ZENITH International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, 2015

ABSTRACT: In the dramatic impacts of tourism in the developed world which has improved, and often provide the necessary example, for developing countries to follow. Tourism obviously has advantage as a contributor to economic development that has other activities might not have. But this is only the one side of the coin. Beside tourism is also held responsible for climate change at number of destinations. Scientists have proved that there are continuous changes in the climate due to green house effect and tourism also contributes in it in the form of movement of people to destinations through automobiles and other means of transport. The continuous growth in the population and number of hotels at the destination is result in to loss of habitat to many animal species. Due to overuse of the place in the form of frequent walking by tourists to a place result in degradation of that area like in mountain areas it result into naked peaks. The tourists leave the garbage that causes pollution. All these impacts at the destinations are a matter of concern particularly for the researchers. The tourism development in India, too, is not free from such impacts. Population and Environment Challenges in India's Tourism Development Dr. Sanjay Kumar

isara solutions, 2021

Both population explosion and environmental degradation are becoming a challenge in tourism development. In the context of India, this seems to be proving to be absolutely correct. The development work being done to meet the needs of the growing population is harming the natural resources and their consumption is also increasing rapidly. As long as the growing population does not stop, the wastage of natural resources will not stop. The speed with which the population is increasing in India is really a matter of concern. Due to this increasing population, unemployment and poverty are also increasing in the country. The tourism industry is playing an important role in generating employment and foreign exchange. It is the third largest foreign exchange earner for the country, which has an important place in the country's GDP. But the tourism industry is also facing many difficulties due to environmental degradation. Due to the environment, there is a decline in foreign and domestic tourists, due to which there is a possibility of reduction in employment and foreign exchange. Therefore we can say that both population explosion and environmental degradation are presenting a challenge before the tourism industry. There is an urgent need for the government to pay more attention to this and should sincerely take concrete and necessary steps to remove it.

Environment-friendly tourism for sustainable economic development in India

International Journal of Commerce and Business Management, 2010

Tourism is widely being recognized by the governments the world over as a sector with immense potential for economic development and employment generation. Various international agencies like World Tourism Organization (WTO) have pointed out the vast developmental potential of tourism, particularly with reference to the developing nations, like India. It has been estimated that economies like India and China would emerge as the superpowers in world tourism by the years 2020.Of late, Asia Pacific region is fast growing in tourism though the region as a whole has been rather lagging behind the world. Similarly, India has also been late in encouraging tourism as a means of economic development, but the scenario has changed since the early 2000s. For instance, in the year 2006, the foreign tourists arrivals in India (4.45 million) have been almost double that of 1996 (2.29 million), while the earnings have almost tripled during the period, from Rs. 10046 Crore to Rs.29604 Crore. Further, in line with the above increasing trend, for the seven months’ period January to July 2007 the provisional figures stand at 2.76 million as against 2.47 for the corresponding period of 2006. However, in spite of the appreciable growth in tourism over the last few years and also the excellent prospects that the industry offers for economic development there are growing apprehensions regarding the sustainability of tourism as a development paradigm because of various reasons, but most importantly the adverse impacts of tourism on the environment. Accordingly, it is widely believed that environment friendly tourism alone can be sustainable for development in the long run. In the above context, this paper seeks to (i) make an overall review of the current status of global tourism and its trends and patterns, (ii) make a detailed analysis of Indian tourism, its development over the years, problems and prospects, (iii) strategies for sustainable tourism development in India, with focus on environment friendly tourism. The paper considers, inter alia, relevant global experiences, ever-growing environmental issues, and after all the peculiar socioeconomic, geographic and such other features characteristic of the Indian union.

A Comparative Study on the Environmental Impact Due To Tourism Development on Two Tourist Centres of Kerala-Varkala and Kalpetta

Tourism Industry is a major contributor of solid wastes. Being floating population tourists do not show much responsibility and interest in handling the waste generated by them. The real sufferers are the host population and the wild life who starve for fresh air and fresh drinking water. Kerala is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Named as one of the ten paradises of the world by National Geographic Traveler, it is famous especially for its ecotourism initiatives. Growing at a rate of 13.31%, the tourism industry is a major contributor to the state's economy. In 2016 as around 10.3 lakh foreign and 1.32 crore domestic tourists came visiting the state generating a total tourism revenue of 38000 crore. The prominent social problems created by tourism development is the environmental damage and health risk associated with it. Mismanaged solid waste is the driving force behind all the environmental issues. In spite of all disadvantages, undoubtedly, tourism acts as a catalyst for the economic development of an area. The main objectives of the paper is to compare the environmental problems, air, water, noise pollution and solid waste problems prevailing in the two selected tourist centres Varkala and Kalpetta. A sample of 49 residents are selected by Simple Random Sampling. The selection of the ratio 26:23 is fixed based on the proportion of total number of residents on these two Centres. In addition one expert each from each centre is selected and information is gathered from them by interview method to know the waste profile, waste treatment and disposal options. The tools used for analysis of primary data consist

Tourism and consequential environmental degradation: An unfolding equation of impacts in Indian context

India’s cultural legacy is one of the world’s most distinct and diverse and it is an inspiration that draws ever growing number of tourists every year to our world famed heritage monuments, colossal forts, royal palaces, museums, libraries, as well as to geographically diverse scenic landscapes. Various cultural heritage sites, performing arts, crafts, and natural resources have all been used in attracting the tourists. This approach, however, may reduce the significance of cultural heritage and the environmental assets to an economic commodity minimizing or sometime completely ignoring their socio-cultural values. Moreover converging of a large number of tourists of different background on a historic monument or site and location of tourists facilities on the cultural heritage sites have often resulted not only in altering of the original features but also in all kind of pollution damaging or even destroying the fabric of the monuments and works of art. The combined impact of attack due atmospheric pollution, urbanization, excessive tourism, solid waste generation, negligence, and inappropriate restoration measures often results in irremediable changes and, in some cases, even the complete disappearance of immovable and movable heritage. The objectives of this paper is to understand and investigate the nexus between environmental degradation and tourism development, its impact on the tourism areas, besides the protection / conservation of heritage structures when these environmental and cultural threats continue to multiply with each passing day.

Adequacy of Environmental Legal Framework in Indian Tourism Industry

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2013

Tourism and the environment are two independent terms, but could be easily associated with each other. Tourism industry has attained very important place in economy specially due to its rapid and spectacular growth over the last few decades but ironically, with the rapid development of tourism all over the world; a lots of concern has been came into the notice of the world. PATA and WTO in a full time conference at Bali in 1993, has discussed the relationship between tourism and environment. India is one of nations, which have enacted such legislation and has set up a separate Ministry of Environment and Forest to monitor the land use from the environmental perspective. The whole mechanism from district to central level has helped in the enforcement of these laws. Moreover, legislation can be one of the efficient control mechanisms to maintain harmonious relationship between tourism and environment. Similarly Ministry of Tourism is responsible for the inbound tourism in India. The authors will also try to give various suggestions in order to make balance between environmental issues and tourism industry so that an environmental friendly tourism can be developed for making better tomorrow. The paper will pay an special emphasis on the concept of eco-tourism, which is in trend and developing stage. In this paper we will also try to discuss the joint effort of Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Environment to counter the contemporary problems related to environment and tourism.
