Discourse and Rhetoric: A Study of Pakistani English Newspapers' Editorials, 2018
This particular study aims at exploring the use of rhetorical devices from the editorials of Pakistani English newspapers. For this purpose, data was collected from three Pakistani English newspapers The News, Dawn, and The Nation. Using purposive sampling technique, 36 editorials were selected; 12 editorials from each newspaper, which were published on the coverage of Panama Leaks from April 2016 to December 2016. In order to find out the answers of research questions, mixed method approach was applied. Findings revealed that the editorial writers have employed eight rhetorical devices namely Parallelism, Antithesis, Simile, Metonymy, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Neologism and Rhetorical question commonly in their individual discourse to persuade the readers, while Oxymoron and Allusion were rarely used. Results of Chi-Square revealed statistically significant frequency differences in the use of rhetorical devices. The total frequency of Rhetorical devices was found higher in Dawn as compared to The News and The Nation. Metonymy was found most frequently used rhetorical device in three newspapers. Hyperbole was second and rhetorical question was third frequently used rhetorical device in three newspapers. From the perspective of pedagogy, the results of current study can provide English foreign language teachers and students with the knowledge about the use of rhetoric in the genre of newspapers' editorials. Therefore, editorials can be used as a source for writing persuasive and argumentative essays. This study would be helpful for general masses to make them aware that how the use of rhetoric in newspaper's discourse manipulate them according to the desired ideologies of Newspapers. This Research would also be valuable for the future researchers, especially for those who are interested in exploring the newspaper discourse, with particular focus on the genre of Editorial, as they can further explore the use of rhetoric in comparison to foreign newspapers' editorials.
A critical discourse analysis of headlines in online news portals

This study aimed to determine the discursive devices used in the news headlines, unravel the ideologies of the media practitioners, and reveal the insights that can be generated from the indings. Thirty headlines were gathered from ive major online news portals in the Philippines: ABS-CBN, CNN Philippines, GMA, Interaksyon, and Rappler. This is a qualitative study that is seen from Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in 1995. Results showed ten discursive devices used in the headlines by media practitioners to attract attention from readers that may direct them to read the headline and read the entire article. It was also found out that the devices brought out media practitioners' ideologies. It was further found that writers or editors were objective or neutral, subjective or biased, and misleading. The selection of the words used in the headlines showed the political dispositions of the news practitioners who intentionally choose only those speeches or news that may create sensational feelings among the readers. The writer or editor's judgment angle re lected how he or she wanted the readers to perceive the issue. Furthermore, the results of this study may provide ideas to news consumers to not just read the headlines but read the entire article so that they may know if the headline matches its content and that they may be able to identify if the issue is true or not if it is slanted or sensationalized.
Headlines in Newspaper Editorials: A Contrastive Study

Newspaper editorials constitute a part of media discourse, which is an extremely important field of research in intercultural rhetoric analysis and EFL (English as a foreign language)/ESL (English as a second language) studies. Specifically, certain features of editorial headlines and also their important role in monitoring and directing readers' attention have made the interface between the linguistic analysis of newspaper editorial headlines and teaching of EFL as a relevant issue in language teaching. Through conducting a contrastive textual analysis of selected headlines, culled from the editorials of the English newspaper, The New York Times, and those of Persian newspaper, Tehran Times, the present study aimed at exploring the kind of textual and rhetorical strategies the two newspapers used for propagating their preferred ideologies. The results of the study indicated that headlines in the two papers presented a subjective attitude of the writers (newspapers) toward the topic. However, based on the analysis of the data, it became clear that there were certain differences between the two sets of headlines in terms of Presupposition, and certain Rhetorical devices.

Nowadays mass media plays a crucial role in people’s lives. Online newspapers constitute a part of media discourse, which makes for extremely important bodies of text for the purposes of research in discourse analysis. In news headlines, careful and sensitive use is made of linguistic devices in order to make the headlines unique and different, influence the readers, create trust for the newspaper, and, most importantly, invite and encourage the reader to proceed to the whole story and the main body of the report/news report. In this spirit, this study is a linguistic analysis of headlines in the political section of established online American newspapers. The data for this study comprises 50 headlines collected from 5 online newspapers revolving around the theme of Donald Trump. The study of stylistics is employed since this research investigates language and style which can be seen in figurative language through figures of speech in the objects of study. Contrastive rhetorical analysis as a way of understanding different ways through which writers from various cultural backgrounds shape their discourse was officially initiated by the works of Kaplan (1966). This study tries to use the methodology to investigate the news reports in two American and Iranian widely published newspapers. Using the analytical methodologies of contrastive rhetoric and genre analysis, 10 news reports written by Iranian and American journalist were selected and analyzed. Results revealed that though the genre written by both groups of writers followed the same generic or rhetorical organizational structure, the strategies writers from the two different socio-cultural environments took to realize the moves in the genres were different.
Figures of Speech on Political Headline: Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) Newspaper

This study dealt with figures of speech in political headline: Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) Newspaper. This research used a qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It was conducted descriptively. Figures of speech is a departure from the usual form of expression for the purpose of making the meaning clearer, more forceful, or more beautiful. The objective of the study was to investigate the types of figures of speech in political headline: Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) Newspaper. The data were utterances and word of political headline and source of data taken from online newspaper. The result of the data showed that there were five types of twelve of figures of speech in Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) Newspaper. In Waspada there were four types of figures of speech namely personification, symbol, paradox, and irony. Meanwhile, in Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) there were three types of figures of speech namely personification, apostrophe, and symbol. The findings showed that symbol was the most frequently used figures of speech in both newspapers. The figures of speech used in all situations that show expression in which the name of an attribute or based on the ideology each the both newspapers are different so it could be concluded that the figures of speech in both newspapers adopted the similar style of language and way of approaching the issues politic by making use of figures of speech.
