Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes in Patients with Genital Warts in Gorgan, Iran

Background and objectives: Low-risk and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes are the main cause of anogenital warts. The present study aimed to determine prevalence of HPV genotypes in patients with anogenital warts in Gorgan, northeast of Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 40 biopsy samples were taken from patients with anogenital warts in Gorgan, Iran. After DNA extraction, multiplex polymerase chain reaction was carried out for detecting HPV genotypes 54, 18, 16 and 6. Demographic characteristics of subjects including gender, age, education level, marital status, smoking and method of contraception were also collected. Data were analyzed in SPSS 16 software at statistical significance of 0.05. Results: The mean age of male and female patients was 31.81±6.9 and 27.95±6.92 years, respectively. The frequency of HPV-6, HPV-16 and HPV-54 was 77%, 15% and 7.5%, respectively. In addition, HPV-18 was not detected in the collected specimens. Co-infection of HPV-54 with HPV-6 and HPV-16 was also observed in some cases. No significant association was found between HPV infection and age, gender, smocking, contraceptive method and education level. Conclusions: Similar to previous studies in Iran and other countries, HPV type 6 is the predominant cause of genital warts in Gorgan, Iran. Further studies with a larger study population are needed to explore the role of other contributors to HPV-induced genital warts.

The Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes in Women with Genital Warts Using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Background: The genotypic distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) needs to be determined with detail as it is an important issue when it comes to public health and preparing vaccines since the HPV type may be different in various areas. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. High Frequency of Human Papillomavirus Genotype 16 Among Patients With Anogenital Warts

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is considered the most prevalent sexually transmitted virus infection. Human Papillomavirus 16 and 18 have been documented as high-risk HPV infections and responsible for 70% of all cervical cancers. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine HPV genotypes in patients with anogenital warts. Patients and Methods: In this study lesion samples were collected from 54 patients with an age ranged of 19 to 44 years. Initially, DNA extraction was carried out for all samples followed by detection of HPV DNA by the polymerase chain reaction. The positive PCR products were sequenced and the results were blasted to determine HPV genotypes. Results: Out of 54 samples, 46 (85.18%) cases showed positive results for HPV DNA. A total of 26 (56.6%) samples were males and 20 (43.4%) females while eight (14.81%) showed HPV negative results. Overall, 37 (80%) patients had multiple sexual partners, and nine (20%) had one sexual partner. The frequency of anogenital warts was higher in married patients. The results of sequencing revealed that frequency of HPV16, HPV11 and HPV6 was 58.69%, 26.08% and 15.21%, respectively. Conclusions: Human Papillomavirus 16 as a high risk HPV was found to have the highest frequency among patients with anogenital warts.

Determinants of hgh-risk human papillomavirus infection in anogenital warts

Introduction: Genital warts are benign epithelial tumours caused by human papilloma viruses (HPV), and are sexually transmitted. Genotyping of genital HPV bears great clinical significance in terms of treatment planning, follow-up, and prevention strategies. Aim: To evaluate the distribution of high-risk HPV infection types in patients diagnosed with anogenital warts. Material and methods: A total of 66 patients with anogenital warts were enrolled. Punch biopsy samples were obtained from the lesions of each patient. After nucleic acid purification and DNA extraction, the presence of HPV DNA was ascertained using the PCR method, followed by HPV DNA genotyping. The relationship between HPV type distribution and age, gender, clinical location, and number of sexual partners was investigated. Results: Genotyping was performed and HPV genome was detected in 50 tissue samples (75.8%). Low-risk genotypes predominated with a prevalence of 62.1% (42/66). The most prevalent genotypes were HPV-6 (47%), and HPV-11 (13.6%). Other types detected included HPV-18 and HPV-3. Conclusions: Genotyping of HPV provides significant clinical information regarding this family of viruses that play a role in the aetiology of a variety of genital cancers, as some of these malignancies are now considered preventable due to recent development of vaccines. We believe that our results may provide guidance on future vaccination programs in our country.

Prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) genotypes between outpatients males and females referred to seven laboratories in Tehran, Iran

Background: Human papilloma virus (HPV) causes the most common sexually-transmitted infection especially among sexually-active individuals. The aim of study was to characterize the molecular characterization of HPV genotypes between 5176 female and male patients. Methods: HPV DNA was extracted from genital swabs of the study participants and amplified by Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Genotyping was performed for 2525 cases using REALQUALITY RQ-Multi HPV Detection Kit for the identification of 14 high risk (HR) and 2 low risk (LR) HPV genotypes. Demographic figures were analyzed in correlation with virological data statistically. Results: Out of 5176 cases from 7 laboratories, 2727 (53%) were positive for HPV, of which. 2372(87%) women and 355 (13%) men were HPV positive. However, in an intra-gender analysis, positive rate was higher in men (355/637, 55.7%) than in women (2372/4539, 52%; P value 0.007). HPV positive patients were younger than negative individuals. Positive rate was higher among age categories 20-40. Genotyping was performed for 2525 cases. Out of 1219 (48%) patients who contained single genotypes, 566 (22%) and 653 (26%) harboured HR and LR genotypes, respectively. In females and males, 1189 (54%) and 117 (37%) contained multiple genotypes. No substantial associations were found between different age categories and HR/LR and multiple genotypes distribution. Conclusion: The prevalence of HPV infection in both genders was high. However, men had a higher rate of infection. These observations highlighted the necessity for a plan for targeted education to younger population in the society as well as application of infection control measures against HPV infection, especially in terms of general population mass HPV vaccination.

Prevalence of various Human Papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes among women who subjected to routine Pap smear test in Bushehr city (South west of Iran) 2008-2009

Background: Some genotypes of human papillomaviruses can infect the genital tract and they are important infectious agents which their oncogenicity is regardable. Thus the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of various genital human papillomaviruses (HPV) among women being subjected to routine pap smear test in Bushehr city of Iran. Results: Based on the collected data, 11(5.5%) samples were detected positive for HPV DNA and 189(94.5%) samples out of 200 samples were detected negative for HPV DNA. Meanwhile 4(2%) samples detected positive for HPV DNA by PCR were detected positive for HPV by pap smear test as well. On the other hand 5 samples which were detected positive for HPV by pap smear test didn't have HPV DNA after being tested by PCR method. Among the 11 positive samples 7 samples were identified as HPV-16, 3 samples were HPV-18 and one was HPV-53. Conclusion: Regarding the prevalence of highly carcinogen genotypes of HPV in our study determination of genital HPV prevalence among the normal population of women of Bushehr city is recommended.

Retrospective Analysis of Prevalence of High-risk and Low-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Genotypes in Iranian Women During 2013-2016

Background and objective: Considering the importance of HPV in cancer etiology, awareness of HPV prevalence and frequency of high-risk genotypes could help improve health care system management. We analyzed HPV prevalence in women forms different provinces of Iran that is the largest sample till now. Material and Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 2969 outpatient and suspicious women aged 17- 78 referred to Noor pathobiology laboratory from 24 provinces of Iran were studies. DNA extraction and PCR were performed on samples and then HPV genotypes were also determined using hybridization kit. Results: HPV DNA was detected in 29.3% of valid liquid-based samples. Among HPV positive cases, 67.2% and 52.0% accounted for high-risk and low-risk HPV subtypes, respectively. Human Papilloma Virus Frequency and Genotype Distribution in a Turkish Population

Objectives: To determine human papillomavirus (HPV) frequency, genotypes and the relation between cervical smear results, risk factors and types in women living in Manisa, Turkey. Materials and Methods: A total of 410 women were included in the study. Cervical specimens were obtained for linear array HPV genotyping and pathological testing. Conventional Pap test and Bethesda system were used for evaluation of cytology specimens. Results: A total of 410 women with a mean age of 34.9 years were tested. A positive result of any HPV was found in 35 patients (8.5%). Among them, 26 different serotypes of HPV were identified and the most frequent type was HPV 16 (28.5%) followed by type 45 and 53 (11.4%). Patients were infected by 65.7% high risk, 11.4% probable high risk and 22.9% low risk HPV types. Multiple HPV positive results were found in 13 patients (37.1%). Patients with single partner, history of abnormal smear or condyloma had positive HPV results and this was statistically significant (p<0.05). Correlation analysis showed a statistically weak relation between positive HPV and abnormal smear results (r=0.120). Conclusions: Determining HPV types of genital HPV infections is important for epidemiological studies. We have found the rate of positive HPV as 8.5% which implies the need for extended screening programs in order to diagnose oncogenic HPV at an early stage.

High risk genotype distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) according to age groups in Iranian asymptomatic men

Background The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted viruses worldwide.
