Shape Optimization of an Electric Motor Subject to Nonlinear Magnetostatics
SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 2015
The goal of this paper is to improve the performance of an electric motor by modifying the geometry of a specific part of the iron core of its rotor. To be more precise, the objective is to smooth the rotation pattern of the rotor. A shape optimization problem is formulated by introducing a tracking-type cost functional to match a desired rotation pattern. The magnetic field generated by permanent magnets is modeled by a nonlinear partial differential equation of magnetostatics. The shape sensitivity analysis is rigorously performed for the nonlinear problem by means of a new shape-Lagrangian formulation adapted to nonlinear problems.
Design Sensitivity Analysis for Shape Optimization of Nonlinear Magnetostatic Systems
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2016
In this paper the shape optimization problem for an inelastic case by the hybrid utilization of the BEM and design sensitivity analysis is examined. Gourevich's model for describing the inelastic behaviour of the solid is used. As a numerical example, the problem for determining the optimal shape of the free boundary of a hole in a rectangular elastic and inelastic metal plate unaxial tension is solved.

The shape optimization of magnetic devices is efficiently performed with field calculation and sensitivity analysis based on the finite element method. Several sequential unconstrained optimization techniques are discussed and evaluated with respect to their application in engineering design. The optimization of the geometry of a salient pole generator so as to achieve a desired field configuration in the airgap is used as an illustrative numerical example to demonstrate the geometric parametrization technique, emphasize the importance of constraints in engineering design, and highlight the advantageous features of the augmented Lagrangian multiplier method for nonlinear constrained optimization. For the required geometric parametrization a recent novel use of structural mapping is extended to incorporate constrained optimization. For the benefit of the electrical engineering readership, the associated equations of structural mapping are presented.
Optimal Design of Nonlinear Magnetic Systems Using Finite Elements
2004
An inverse finite element method was developed to find optimal geometric parameters of a magnetic device to approximate a desired magnetic flux density distribution at certain test points and directions selected in the device. The augmented Lagrange multipliers method was utilized to transform the constrained problem consisting of a least-square objective function and a set of constraint equations to the unconstrained problem. A second-order approach based on the Lagrange-Newton method was used to minimize the unconstrained problem to improve the design iteratively. Numerical calculation of derivatives in the second-order design sensitivity analysis becomes a difficult task if saturation in material properties is accounted. A novel approach is developed to minimize the computational effort by directly combining the optimization process with the nonlinear finite element equations. The best capabilities to parametrize the device geometry and to model the nonlinear material characteris...

A new shape design sensitivity formula for magnetostatic problems is derived analytically employing the material derivative concept in continuum mechanics. In order to express the design sensitivity as a function of shape variation only, the adjoint variable is defined. Since the formula is expressed as boundary integration of state and adjoint variables over deformed boundary, the boundary element method is employed to evaluate the variables accurately on the boundary. The proposed algorithm is applied to the pole-shape optimization of a quadrupole magnet through which the validity is proved.
Rotor head shape optimization in a salient pole synchronous machine
International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, 2021
The purpose of this paper is to optimize the topology of the rotor head in a Salient Pole Synchronous Generator to maximize the magnetic flux in the stator yoke and in the air gap. The generator is modelled using FE method, and the ON-OFF method is used to manage the optimization domain. Genetic Algorithm is used to find the optimal solution for the problem. The resulting topology and convergence graphs are also presented, and the results are discussed.

An ellipsoid algorithm for the optimum design of magnetostatic problems
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1992
A bs 1 ra c t : An ellipsoid algorithm for solving nonlinear programming problems is described, whose objective and constraints functions are convex and are not assumed to be differentiable. The original ellipsoid algorithm was suggested by ludin and Nemirovskii and used by Shor for solving convex nonlinear programming problems. This paper suggests some modifications to the basic ellipsoid algorithm to adapt it to magnetostatic applications. One way to do this is to control the new ellipsoid at each iteration to generate smaller ellipsoids and to speedup the basic algorithm. Finally, illustrative examples show the applicability of the method to solving constrained nonlinear optimization problems in magnetostatic.
Global optimization for discrete magnetostatic problems
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1992
In this paper the problem of global optimization o f magnetic structures composed of solenoids is faced, using a modified Simulated Annealing algorithm able to deal with the functions of continuous andlor discrete variables. The algorithm is tested using a discrete problem which allows determination of the cost function for every possible configuration of the system, providing information about the pattern of the cost function with respect to design variables. Despite the difficulty of minimizing the function, the proposed algorithm was able to locate the global minimum, or a point where the cost function has a value very close to it, seven times out of a total of ten runs. The algorithm used is described and results are presented and discussed.
