Abstract: The paper considers the significance of Design Theory in Measurement Science. It presents a modern view of design as a knowledge acquisition and transformation process. A brief outline of the classical model of design is provided. A model of the design process as a knowledge transformation process, based on a board architecture is proposed. A view of design concepts as models, and of design concept generation and transformation as a problem solving process, is presented.
Evaluation in Design-Oriented Research

Design has been recognized for a long time both as art and as science. In the sixties of the previous century design-oriented research began to draw the attention of scientific researchers and methodologists, not only in technical engineering but also in the social sciences. However, a rather limited methodology for design-oriented research has been developed, especially as to the social sciences. In this article we introduce evaluation methodology and research methodology as a systematic input in the process of designing. A designing cycle is formulated with six stages, and for each of these stages operations, guidelines and criteria for evaluation are defined. All this may be used for a considerable improvement of the process and product of designing.
The Development of an Evaluation Framework Based on Design Science

This paper is part of an on going research work focusing on the development and evaluation of a visual management method, known as LCM 4 , using design science research. LCM is a visual management method, developed initially by the researcher in 2007 in practice to address a practical problem faced on a construction site. This practical problem was a lack of transparency in daily operations onsite, which led to difficulties in communication, decision-making and general progress in daily work (Brady, et al 2012). LCM also addresses a theoretical problem which is the lack of broader, holistic solutions when implementing Lean and Visual Management (Picchi, 2004, Tezel, 2011). By applying various visual tools together in a unique way, a structure is provided to visually plan and manage the construction process, bringing clarity, aiding communication and collaboration, decision-making and simplifying information. LCM's main aims are to improve transparency in the overall construction process, implement a visualised flow and a pull system in the daily planning of work onsite and to provide a mechanism for regular quality checks and continuous improvement. Part of the evaluation will be to compare LCM to other planning and control systems such as Last Planner in order to clarify the similarities and differences and also its contribution to knowledge. The overall aim of the paper is to describe and present the development of a suitable framework which is used to evaluate this method within the context of Design Science. Findings from an analysis on the method are presented which specifies its outcomes according to this methodology. Evaluation criteria that make up the framework are identified based on the Design Science literature and the aims of the LCM method itself and are applied in a focused way to the constructs, models, methods and instantiations of LCM.
Empirical and theoretical studies of design judgement: a review

This paper presents a review of some observation-based studies of the design activity and attempts two kinds of analysis of them. The first is to show some patterns of desiqner behaviour which appear to be common to most of the studies. The second is to show how observed behaviour is related to theoretical work on design. In particular the importance of judgement and evaluation in design is stressed. Using the framework of decision making and value theory, a tentative synthesis, compatible with both empirical and theoretical design studies, is proposed.

Este artigo pondera acerca da interpretação como método e da apropriação da hermenêutica como metodologia projetual capaz de explicar o processo do design. Neste estudo é proposta uma abordagem de fundamentação arqueológica (Foucault, 1966) acerca do fenómeno da linguagem como entidade portadora de significado. O design parte do relacionamento entre sujeito e contexto, do tempo, da mudança e da advertência como factores estratégicos para operar. O texto releva a hipótese do ciclo hermenêutico como alternativa às metodologias clássicas.

Landscapes of calculation: the design agency of methods of assessment at the Ayalon project

Assessment techniques such as cost-benefit analysis are used to evaluate and approve public sector projects and decide among different design alternatives. Therefore, they have a considerable influence on the materiality, performance and reception of infrastructural landscapes. This paper analyses the dynamic interaction of assessment techniques with other forces and modes of knowledge that produce the built environment using the historic case study of the Ayalon Project in Israel. The project transformed a seasonal river into a depressed urban expressway, railroad, and flood control facility. The research opens the 'black box' of cost-benefit, multiple-criteria and risk analysis to reconstruct the complex chain of decisions that shaped the regulation canal, whose periodic flooding is regarded as a national scandal. Its main conclusion is that the recursive activation of these portable techniques contributed to the Ayalon's unstable performance and landscape singularity.
