Alcohol Use in Selected Low-Income Neighbourhoods in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria

Background: Alcohol holds an important role in social engagement in southeast Nigeria. It is considered pleasurable by many who drink it in mild or moderate quantities. Studies show an increasing trend in alcohol consumption, including among adolescents. Aim: The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence and pattern of alcohol use among adolescents living in urban settlements in Enugu Urban, Southeast Nigeria. Materials & Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted, using purposive sampling method. Using semi-structured questionnaires, we obtained information on their biodata, medical history, alcohol consumption profiles and a few other lifestyle behaviors. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 23. Results: A total of 473 youngsters aged 10 yeras-19 years were recruited from the two settlements. Females (mean age 15.4 years) were also older than males (mean age 14.8 years) p=0.02. The prevalence of current alcohol use within the preceding 4 weeks was 23.7% (112/473). Males drank alcohol more frequently than females (31.8% vs. 17.8%). p<0.01) and local brew (palm wine) was the commonest alcoholic consumed 40 (35.7%). The amount of alcohol consumed (in grams) rose sharply after the age of 15 years with a steeper gradient being observed among the males. Conclusion: This study shows that there was a moderate rate of alcohol use among adolescents in the study population which increased sharply after 15 years of age. There is therefore a need for public health enlightenment targeted at adolescents both in school and in the community, to highlight the dangers of excessive alcohol use thereby preventing future alcoholism and consequent heart, vascular, brain and liver diseases that may ensue.

Factors Associated with Alcohol Consumption among Adolescents in Selected Secondary Schools in a Local Government Area of Oyo State, Southwest, Nigeria

Alcohol use during adolescence and young adulthood remain a prominent public health problem. This study identifies factors associated with alcohol consumption among adolescents in selected secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Southwest, Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study was used. One hundred and seventysix (176) respondents were consecutively selected using the random technique. Data were analyzed using chi-square and hypotheses tested at a 5% level of significance. Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents had poor knowledge of alcohol consumption, while (36.4%) of the respondents had consumed alcoholic beverages. Over half (54.5%) engaged in drinking alcohol as a result of peer influence. The majority (70%) of them had good knowledge of factors influencing alcohol consumption and factors influencing consumption among the respondents. Thus, the rate of alcohol consumption among adolescents was low (36.4%) as a larger percentage (64.6%) of them did not consume alcohol owing to their knowledge of the effect and the presence of some protective factors within the environment. In conclusion, alcohol consumption among adolescents was low, knowledge of its consumption was high, and it was associated with its actual consumption. Alcohol use is also associated with peer influence and environmental variables, while age and gender did not have any relationship with alcohol consumption. Therefore, educational intervention to improve knowledge of the consequences of alcohol consumption among adolescents and public policies with preventive educational campaigns was recommended.

Substance Abuse among Adolescents: Prevalence and Patterns of Alcohol consumption among senior secondary school students in Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria

The prevalence in the use of alcohol calls for concern especially in the hands of adolescents. This study therefore sought to determine the Prevalence and Patterns of Alcohol Use among Senior Secondary School Students in Abraka, Delta state, Nigeria. This was a cross sectional study among 456 respondents drawn from 4 randomly selected mixed secondary schools in Abraka. The respondents were Senior Secondary School Students who were selected through multi-stage random sampling. Data collected were analysed with SPSS Version 20. Majority (97%) of the respondents were aged 11-20 years; 52% were males; 95% were Christians and 77% lived with both parents. Alcohol use prevalence was 55%; there were more male(35%) than female(20%) drinkers; 66% consumed beer, 86% of them consumed alcoholic wine; 45% began drinking at 11-15 years; 42% drank at ceremonies; 10% drank for pleasure; 22% drank because they feel it was a sociable thing to do; 4% and 2% respectively drink because their parents and friends also drank.71% were currently drinking; Alcoholic wines are most favoured. Alcohol drinking habit was associated with gender but not with religion and class specialization. In conclusion, alcohol use prevalence among senior secondary school students in Abraka was quite high, with most of the students initiating the habit at an early age. The prevalent socio-cultural environment and traditions appeared to be a key factor in this community. There is need, therefore, to develop viable underage preventive programmes on alcohol use for adolescents in this community.

Correlates of Alcohol Consumption among Adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria

Alcohol consumption is a behavioural problem defined relative to age and is considered problematic below a certain age or stage in life. Young people by virtue of their stage in development are likely to engage in drinking alcohol. The aim of the paper is to examine the correlate of alcohol consumption among adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government area of Oyo State, Nigeria. The paper was based on the social action theory and it adopted the survey design and multi-stage sampling procedure to elicit information from 313 adolesce nts. Patterns of Alcohol Consumption and Socio-Demographic Factors among Women in North Central Nigeria

