Ecosystem services play a fundamental role in society; their characteristics and the production of their natural generated capital are fundamental elements in the functioning of the support system of life on Earth. The loss of ecosystem services contributes to food and energy uncertainty, increases vulnerability to natural disasters, such as floods or tropical storms, decreases the level of health, reduces the availability and quality of water resources and affects cultural heritage. This study has conducted a quantitative estimate of ecosystem services and their evaluation for a wide, complex and sensitive area: The National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni, in Southern Italy. The assessment has been undertaken via a preliminary, partial evaluation model and further through the TOPSIS method. Research results have led to a scenario highlighting a dualism on the territory shaped by the differences between internal and coastal areas, defining themselves as complementary and necessary to each other. To improve the sustainable use of territorial resources, it is necessary to adopt policies and strategies from those that are available, always taking into account any possible conflict between conservation and development.
One Ecosystem
This study explores the use of ecosystem service (ES) knowledge to support urban planning in the assessment of future scenarios. The case study concerns the prioritszation of brownfield regeneration interventions in the city of Trento (Italy). Alternative planning scenarios considering the conversion of existing brownfields into new urban parks are assessed and compared. The assessment focuses on two ES of critical importance for the city, namely microclimate regulation and nature-based recreation. The benefits of the different scenarios are quantified based on the number of expected beneficiaries broken down into different vulnerability classes and then compared through a multi-criteria analysis. Three combinations of criteria and weights reflect different planning objectives and related decision-makers’ orientations about what ES and beneficiary groups should be prioritised. The application demonstrates the potential for ES assessments to support urban planning processes in the sp...
