Performance indicators and their importance for effective short-term and operational mine planning
REM - International Engineering Journal, 2023
Mining in Brazil is one of the pillars that support its GDP (gross domestic product). Its execution requires technique and expertise. In a mining venture, the value chain drives the business to achieve its goals. Mine planning has a great influence on its performance, as it is through it that the organization is based to offer its products to the market and, consequently, the low compliance with the established premises will bring undesirable inconveniences. Within the planning, the short term is dedicated to operationalize the plans made possible by the long and medium term teams, in addition to attending to market variations. The indicators that control this process are of great importance, as an incorrect identification inserted in the various criteria that compose it can guide managers towards inefficient decision making. The objective of this study was, through lean methodology, to identify the main performance indicators that impact on the non-exception of the mining plan measured by the adherence and compliance indicators. In this method, the main causes of non-adherence and compliance with the mining plan were identified, enabling short and medium-term actions that leveraged the indicators. This study leveraged the average adherence and compliance by 17% and 54.9%, respectively, exceeding the target set for 6.5% and 49.2% respectively.
Challenges and opportunities for a successful mining industry in the future
BOLETÍN GEOLÓGICO Y MINERO, 2019
Modern models of sustainable economic growth are metal-intensive and will not be successful in the future unless a continuous supply of mineral-derived products is ensured. Despite this being logical, there is still a significant reluctance regarding mineral exploration and mining activities, often reflected in: (i) unfavourable public opinions; and (ii) absence of political measures or continuity of agendas that actually appreciate the way minerals are produced and the players directly or indirectly involved in this production. To succeed, the mining industry will have to (re)define its strategy and find innovative approaches to old problems and clearly demonstrate that mineral products can be efficiently delivered to support global development and assist suitable paths to welfare and quality of life, thus also providing real value to all concerned. In this study we give a concise review of the main challenges posed to the mining industry, and also indicate the most relevant opportunities and advance some proposals to constructively face the identified weaknesses and threats. The fundamental outcome is that the long-term balance between supply and demand of mineral products requires concerted actions on different fronts aiming: (i) the safeguarding of known resources; (ii) high-quality (scientifically and technologically driven) exploration surveys; (iii) improvements in mining and mineral transformation/ beneficiation; (iv) advances in consistent combinations of primary and secondary sources of raw materials, along with higher concerns on their judicious use; (v) effective and stable mining policies; and (vi) new insights on the role played by the mining industry through fruitful dialogues with society in general.
The global mining industry: corporate profile, complexity, and change
Mineral Economics
The continuation and increasing importance of mining is inevitable as society embraces both the transition to a low-carbon economy and application of circular economy concepts. However, across many parts of society, there is an ongoing sense that those who are carrying many of the costs and risks related to mining particularly over the long term (often host communities and countries) are not seeing a level of benefit that seems fair. In contrast, there is frustration within the industry that mining is not being given due credit for the importance of its role in contemporary society by those who would criticize industry practices. Over the past several decades, dozens of initiatives aimed at strengthening mining’s social and environmental performance have been mounted from both within and outside the industry. These generally depend on a “leadership-trickle-down” change model. While progress has been achieved, the society-industry trust deficit continues. The global mining community ...
Non-Technical Risks and Their Impact on the Mining Industry
Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve Estimation (2nd Edition), 2014
'Country risk', including the threat of 'resource nationalism', market-related 'commodity price risk' and corporate-level 'going concern risk' are identified as amongst the principal non-technical risk types having the greatest impact on the mining industry. 'Exchange rate risk' acts alongside commodity price risk at the corporate level where mine-related revenues are in United States dollars (US $) and the mine cost-base in a local currency. Other market-related risks comprise the various indirect price-influencing forces that drive mineral...
Why is developing a new mine so difficult
Globally there are problems in bringing new mine capacity on stream. With little new 'greenfields' exploration taking place at this time, the pipeline of high-quality mine projects is not being replenished. The problem for the mining industry is that minerals exploration takes place over long timescales, however, "success" is judged along much shorter timescales. Addressing this paradox is a challenge for all in minerals exploration management. This study has sought to address this topic by building on the author's tacit knowledge, gained through experience in the mining industry, combined with a review of the business management and strategy literature. Emergent from this research are multiple ways for examining mining industry problems and a new approach to developing high-level strategies for facilitating minerals exploration.
Influence of a Turbulent Environment on the Managing of a Mining Enterprise
CBU International Conference Proceedings
Motivation: It should be taken into consideration that classical planning methods that worked well at the end of the 20th century are often not effective in a turbulent environment. The article presents planning methods that can be applied in such conditions. Problem statement: The article presents methods of planning of the future in a variable environment. There are constant changes in the macro-environment of mining enterprises in Poland. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to create an appropriate plan for the company's core business i.e. extracting hard coal deposits. Approach and results: The scenario-based planning and SARIMA mathematical model and the forecasts for the demand for hard coal based on them have been presented. The scenarios are used to verify the potential company strategy. Conclusions: It should be noted that the strategy must be created in several variants which finally will enable the company to choose the one that will let it gain a competitive advanta...
Third International Future Mining Conference
2015
Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy workplaces. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. But future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation, as well as to optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. Therefore, a Lean Production philosophy is investigated for the organisation of future mines. The aim of this paper is to investigate to what extent Lean Production can be used to organise for attractive mining. To do so, it first need to be defined what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the production co...
