Users Acting in Mixed Reality Interactive Storytelling

Entertainment systems promise to be a significant application for Mixed Reality. Recently, a growing number of Mixed Reality applications have included interaction with synthetic characters and storytelling. However, AIbased Interactive Storytelling techniques have not yet been explored in the context of Mixed Reality. In this paper, we describe a first experiment in the adaptation of an Interactive Storytelling technique to a Mixed Reality system. After a description of the real time image processing techniques that support the creation of a hybrid environment, we introduce the storytelling technique and the specificities of user interaction in the Mixed Reality context. We illustrate these experiments by discussing examples obtained from the system.

One promising application of Mixed Reality to entertainment has been the development of “interactive theatre” systems involving synthetic actors. However, these systems do not make use of the most recent advances in interactive storytelling technologies, which use Artificial Intelligence techniques to generate real time narratives featuring synthetic characters and supporting user intervention in the plot.

How will we adapt to a future that may see humans as an interplanetary species? The proposed project uses themes of outer space, future worlds and space travel to examine ways in which our future identities may be formed from these new environments, the role/s we may have in future societies; and the relationships that we will form with the people we will meet. The utilization of virtual and mixed reality (AR/VR) technologies can be a powerful tool in which to place the audience in different scenarios, to experience it from different viewpoints, and to allow them to anticipate what the future may look, feel like, and indeed be like, by being placed into a set of future space scenarios. This paper presents ideas from an interdisciplinary team of artists, scientists, and technologists of methodological approaches for art-science-technology and the prototypes anticipated through these dialogues.
Contextual information access and storytelling in mixed reality using hypermedia

This article describes gaming and storytelling activities in a mixed environment that integrates the real and virtual worlds, uses an augmented reality paradigm, and is supported by a structuring and presentation framework for use in context-aware mixed-reality applications. The basis of the framework is a generic hypermedia model that can handle different media elements, objects, and relations between spaces and locations in physical and virtual worlds. A main component of the model deals with providing contextual content according to the state of the application and the person using it. A storytelling layer was also defined, mainly by using the contextual mechanisms of the base model. This layer provides abstractions to storytelling applications that reflect the morphology of common story structures and supports gaming flow. The framework is being tested in a gaming and storytelling environment that integrates the real world, media elements, and virtual 3D worlds.
Interactive storytelling in a mixed reality environment merges digital and physical information and features. It usually uses an augmentation of the real-world and physically-based interaction to create an immersive experience that corresponds to the dramatic storyline of the interactive narrative influenced by the actions of the user. Immersiveness is a crucial aspect of such an installation, and can be influenced by multiple factors such as video, sounds, interaction and, finally, the density of all combined stimuli. We used one of the stages from our interactive ALICE installation to investigate immersiveness and its contributing factors in a between-group design with a special focus on the effects of interactivity, and the feedback and feedforward stimuli of the environment on the users' experiences. The study was carried out with 41 participants and the results showed that immersiveness not necessarily depends on the modality of stimuli, but instead on their time-density.
Object-focused mixed reality storytelling

In this paper we present the creation and deployment of a concerted set of Mixed Reality Technologies designed for creating engaging public experiences and enhanced storytelling opportunities focused on artefacts. Under the title of the Mixed Reality Storytelling (MXRS) project, we combined Internet of Things-inspired approaches and Virtual and Augmented Reality experience technologies, with 3D scanning content creation techniques, to create mobile and adaptable tools suitable for public engagements and industry partners, such as museums and galleries. We present 4 cases of public impact events where the tools were employed over a period of 2 years to create content from visitor contributions, which was then used in follow-on VR and AR engagements. We also demonstrate cases where the tools were used to create content for novel applications of cultural and social informatics.
