Influence of wooden floor surface finish on its hardness und resistance to abrasion
Annals of Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. Forestry and Wood Technology, 2013
Influence of wooden floor surface finish on its hardness and resistance to abrasion. Traditional methods of wood impregnation consisted in soaking it with substances of natural origin: vegetable oils, beet sugar, cane sugar, paraffin, colophony, waxes, potassium alum, etc. The surface of antique wooden parquets was soaked with wax or with oils. The research was aimed at specifying the properties of different finish coatings used as traditional means of wooden floor surface finishing, by analysing the changes in hardness and resistance to abrasion of samples without finish coating and samples covered with wax, varnish (natural linen oil), as well as contemporary synthetic parquet oil combined with wax oil. Research was carried out on antique and contemporary wood samples. The tests of wood hardness were done in accordance with the Brinell method, in line with the PN-EN 1534:2011 standard. The abrasion resistance was measured with the Taber method on the basis of mass loss, in accorda...

An influence of contemporary oil coatings on the aesthetical properties and abrasion resistance of oak wood parquets. The article analyses the influence of oil coatings on the colour, gloss, and abrasion resistance of parquets made of oak wood. Popular oil coatings of the same brand were compared: two-ingredient oil, single-ingredient oil and wax oil. A comparison of properties of several different kinds of oil manufactured by the same brand reveals that they do have influence on the changes in wood properties, when comparing to wood without finish. Single-ingredient and two-ingredient oil darken the colour, increase in red colour and in yellow colour to a similar extent, while wax oil darkens it and increase the share of red and yellow colour less. As to gloss, there are no statistically significant differences between the influence of the different oils. Twoingredient oil practically does not change resistance to abrasion at all, while single-ingredient oil and wax oil reduce the ...
Statistical analysis of 19th century wooden tile parquet abrasion test results
Annals of Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. Forestry and Wood Technology, 2014
Statistical Analysis of 19th Century Wooden Tile Parquet Abrasion Test Results. In order to preserve wooden parquets from antique buildings located in South-Eastern Poland, we assessed their usage properties in accordance with the conservation doctrine from the Act on Monument Protection of 2003. The fact that elements of wooden parquets have been preserved for almost 200 years shows that the wood quality was high. The aim of the analysis is to compare oak, ash, pine and elm samples of wooden elements without finish collected from parquets in the Tarnowiec, Falejówka and Przewrotne manor houses and contemporary parquet materials made of solid wood, taking into account the abrasion wear measured by mass loss. Another purpose of the analysis is to specify the significance of factors such as wood species and climate for the wood’s resistance to abrasion. The abrasion resistance was measured with the Taber method on the basis of mass loss, in accordance with PN-EN ISO 5470-1:2001 standa...
Interactions of Coating and Wood Flooring Surface System Properties
Coatings
Parquet flooring is one of the most common types of flooring, the surface of which can be covered with various coatings. To avoid possible damage to the parquet during use, it is necessary to test the surfaces before installation according to various non-standard and standard protocols. The present study provides an overview of the interactions between the properties of selected waterborne coatings (solids content, hardness, resistance to cracking, tensile strength) and the properties of oak wood flooring surfaces (dry film thickness, coating adhesion, resistance to scratching, impact, abrasion and cold liquids). The tests conducted showed that the performance of the surface systems was highly dependent on the coating formulations, as they were either one- or two-component systems. Although no major differences in surface resistance to cold liquids were found, there was a correlation between coating thickness, hardness and tensile strength. The harder coatings had higher tensile str...
Effect of pressing conditions on some surface properties of HDF laminate parquets
2016
In this study, the effects of lamination conditions on some commercial high density fiberboard (HDF) panels surface quality characteristics, surface strength, impact resistance test (large diameter ball test), curing degree, scratch resistance, abrasion resistance are investigated. For this purpose, HDF panels are produced from mixture wood fibers (50% black pine and 50% beech wood) as 8.3 mm thickness. After panels sanded to 7.3 mm thickness, laminated at different pressures and times. It has been found that high pressure and short-term press time conditions have significant effect on surface strength, impact resistance, and abrasion resistance values. The best surface quality measurements are obtained from A1 group, pressure 340 kg/m2 and 13 s pressing time (average of surface strength value of this group is 1.83 N/mm, impact resistance value is 25.25 N and abrasion resistance value is 3650 revolution), but the lowest value is B3 groups, 320 kg/m2 pressure and pressing time of 18 ...
