PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS OF COCCIDIOSIS IN SMALL RUMINANTS IN AND AROUND GONDAR TOWN DVM THESIS (original) (raw)

A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2022 to August 2022 in and around Gondar town. The aim of this study to investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of small ruminant coccidiosis. A total of 384 faecal samples were collected from six kebeles. The sample was processed with Centrifugal floatation technique to detect the oocysts of coccidian by using light microscope. χ2 - analysis methods were used to investigate associations of risk factors with coccidian infection in small ruminants. Therefore, the overall proportion of samples that was positive for coccidian infection was 39.6% while 44.1% in sheep and 33.1% in goats. The prevalence of coccidian infections with risk factors, age was the highest in 0 6 months (45.3%) and 6 12months (45.3%) than 12 24 months(33.3%) and >24 months(24.1%), body condition score was higher in poor(53.84%) than medium(39.88%) and good(27.8%), hygienic status houses in poor hygienic (49.7%) and good hygienic (32.4%) and sex was higher in females (44.5%) than males (33.5%). Significant difference was observed in the coccidian infection among the age group (χ2=10.464, P=0.015), Body condition score (χ2=11.580, P=0.001), sex (χ2=4.830, P=0.028), species (χ2=5.983, P=0.014) and the hygienic status of the house (χ2=11.580, P=0.001). Coccidiosis becomes a more important disease in sheep and goats in the study areas. Therefore advise the farmers in the study area to properly feed their animals and keep their houses clean, have an effective control and prevention program.
