Terrorism as destructive behavior

Proceedings of Azerbaijan international scientific research congress. , 2022

In the 21st century, it is necessary to study terrorism on a psychological basis, which has become a global process and creates the impression of an irresistible political manifestation. Terrorism is often used as a form of destructive behavior in political struggles and social conflicts, in one way or another between people. The main purpose of terrorism is primarily to affect people psychologically, to keep them in fear and anxiety. These psychological conditions affect people’s hopes for the future, their behavior, their attitude to political power, and in many cases are reflected in social and political processes. Thus, the fear of terrorism leads to the spread of distorted information among people, creating panic, mistrust and psychological stagnation in society. Terrorist behavior is a form of destructive behavior that is clear and explicit. According to the general assessment, such behavior is more or less abnormal and includes a number of pathological components. This is not simply to prove that the terrorist is “crazy” in an extremely easy way, which is unproductive and inaccurate. It is more accurate to call a terrorist personality accentuated. This means that a terrorist is a normal person, both psychologically and clinically. However, certain character traits and personality traits were accentuated in him.

The psychodynamics of terrorism

Drawing on notions from comparative religion, and also Freud's discussion of the death drive, light is shed on the psychodynamic principles behind terrorism, and the bottomless evil of mankind, in general. Terrorism is not foremostly a political problem, or a problem deriving from poverty. Nor is it an evil that springs from unshackled instinctual forces. Terrorism, and the even greater problem of bullying and victimization of our peers, has its roots in an archaic psychic economy of sin transference. Following St Paul, people can be vaccinated against this evil, by forsaking ideological grandiose ideals; by giving up the search for the perfect, blissful, condition of outer life, and instead learn that 'the kingdom is within.' Keywords: psychology of terrorism, theocracy, human sacrifice, transfer of sin, Khidr, The Green Man, St Paul, death drive, genocide.

La Psychologie du Terrorisme

Despite the extraordinary social and political consequences often associated with terrorist violence, as well as our responses to it, psychological research on terrorist behavior is conspicuously underdeveloped. This special issue of American Psychologist presents a series of articles that showcase new conceptual, theoretical and empirical advances in our understanding of terrorism. In doing so, it seeks to not merely summarize recent accomplishments but to highlight the immense value of explicitly psychological research on these issues, far more of which is called for to realize the potential for informing solutions.

THE PERSONALITY PROFILE OF TERRORIST LEADERS: THEORETCAL ASPECTS AND WAYS OF MEASURING

Proceedings of International Scientific Conference, RESEARCHING SECURITY - APPROACHES, CONCEPTS AND POLICIES, 2015

The main task of the psychology of terrorism is to explain the psychological aspects of terrorism, trying to provide answers about the behavior of the persons involved in terrorist activities. The literature suggests that there is no a single theory that explains the reasons and the way of "making the terrorists." While the first generation of research have viewed on terrorism as a pathology, explaining it predominantly through mental illness and psychopathic personality, the second generation is based on a behavioral approach that sets operationalization as a precondition for existing of scientific research. It achieved agreement for the inability of separation of the psychological factors from the others, especially the social, in an attempt to explain this phenomenon. It is not found a single psychological profile of terrorist, but what unites this sample is the existence of vulnerability for terrorism and particular ideology. However, the deepest in this phenomenon is the word "psychology", which unfortunately still remains undiscovered. Even more complicated is the attempt to describe those who are ahead to be chosen to lead this psychology. While some theoretical approaches exist, there are very few empirical studies about detection of the psychological aspects of terrorism, especially in the case of personality traits. Basically, these studies came to unclear conclusions, first due to the lack of unique definition of terrorism as phenomena, classified research results, and then due to unavailability of testing subjects, especially in case of an unknown enemy. On the other hand, recent methodological approaches are facing with uncertain validity.

The need for an integrative theoretical model to determine the personality of terrorists

Journal of Scientific Papers “Social Development and Security”, 2021

Terrorism is a threat to the whole of humanity, counterterrorism is a collective responsibility which requires extreme levels of cooperation and coordination between nations to reduce terrorism and terrorist behavior, in this regard, several international laws, decisions and agreements have been formulated or signed to tackle the problem. In recent years terrorism has become a real challenge for many countries of the world and for all humanity, because terrorism and aggressive behavior of terrorists, annihilated a lot of people, destroyed the infrastructure and economic structure of the group of nations of the world. The thought and extremist ideology of some groups making human in the circle of fear, constant anxiety, and affected the progress of nations in all sides of human life, also affected the human development, and the open humanitarian ideas. Counter-terrorism has become an international issue, and study about it is important that should take into consideration the theoretical and practical aspects. However, with the lack of internationally accepted definition and theories about terrorism as a phenomenon, perhaps it is not surprising that there is a similar shortage of theories on how to combat it. Moreover, the increasing complexity and the wider threat of the phenomenon of terrorism and extremism, with the influx of actors and a range of motivations, strategies, tactics, and evaluation tools are available on how to confront such threats are necessary in guiding the process of policymaking to combat terrorism. This article aimed to claim the necessity of forming a theoretical model to determine the personality traits of the terrorist and distinguish them from the pathological personality. (Mental illness). According to some hypotheses and theories of the personality of terrorists and a comparison between the two personalities: "terrorist and abnormal personality" with a number of studies that dealt with them, thus, there is a need for a theoretical model to determine the traits of the personality of terrorists.

The Psychology of the Terrorist

Journal of Trauma Practice, 2002

In this paper, I propose to examine some of the basic issues involved in terrorist behaviour. In order to achieve this aim, I want to set about answering five basic questions. Firstly, are terrorists mad? That is, are they suffering from a clinically diagnosable condition? Secondly, if they are not mad, then how can we understand the terrorist mind more fully? Thirdly, how can the psychologist's understanding of the terrorist mind help us to learn to manage terrorism more effectively? Fourthly, how can we identify trends in terrorist behaviour in order to be more effectively prepared, and fifthly, how can we move towards reducing and eventually eradicating terrorist activity in general terms?

(Cosmic) War on Terror: Psychological Perspectives on Terrorism

2012

The purpose of our research is to elaborate and understand the causes of terrorism. In a global international arenaa central conflict existsbetween the West (U.S.) and the East (Arab World). It is necessary to analyze the issue of terrorism within this context of conflict betweenthe West vs. East.Samuel Huntington’s famous thesis, Clash of Civilizations, defines the basis and preconditions of terrorism. It is within this context thatwe discuss the topic of terrorism.Equally important is providing basic information about the history of terrorism, its origins, and identifying the motives, psychologicalcircumstances, and environmental conditions. This provides the framework to understand how terrorists’ strategies are formulated. We examine the term “War on Terror” and its logical consequences; the perception of the other party (of conflict) and try to define religiousunderpinnings of the conflict and the psychological makeup of a terrorist organization.
