Managerial stress and strain in a mining organization
Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1977
Measures of job stress and strain were obtained from 95 management level employees in an underground mine. In addition, 13 potential moderators of stress-strain relations were assessed. Findings indicated that such stresses as under-utilization of skills, job insecurity, role conflict and ambiguity, variation in work load. and lack of participation had moderate to high relationships with the psychological strains of anxiety-irritation-depression, psychosomatic symptoms, and job dissatisfaction. However, none of the moderators, which included measures of Type A personality, flexibility, need for social approval, social support, age, and tenure, had an appreciable effect on the stress-strain linkage. Possible explanations for the failure of the moderator approach, along with comparisons to other investigations, were offered in conclusion.

Psychosocial working conditions are well-known determinants of poor mental health. However, studies in mining populations where employment and working conditions are frequently precarious have, to our knowledge, only focused on occupational accidents and diseases. The aim of this study was to assess psychosocial working conditions and psychological distress in Andean underground miners. The study population consisted of 153 Bolivian miners working in a silver mining cooperative, 137 Chilean informal gold miners, and 200 formal Peruvian silver miners employed in a remote setting. High work demands, minimal work control, minimal social support at work, and workplace exposure to violence and bullying were assessed using the Spanish short form of the European Working Condition Survey. A general health questionnaire score >4 was used as cutoff for psychological distress. Associations between psychosocial work environment and psychological distress were tested using logistic regression...

The roster work system, which has day and night working hours for mine workers, can cause occupational stress. This study aims to examine the quality of working life and occupational stress. This is an observational research with cross sectional design. The samples were 107 workers based on probability by using simple random technique. The data instrument was a Likert scale, while the data analysis was used Pearson and linear regression. The average working life quality score was 61,71 covering aspects of job restructuring, reward system, labor force participation and occupational environment. The average occupational stress score was 55,48 which included biological stress, psychological stress and social stress. The test results show the effect (p = 0.012) with a correlation of-0,245 that the quality of work life is good, so occupational stress will decrease. It is expected that the work system of preventive assessment of worker health will be improved so that work productivity can be high.
With the mine in the veins: emotional adjustments in female partners of Chilean mining workers
Gender, Place & Culture, 2016
This research analyzes emotional adjustments and imbalances experienced by female partners of Chilean mining workers, resulting from interacting demands of work, intimacy, family, and handling money, as well as tensions caused by miners' prolonged absences and dissimilar schedules, negatively impacting family encounters. The research is circumscribed in northern Chile, in the Region of Antofagasta, epicenter of worldwide copper mining. Through a qualitative design, 36 in-depth interviews were held and a sociodemographic survey of mining workers' partners. Among the findings are power conflicts derived from the role that workers and female partners have as a couple, in managing money and in emotional aspects, exacerbated by gender constructions of 'the paid miner' and 'female partner'. Female partners express their challenges in managing the family's economic resources as well as emotional aspects between the partners.

The objective of this study was to increase the knowledge of social and labor stressors that make up one of the main causes of occupational hazards. A census was conducted on the 60 workers of a tire manufacturing company. The study was descriptive, transversal and analytical. The presence of psychosocial factors was expressed by 49.1% of operational workers, the prevalence of stress symptoms in 36.4%. In the results of the relationship between psychosocial factors with the symptoms of stress and being sick, the two highest significant correspondences are observed in “Labor requirements” and “Job role and career development” with being sick, both with a p = 0.007.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of learned resourcefulness and the dimensions of perceived social support on work stress and whether there is a moderating role of the dimensions of perceived social support in the relationship between learned resourcefulness and work stress in hotel businesses. With this purpose, judgmental sampling method was preferred as the sampling method in this study and data were collected from the employees of four- and five-star hotels in Cappadocia through questionnaires. Data were examined with simple and multiple linear regression and hierarchical regression analyses. Based on the results of the study, a negative effect of both learned resourcefulness and the “family” dimension of perceived social support on work stress was discovered; but the effects of “friend” and “significant other” dimensions on work stress were insignificant. In addition, another result was that the “family” dimension of perceived social support played a moderatin...

Organizational ergonomics of occupational health methods and processes in a Brazilian oil refinery
Work: A Journal of …, 2012
Organizational ergonomics refers to the optimization of social technical systems, including their organizational structures, policies and processes. The relevant topics include communications, management of resources, work projects, temporal organization of work, team work, participative project, new work paradigms, cooperative work, organizational culture, network organizations and quality management (IEA, 2000). The purpose of this study was the reorganization of the methods and processes of the occupational health sector (SMS/SO-Portuguese acronym of the area) of a petrochemical company. The work involved thirty professionals: a coordinator, two occupational physicians, one cardiologist, one occupational dentist, two occupational nurses, eleven occupational health technicians, one social worker, one nutritionist, one phonoaudiologist, one ophthalmologist, one biochemist, two ergonomists, three administrative assistants, one administrator and one psychologist, during a six-month period. The methodology that was used sought to establish a cooperative alliance focused on change, transformation and acquisition of skills, reflecting directly on the attitudes and performance of the leaderships and their work teams. In addition to the feedback practice, the following supporting tools were used for the study's success: "Functional Polyvalence Matrix", "Management of Failures", 5W2H", "6M", "5 Why" and "process mapping". The intended results after the organization ergonomics restructuring process will allow the leader to help his or her team to make a diagnosis of the problems, identify options, develop strategies, establish targets and action plans, remove barriers, review contexts and implement the business management fundaments: planning, organization, management, coordination and control. The transformation possibilities allow us to consider some hypothesis: Before: Focus only on results. After: Engage collaborators to create sustainable results. Before: Operating profile. After: Tactical/strategic profile. Before: Find errors. After: Value effort and development. Before: Listen to what is being said. After: Understand what is being said. Before: Create fears of the consequences. After: Create room for risk. Before: Be the one who approves and decides. After: Be the cooperative support.
