The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism: Entrepreneurship of the Norwegian Puritan Leader Hans Nielsen Hauge

The present paper deals with Max Webers hypothesis on the linkage between protestant ethics and the development of capitalism and entreprenaurship. It does so by study industrial entrepreneurship the great Norwegian puritan pioneer and leader Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824) was engaged in. Specificially, the paper seeks to map his involvement in starting or restarting businesses and to quantify the volumes of financial activities he was engaged in. The paper concludes that the industrial activities initiated by Hauge was of a substantial size to the Norwegian economy in the 19th century.

Puritan Motivation for Serial Entrepreneurship: The Haugean Example

It is well known that protestant and puritan environments historically have fostered entrepreneurs. This paper looks at serial entrepreneurship which took place in Norway in the 19 th century in networks led by the puritan leader Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824) and his followers. The paper seeks to give an overview of their entrepreneurship and discusses their motivation behind their actions. It concludes they were heavily engaged in serial entrepreneurship, not only within business, but also concerning, politics, welfare and education and that there was a clear religious motivation for their activities.

Generational links between entrepreneurship, management and puritanism

Problems and Perspectives in Management

This paper deals with relationships between puritanism, management and entrepreneurship. As this is an on-going debate among economic historians, it focuses on the period from the early 1800s until present times, where Norwegian high profile puritan entrepreneurship serves as the case. The theoretical framework is that entrepreneurship is seen as an important liaison factor representing multifactor productivity in a Solow growth model. The paper provides new insight within different areas on the basis of utilization of available sources. Firstly, it gives new estimates of the entrepreneurship of the puritan leader, Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771–1824). Secondly, it organizes his followers in three generations. The first is those who directly took up his heritage, i.e. Haugeans. Their heydays lasted until the middle of the 19th century. The second generation is characterized as Haugean descendants.