The objective of this study was to investigate the surface properties of a UV-system applied on laminated parquet made with untreated and heat treated wood (ThermoWood). In this study, wood specimens prepared from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) wood were heat treated according to ThermoWood method at 190oC for 2 hours and at 212oC for 1 and 2 hours adhesion strength, pendulum hardness, surface roughness, colour and glossiness were determined. The UV-system was applied in two different types according to manufacturer recommendations. Results show that lightness and glossiness decreases and red colour tone increases with heat treatment. Pendulum hardness increased initially, decreasing afterwards with the intensity of the heat treatment. Tests showed that adhesion generally decreased with heat treatment. No significant differences were found for the surface roughness although a slight decrease was observed.
Influence of wooden floor surface finish on its resistance and scratches
Annals of Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. Forestry and Wood Technology, 2013
Influence of wooden floor surface finish on its resistance to scratches. The investigation of traditional wooden floor surface finish properties was also related to the changes in resistance to scratches of samples without finishing and samples covered with wax, with varnish and with contemporary parquet oil combined with wax oil. Research was carried out on antique and contemporary wood samples. The tests of resistance to scratches were performed on the basis of the PN-EN 438-2:2005 standard. The standard is used for finish coating tests and is not an accurate tool for testing wood without finish. In accordance to that standard, all the tested samples fall in the same group, because continuous scratches appeared already in case of the 1N force. However, the divergence between the degree of scratching was significant for different wood species, as well as for contemporary and antique wood. Therefore, the test results were calculated for the width of the scratches. We assumed that th...
Comparative study on the physico-mechanical characteristics for five types of wood flooring
Constructii: Journal of Civil Engineering Research, 2014
During the period 1600-1700, the first works with parquet elements at Versailles Palace were performed, but the high cost has made that the wooden floor to be an exclusivist product for a long time. Currently, in the last 30 years, the most innovations in flooring industry were aimed to improve the technological process, the easing of work, to reduce the losses of raw materials and to reduce the production costs. The experimental research conducted worldwide has shown that the wood processing technology, up to the flooring finite element, plays an important role in achieving a superior quality and durability and that the finishing systems have to be applied depending on the conditions of the area of use. This paper is a comparative study regarding the physico-mechanical characteristics for five types of wood flooring manufactured and marketed in Romania. In the experimental research, there were analyzed: the behavior of the floor assemblies under linearly distributed and concentrate...
Effects of thermal modification of oak wood upon selected properties of coating systems
BioResources
In the last few years there has been an increased demand to change the natural color of valuable hardwoods without chemicals for use mainly in indoor parquet floors. In this study, wood samples from oak (Quercus petraea L.), one of the most used species for parquet, were heat treated (ThermoWood method) at 190 °C for 2 h and at 212 °C for 1 and 2 h. Untreated and heat treated wood surfaces were coated following two different applications: type 1, with a single layer of sealer (50 g/m2) and type 2 with two layers (35 g/m2) using a nanolacke varnishing system. The objective of this study was to investigate surface properties including adhesion, glossiness, pendulum hardness, and color (L*, a*, b*, ΔE*, ΔL*, Δa*, and Δb*). With heat treatment the lightness decreases, and its decrease is higher for higher temperatures and treatment times. Type 2 coated wood presented a slightly lower lightness decrease. The experiment showed a slight increase followed by a decrease in redness (lower a*)...

Abrasion resistance is an important property for the functional performance and serviceability of timber floors. Although hardness is the conventional criterion used in selecting species for flooring applications, it shows greater variations and restricts the use of low-density species, whereas abrasion resistance could generate a more reliable indication of a product’s surface performance. Eucalyptus nitens is a fast-grown global plantation species extensively available in Tasmania, Australia. Until recently, this material has been perceived as unsuitable for appearance applications such as flooring. This study assesses several engineered flooring prototypes comprised of E. nitens—sawlog managed and fibre-managed resources—compared to an existing market product (E. obliqua and a commercial engineered timber flooring product with UV-cured coating). Tests were performed in accordance with the EN 14354:2016, sandpaper method using Taber abraser and further modified to test flooring pr...