The patterns of alcohol consumption among females is of enormous public health concerns, as harmful consumption poses danger to their health, welfare, children and to the civil society. The study objectives were to determine the current prevalence of alcohol use, the related socio-demographic factors and the patterns of alcohol consumption. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study in Jos North Local Government Area, carried out from March to July, 2017 after ethical clearance was obtained. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select the participants who were age 18 years and above. A total of 272 females with an age range of 18 to 60 years responded. The mean age was 28.8±8.6 years. Majority 112(41.2%) were in the age group of 25-34 years. Most of them were never married 168 (61.8%), protestants 151(55.4%) and had secondary education 97(35.7%). Drinking behaviour and social change among youths in Nigeria — A study of two cities

Earlier studies on alcohol use in Nigeria identified young and middle-aged male adults as mainly concerned. In the last decade however, there has been a noticeable trend of youths getting more and more involved in alcohol use. Some of these latter studies, apart from indicating the increasing involvement of the female sex, have also shown various pathologies associated with alcohol use in Nigeria youths. Most of these reports only looked at alcohol use in the broader context of drug and alcohol abuse in the Nigerian society. However, in the present cross-sectional study of drug use involving 2079 senior secondary school students in two major cities of Nigeria Ubadan and Abeokutal, prevalence rates of alcohol use was 56% for Ibadan and 51.5% for Abeokuta. The male/female ratio of the users was 1.1: 1 in Ibadan and 1.2 : 1 in Abeokuta. Males used alcohol significantly more than females in each of the two cities P < 0.0251. Alcohol use was found more common among younger students in the lower school classes and also among those from higher and medium socioeconomic background. Among contributing factors were parental deprivation and delinquency. Alcohol users were also found to be more involved in accidents and the use of other psycho-active drugs than non-users.

Relationship Between Gender of School-Going Adolescents and Alcohol Consumption in Ilorin, Nigeria

Alcohol use among school-going adolescents has reached levels that give practitioners in the helping, teaching and health professions serious concerns. This study focused on the relationship between gender of school-going adolescents and alcohol consumption in Ilorin, Nigeria. Survey design was adopted. 300 respondents were randomly selected for the study, having purposively picked 10 secondary schools. One hypothesis was tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that gender has no significant relationship on school-going adolescents' consumption of alcohol. The study concluded that adolescents of school-going ages indulge in alcohol consumption equally irrespective of gender. It was recommended that promulgation of effective laws that could restrict sales and consumption of alcoholic drinks to youths of school-going ages would be an effective strategy for reducing school-going adolescents' heavy alcohol consumption in Ilorin, Nigeria

Substance Abuse among Adolescents: 1. Prevalence and Patterns of Alcohol Use in Benue State, Nigeria

The misuse of alcohol has major public health consequences and its high prevalence calls for concern especially in the hands of adolescents. This study sought to determine the prevalence and patterns of alcohol use among Junior Secondary School Students in Benue State of Nigeria.A stratified random (multistage) sampling was applied involving 12 junior secondary schools and a total of 1200 students. Data was collected with an anonymous self administered questionnaire adapted from the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) and analysed with SPSS version 17.0.Majority of respondents are Males (57.7%), Christians (94.2%) and fall within age group 10-20 years (92%). Prevalence rate was 21%; initiation age was 10-17 yrs (62.2%) with more male drinkers (89.2%); the most preferred drink is beer (79.3%) and major source are friends (56.8%).Summarily, the prevalence of alcohol use among Junior Secondary School students in Benue State is low but most users begin at a very early age which is of concern.There is a need to intervene to curtail this trend and to further explore the contextual situations surrounding alcohol use among these adolescents.

Prevalence of alcohol consumption among secondary school students in Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria

Background: Consumption of alcohol by secondary school students is a major public health concern globally, but its prevalence is not known in secondary schools in Port Harcourt. Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with alcohol use among secondary school students in Port Harcourt. Methods: This was a cross sectional school based study conducted in Port Harcourt in March 2014. A 20 itemed structured, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 1080 senior secondary 1 to 3 students from 10 public secondary schools selected through Multistage Sampling technique. Questions asked covered drinking of alcohol, frequency of drinking and being drunk in the past 30 days before the survey. Other behaviours sought were smoking of cigarette, use of cocaine and going out in the evening for fun. Sociodemographic was also sought. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: 1080 students participated in the study, mean age 16.09±6SD and male to female ratio of 0.9: 1. Prevalence of current drinking of alcohol was 30.6% and 38.1% of current drinkers were also drunk in the past 30 days, with 17.2 % being very frequently drunk. The behaviour which showed a strong association with drinking of alcohol, being drunk and the frequency of being drunk was going out in the evening for fun and recreation. Gender showed a positive association with drinking of alcohol, as more males drank alcohol with in the past 30 days compared to the females (p=0.000). Smoking of cigarette in the past 30 days and truancy were positively associated with being drunk, while academic grades showed an inverse relationship with consumption of alcohol. Majority of those who drank alcohol (42.6%) were experimenting with alcohol, though 5.4% drank due to addiction. Majority (39.3%) bought their drinks from stores and supermarkets. The most Common problems experienced by the drinkers were fatigue, alcohol made them behave in ways they later regretted and it hurt their relationships. Conclusion: Alcoholism is a serious problem with secondary school students in Port Harcourt. It is linked with truancy, poor academic achievement and other substances use. The most serious health and social problem experienced by the drinkers is addiction.
