The Importance of Cybersecurity Education in School

Despite the fact that the Internet has positively impacted people's lives, there are negative issues emerged related to the use of Internet. Cases like cyber-bully, online fraud, racial abuse, pornography and gambling had increased tremendously due to the lack of awareness and self-mechanism among Internet users to protect themselves from being victims to these acts. However, past research revealed that the level of awareness among Internet users is still low or moderate. One of the vital measures to be taken is to cultivate knowledge and awareness among Internet users from their early age, i.e., young children. Young children specifically, need to be educated to operate in a safe manner in cyberspace and to protect themselves in the process. The objective of this systematic review paper is to explore why it is so critical that modern learners are educated about the risks associated with being active in cyberspace and the strategies that stakeholders can use to promote cyber security education in schools. In this paper, few strategies are discussed as how cyber security education can be implemented in schools.

Though with the emergence of Internet that certainly has positively impacted people's lives, as so many of us use social media on internet as a platform for self-expression, to incite discussions, or to become known, but there are negative issues too that have arisen related to its use. Cases like cyberbully, online fraud, racial abuse, pornography and gambling have increased tremendously due to the lack of awareness among Internet users that many end up being victims to these acts. Sometimes people want to be the primary source of information, of sharing a topic, that they overlook the fact stating authentication to the shared information. Today usage of the internet is not just limited to adults, but in this era of technology and multimedia, knowledge of cybersecurity is also important for children. Still, the level of awareness among Internet users is quite low or moderate. Therefore, if proper measures are taken to cultivate knowledge and awareness among Internet users from their early age, i.e., young children, this issue of cyber safety can be understood in a better way. Since now with covid 19 online education has become the new trend, young children specially need to be educated to operate in a safe manner in cyberspace and to protect themselves in the process. The aim of this paper is to sightsee why cyber safety education is so critical for modern learners and how they can understand the risks associated with being active in cyberspace, to have knowledge and understanding about the strategies that stakeholders can use to promote cyber security education in schools. In this paper, few strategies are discussed as how cyber security education can be implemented in schools.

Cybersecurity depends heavily on education. The paper addresses the support of education as the smartest investment in cybersecurity. To define priorities, an early estimate of the state of cybersecurity in Moldova by an online survey has been completed. A wide range of aspects related to cybersecurity education are elucidated within three basic periods: initial (school), transit (university) and reinforcement (implementation and use at workplace). Three Reasons for Improving Cybersecurity Instruction and Practice in Schools

Information security, or cybersecurity, has become a critical field for modern society. While they may not seem it, schools are a critical battleground for these cybersecurity issues. On the business side, schools maintain sensitive records about students and parents that would be a treasure trove for identity thieves. In their classrooms, high-speed Internet connections and the adoption of 1-to-1 computing and the Internet of Things make school networks an appealing target for hackers looking to build botnets. Cybersecurity training becomes year after year more critical: as digitalization spreads in all spheres of civic, professional and social life, threats are both more insistent-as in so-called 'president extortions'-and more diffuse-as in ransomware. It is therefore urgent to focus training efforts on a general audience, on the one hand, and various trades, on the other hand, on actual risks bound with cybersecurity. We will present several examples of cybersecurity training covering this news stakes, as well as associated pedagogies: MOOCs, cyber-training platforms, lab session for administration of cybersecurity in industrial contexts, audit projects. The evolution of threats Cybersecurity training becomes year after year more critical: as digitalization spreads in all spheres of civic, professional and social life, threats are both more insistent-as in so-called 'president extortions'-and more diffuse-as in ransomware. The four categories of threats organisations currently face are the named financial extortion, site destruction, web site abuses and, officially since the BSI annual report for 2015 [BSI2015], physical site destruction. Site destruction has come to the centre of awareness since 9/11 on the one hand, and Katrina Hurricane, on the other. These two dramatic events initiated an area of massive Business recovery and continuity planning. Massive web site abuses have come to light after the low technology but quantitatively impressive attacks following terrorist attacks of January 2015 known as OpFrance: more than 20000 web sites have been reportedly been corrupted. Destruction of physical sites is a reality for civilian infrastructures since the burning of a foundry in Germany, even though it was already reported in diplomatic or military conflicts beforehand , as the Stuxnet case leading to destruction of centrifuge machines in Iran in 2010, or the explosion of a pipeline in Turkey in 2009. For all these reasons, the traditional approach to Cybersecurity teaching focusing on cryptography and network security urgently needs to be complemented by a new portfolio of cybersecurity trainings: cryptographic tools are nowadays available to the broad public and more than 70% of vulnerabilities are discovered at the application level. Training efforts now need to be strengthened on actual risks bound with cybersecurity. IT professionals must be trained to master the security issues of the tools they are implementing and deploying: software projects, liabilities and best practices in the health, bank, industry domains, as well as operational execution of security audits supporting day after day an improvement of cyber health of organisations and enterprises. Cybersecurity trainings should from now on encompass the full stack of security requirements of our organisations: sensibilization, web applications security, IoT security, risk analysis with a specific focus on connected physical infrastructures, and training for security audits. Sensibilization programs need to be target both at a broad audience, but also at top management and accounting teams who are regular targets for social engineering attacks [Puhakainen2010]. Programs are to be very specific to their target audience: Actual and perceived threats as well as efficient reactions may differ from continent to continents. Increased exposure to technologies has lately emerged as one of the everyday realities of digital natives, especially K-12 students, and teachers, the digital immigrants. Protection from cybersecurity risks in digital learning spaces is a human right, but students are increasingly exposed to high-risk cyberspace without time to cope with cybersecurity risks. This study, using a survey (N-891 students and 157 teachers) and in-depth interviews (27 students and 14 teachers), described the students' cybersecurity related experiences and challenges in Nepal. This study revealed that the school’s cybersecurity support system is poor and teachers has very low awareness and competencies to protect students from cybersecurity-related challenges. To create a safe cyberspace for learners, it is urgent to enhance the cybersecurity awareness and skills of teachers, as the existing infrastructure is weak and there is a significant gap related to the cybersecurity awareness between students and teachers. Poor cybersecurity is one of the significant barriers to the quality of education in Nepal. In the age of information and technology, effective collaboration among parents, teachers, and students, the multi generational learners, is the prerequisite for ensuring children's rights to learn in all settings including cyberspace.
Education Versus Cyber Challenges
With the help of advanced technologies we want to have as much comfort as possible, but the advantages come with a series of rules that we must follow. It is not necessary to become specialists, but it is certainly necessary to keep ourselves informed about the dangers to which we are exposed. Otherwise, the price paid due to ignorance or superficiality may far exceed the darkest expectations. We can be a direct target, a collateral victim, or a valuable tool of malicious access in a certain context speculated or created by a hostile actor. It largely depends on us which position we choose. The impact can also be reflected in the direction of national security.
Cyber crime is emerging as serious threat. To the world of computer technology, governments, police and intelligence units are acting toward the issue closely. Different strategies are put into action. The effort is done to educate people and to expose them to the idea that it is not safe anymore to navigate in the cyber world without security. Varna Free University has a tradition in teaching cyber security through bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and LLL (Lifelong Learning) courses for school teachers and students. The latest Cyberwizards project stems from the need to teach teachers and students how to protect themselves online, how to manage their digital identity, what types of information to publish. The university project aims to develop training courses and research methodologies to develop effective and sustainable cyber learning solutions aimed at digital protection and security.

The paper discusses the possible impact of digital space on a human, as well as human-related directions in cyber-security analysis in the education: levels of cyber-security, social engineering role in cyber-security of education, "cognitive vaccination".
