Single Parenting: A Challenge To The Family In The Contemporary Society
2016
The family in the contemporary society has changed in form and content as compared to those of the yester years. The change can be witnessed through the rampant growth in strange modes of parenting which were hitherto uncommon especially among the Africans. This treatise explicates single mode of parenting particularly that of widowed single fathers and mothers with an aim of examining the challenges inherent in this mode of parenting. The paper also creates awareness that single parents are not just single mothers but includes single fathers as well.
IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2018
Under-age single motherhood is a family phenomenon that is hardly or inadequately talked about despite its flourishment in the contemporary society. While the in thing is to assume or pretend that it is non-existent, the common practice at best has been to illicitly merge it with single motherhood en masse notwithstanding the crucial distinction of categories each with specific source, peculiarities and potentialities. Such a serious lacuna warrants unreserved attention. The paper thus passionately chips in to fill up the gap by investigating this mode of motherhood specifically and in the light of Christian perception of family as a case in Thogoto Village, Kĩambu County-Kenya exploring factors like those of the causes, the difficulties such parenthood encounters and the recommended way forward. The work is more theological than sociological or anthropological in intent since it emphasizes Christian perception and reflections on family and parenting as well. The main objective of t...
A phenomenological study of children who were raised by single mothers
2021
This study explored the lived experiences of children who were raised by single mothers; either from birth or at later stages of their lives due to fathers passing away or parents separating and divorcing from one another. It focused on how they relate to themselves by being raised by single mothers and what effect it has had on their relationships with significant partners, paternal siblings, and other paternal family members. Five participants between the ages of 25 and 33 were from Vryheid, Kwa-Zula Natal and the one was from the East Rand, Gauteng. Qualitative research paradigm was used in this study. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to make sense of data. Findings revealed that although most participants viewed father presence as important, they also gave homage to their mothers and that mothers can raise successful children single-handedly. Particularly since some cited having experienced difficult relationships with their mothers but are still grateful for the sacrifices made by their mothers. Some participants had strict mothers and others have subsequently formed close friendships with their mothers as they went into adulthood. The majority of the participants had no relationship with the paternal families, and some attributed their success to their mothers or their maternal families. Although some participants experienced more than one form of abuse (financial and/or emotional), they have become positive contributors to society and do not view their childhood circumstances as a hinderance to them succeeding in life.

Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal, 2020
The present article aims at making a comparative study of widows’ plight in Binwell Sinyangwe’s A Cowrie of Hope and Bayo Adebowale’s Lonely Days. The plight of African widows is deplorable in African societies where the weight of customs and traditions makes them suffer a lot. In those societies, the maltreatment that men inflict on them is usually inhumane. People even suspect them of being at the origin of their husbands’ death in most cases. Such a situation calls for reflection as it has become a societal problem which deserves a particular attention. Hence the necessity to carry out this research work in order to pinpoint the ins and outs of such a phenomenon through a comparative study of widows’ plight in the selected novels. The methodological approach that I have used in this research work is documentary research. The study has found that the two widows have a similar plight as courageous and resilient women although their situations are not exactly the same in some aspect...

Purpose-The study is aimed to identify the openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality between mother and child as the key factors for successful children. If the parents are not able to give attention and love to their children, it will form feelings of insecurity and hatred towards themselves and to their surroundings. The well-being of children in a single-mother headed family: a case of Debre Tabor, Ethiopia
Although the family structure has been a crucial factor to Ethiopian children's well-being at all stages of their lives, previous research has not looked into the negative effects of the state of single motherhood on their children's well-being because the way the community responds to children of single mothers varies in different cultures. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to explore the well-being of children's growth in single mothers in different social contexts in the city of Debre Tabor, Ethiopia. A qualitative method with a descriptive multiple case study design was employed to examine children's wellbeing in single-motherheaded households. Eleven in-depth interviews with single mothers' children were conducted. To collect data, six key informant interviews with single mothers and teachers were done in Amharic (the participants' first language), as were three focus group talks with single mothers. The data were transcribed, translated, and thematically examined. Single mothers' informal economic survival was identified as a source of discomfort for children, and some community rites were classified as a source of neglect for their children, according to the study. Furthermore, children's concerns differ depending on the sort of single mother, and single mothers' diverse life challenges have a variety of effects on many aspects of their children's well-being. As a result, stakeholders should acknowledge single mothers and their children as a multifaceted, identifiable vulnerable group in the community, and implicit policy actions to improve the well-being of single mothers' children should be implemented.
