Inadequate hand hygiene remains one of the main reasons for the spread of hospital-acquired infections, and now it is regarded as a key element of infection control activities. Hand hygiene practices are faulty in most healthcare settings. The present study was aimed to determine knowledge on hand hygiene among final year medical undergraduates. This was an institution-based descriptive cross-sectional study. The study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital and medical college in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology after obtaining ethical clearance from the institution. Informed consent was obtained from all the participants. All participants were given self-reporting questionnaires to fill. OBJECTIVE Hand hygiene (HH) compliance is associated with effective prevention of health care-associated infections (HAI), the topic being very important due to current COVID-19 pandemic. There is a growing debate about the role of educational institutions in the low HH compliance of health workers. Background. Hand hygiene is a cost-effective method in preventing infection transmission. Hand hygiene practices have been found to be faulty in most healthcare settings. We conducted a study to evaluate the awareness, and compliance of hand hygiene among undergraduate medical students during their clinical phase in Qassim College of Medicine, Saudi Arabia.Methods. A questionnaire based on World Health Organization’s concept of “Five Moments for Hand Hygiene” was used to evaluate the awareness of the indications for hand hygiene and compliance was observed during Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) sessions. Sixty students including thirty-six males (60%) and twenty-four females (40%) participated voluntarily in the study.Results. Priority on patient safety in hospitals by the government and accreditation agencies is on the rise. With World Health Organization (WHO) reporting an increase in health care associated infections, there is a need to assess the knowledge and practice of the upcoming generation of doctors in this issue of safe health care delivery. Background: Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) are one of the most common problems encountered in health care. It is a major cause of concern for hospitals throughout the world. Methods: The study design was cross sectional and data was obtained from health care workers currently employed in hospitals. We selected tertiary care hospitals by convenient sampling technique. Data were analyzed through SPSS version 20. Results: A total of 330 health care workers were included in the study out of which 54.4% (180) were males and the rest 45.4% (150) were females. When the participants were asked of the minimum time required for alcohol based hand rub to eradicate the microorganisms, only 42% (138) were able to correctly answer that it takes 20 seconds. Conclusion: Our study identified considerable gaps in knowledge and practice in some key areas regarding hand hygiene which need re-emphasis through regular training sessions aim at keeping abreast with standard protocols of hand hygiene.

Objectives: To determine the knowledge of MBBS students of a public sector medical university regarding hand hygiene and to assess the practical implication of their knowledge regarding hand hygiene during the clinical postings. Medical students were asked regarding knowledge and beliefs on hand hygiene before entering the clinical phase of education. By this, we noticed a lack of knowledge concerning the correct indications for hand disinfection. Regardless of previous experience in hospitals, the medical students expected that the compliance towards hand hygiene would be worse in more experienced physicians and senior consultants-who are often considered to be role models for medical students.

Conclusion: Educational programs can improve the knowledge and performance of medical students in short and long time periods.

Students need to be oriented and they should be made aware by lectures, ABSTRACT Background: Hand hygiene is now regarded as one of the most important element of infection control activities. Medical students in their clinical training phase throng the healthcare facilities and can potentially transmit infections besides being the healthcare providers of future when their pattern of training will reflect on their infection control practices. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the knowledge of undergraduate medical students regarding hand hygiene practices. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out and data was collected by using "WHO hand hygiene knowledge questionnaire for health care workers" among 2 nd M.B.B.S medical students at Junagadh. Knowledge was graded as good, moderate or poor based on the total number of correct answers. Results: Total 123 students participated in the study. There were 65 (53%) females and 58 (47%) were males. The mean hand hygiene knowledge score (out of 25) was 15.05 (SD: ±2.37, 95% CI: 14.63-15.48). Majority of the participants (76%) had moderate knowledge of hand hygiene practices. Conclusions: In the present study majority of the students had not received formal training regarding hand hygiene practices. Majority of the students had moderate knowledge of hand hygiene. Incorporation of teaching and training of hand hygiene practice in the undergraduate teaching during the initial study years is the need of the hour to prevent further emergence of antimicrobial resistance and health care associated infections.
