2020. γραμμα, γραφη, in Historical and Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint (HTLS)

This large-scale collective and interdisciplinary project aims to produce a new research tool: a multi-volume dictionary providing an article of between two and ten pages (around 600 articles in all) for each important word or word group of the Septuagint. Filling an important gap in the fields of ancient philology and religious studies, the dictionary is based on original research of the highest scientific level. The dictionary will consist of four volumes and all articles are written in English. The first volume is to be published in 2020. Each volume will be available at a single volume's price. The subscription price on the four volumes will be approx. 15 percent below the single volume's price.

4.15 Problems and Perspectives in Septuagint Lexicography: The Case of Non-Compliance (ἀπειθέω)

This paper assesses the possibilities and limitations of a Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint in the light of the current state of Septuagint lexicography and the opportunities offered by the new digital tools, such as the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri, the Hewlett-Packard on-line searchable Greek inscriptions, Perseus, Demetrios, Trismegistos, TLG online etc. that allow for a complete search of attestations of a Greek lexeme in Antiquity. As a sample for such a study and entry for the intended Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint, the Greek word ἀπειθέω is examined. The word occurs regularly in the Septuagint as equivalent for a variety of Hebrew expressions and reflects a specific ideological interest of the Greek translators of the Pentateuch and their followers (Greek Joshua, Greek Isaiah). A study of the attestations of the word in contemporary papyri makes clear that the usage of the word should not be confused with that of ἀπιστεύω in the way we find it in New Testament writings (Acts, Pauline Epistles).

Recent developments in Septuagint research

HTSTheological Studies, 2018

The time and opportunity have finally arrived for the next phase of Septuagint research. Even though not all the books of the LXX has been prepared by the Septuaginta Unternehmens in Göttingen, by far the largest number of books have been assigned and prepared – see the article “The duration of the the LXX-Pentateuch Project,” JSCS 43 (2010): 41–51. Thus text-critical work has largely been completed, or is in the process of being prepared. The next phase, hermeneutical research is at hand (see the presidential address of Johann Cook at IOSOT2016 held at Stellenbosch 4-9th of Sept, entitled “Interpreting the Septuagint”, published in VTS 176 2017, 1-22). This phase naturally requires correct methodology. This obtains to an acceptable textual theory as well as the reconstruction of the textual history of the LXX. This paper takes the Septuagint of Proverbs as point of comparison and discusses the following issues: NOVAL RESEARCH, New monographs, new projects, exegetical commentaries and the need for the formulation of a theology of the LXX
