In India sthalavrikshas worship in temples was a religrous practice. In Tamil Nadu almost every temple is associated with a plant or tree connected to the history and mythology of the temple and or deity. The worshipper who comes to the temple attains a healty spiritua; enlighten. Sthalavrikshas is a natural tree found in the temple site brfore construction of the temple. The present investigation was carried out in coimbatore district to enumerate the sthalavrikshas associate with temple by field observation method. During the field visit temples were frequently visited and surveyed for the sthalavrikshas from the month of December 2019 - February 2020. The survey was conduced at 46 ancient temples of the coimbatore district and revelated the occurrence of 19 sthalavrikshas species were observed in different area of coimbatore district. Conservation and Management of Sacred groves in Theni District, Tamil Nadu, India
Sacred groves are one of the most valuable, but primitive practices of nature conservation. These are the relict climax communities preserved by the local people for certain beliefs. Such forests are rich in biological diversity and harbor many endangered plant species including rare herbs and medicinal plants. Case studies on sacred groves show that these small forest patches play an important role in biodiversity conservation. Maintenance of these groves through traditional methods of community based conservation that does not require government involvement. In this study, we discuss current threats to sacred groves that need to be addressed through management approaches in particular it deals with the status and floristic richness of these groves in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. Many of the groves are managed by individual family, and conserved by the local community through community control mechanisms by evolving several taboos and restrictions.

Areas covering native plant and tree species protected on behalf of religious grounds are known as sacred groves. Apart from India, sacred groves occur in various countries including America, Australia, Africa, Asia and Europe. They are not merely patches of forests but are islands in desolated landscapes. Many valuable medicinal plants and wild relatives of cultivated species are residing in sacred groves which have got tremendous roles to play in species or tree improvement programmes. Ancient sacred groves should be treated as possessing “Incomparable Values” according to the National Environment Policy of India. This paper reviewed extensively, analyzed and presented the current status on these invaluable resource pockets in India.
Role of Temples and Other Holy Places in Plant Conservation of Odisha, India

An ethnobotanical survey of plants associated with temple rituals and nurtured in the temple yards or gardens in the Jajpur district of Odisha was been carried out during 2009-11. A total of 84 plant species of both trees, shrubs, herbs or climbers have been collected and identified from different temple premises and adjoining areas. Twelve (12) species are found to be exclusively planted and carefully nurtured for their particular utility. Moreover, some plants are considered sacred and planted as well as worshipped on specific occasions. Those plants are available rarely in wild but protected and saved from extinction being associated with religious places in this district.

Plants have been, since time immemorial, the focus of religious purposes for many human societies worldwide. Because of efficacious use in religious aspects, some plant species are said to be important. Certain plants are held sacred due to their intimate association with special locations like temple courtyards. These locations are easily overlooked for scientific investigations. People are closely associated with the plant-wealth in such places as well although on religious ground. These need to be tapped for indigenous wisdom for human welfare. The present authors inventorised three districts of Khandesh region (Maharashtra) to divulge plantlore. Ecological and Conservation studies on five sacred groves of Thiruvananthapuram district
Five sacred groves from Thiruvananthapuram district were selected for the study based on the geography of the land as the terrain is undulating. A field survey was conducted in these groves in April 2015. The study included the socio-cultural aspects of the groves and the tree species were documented. The sacred groves bigger in size were religiously well protected. The biodiversity of the groves were distinct from the surrounding areas. The ecology of the groves was mainly influenced by anthropogenic pressures. Government must provide assistance, economic remuneration and awards for the protection of groves from further fragmentation.
