Psychological effects of an adventure therapy program in the treatment of substance use disorders. A Greek pilot study (original) (raw)

The study consists of a pilot study aimed to the evaluation of a sailing therapy program with drug users and multi-diagnosed patients. A need that practitioners working in nature-based programs in Italy are identifying as urgent is the difficulty in finding effective evaluation methods and tools. Although some validated tools specific for outdoor programs do exist, context specific tools are needed. The wider participatory research, of which this study is part and that is still in progress, has the aim to collect and/or create a wide range of possible evaluation tools and methods to be used by nature-based practitioners or to serve as an inspiration for them to create their own. In this study, a self-assessment questionnaire for adult patients, living in a drug rehabilitation center and experiencing a sailing therapy week, was created starting from three preexisting tools, which were adapted to this specific context: the first results are encouraging.
A Meta-Analysis of Adventure Therapy Outcomes and Moderators
The Open Psychology Journal, 2013
This study reports on a meta-analytic review of 197 studies of adventure therapy participant outcomes (2,908 effect sizes, 206 unique samples). The short-term effect size for adventure therapy was moderate (g = .47) and larger than for alternative (.14) and no treatment (.08) comparison groups. There was little change during the lead-up (.09) and follow-up periods (.03) for adventure therapy, indicating long-term maintenance of the short-term gains. The short-term adventure therapy outcomes were significant for seven out of the eight outcome categories, with the strongest effects for clinical and self-concept measures, and the smallest effects for spirituality/morality. The only significant moderator of outcomes was a positive relationship with participant age. There was also evidence that adventure therapy studies have reported larger effects over time since the 1960s. Publication bias analyses indicated that the study may slightly underestimate true effects. Overall, the findings provide the most robust meta-analysis of the effects of adventure therapy to date. Thus, an effect size of approximately .5 is suggested as a benchmark for adventure therapy programs, although this should be adjusted according to the age group.
The role of self-efficacy in the treatment of substance use disorders
Addictive Behaviors, 2011
Self-efficacy is the belief that one has the ability to implement the behaviors needed to produce a desired effect. There has been growing interest in the role of self-efficacy as a predictor and/or mediator of treatment outcome in a number of domains. The present paper reviews the recent literature on self-efficacy in the substance abuse field. In numerous studies of substance abuse treatment, self-efficacy has emerged as an important predictor of outcome, or as a mediator of treatment effects. Despite these repeated positive findings, the self-efficacy concept has had little impact on the design of treatments. Since the concept was first introduced, there have been numerous suggestions regarding the means by which self-efficacy may be enhanced in clinical settings, but very little by way of empirical tests of those suggestions. This review concludes with a number of recommendations for further research to improve understanding of this potentially valuable concept and its interactions with other variables, and to develop effective strategies for enhancing self-efficacy.

Conceptually, Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a pattern of human thought formed from a series of interrelated Stimulus-Cognition-Response processes, in which cognitive processes cause a person to feel and act. Since the CBT technique was carried out at LRKM Mitra Husada, specific measurements have never been carried out to see its effect on changes in the self-esteem of the clients who were given the intervention. This study aims to analyze the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy on the self-esteem of methamphetamine users at LRKM Mitra Husada, Foundation of Mitra Husada, South Sulawesi. This study used the Quasi Experiment method with the research design used being the Pretest-Posttest with Control Group Design, using two groups, namely the intervention group that was given the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Counseling treatment and the control group that was only given a brochure. The results of this study found that there was an effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) counselling interventions on the self-esteem of methamphetamine users, where the average pretest result was 1.61 and 2.67 post-test with a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05); There was no effect of giving brochures on the selfesteem of methamphetamine users, where the average pretest result was 1.78 and 1.94 posttest with a significance value of 0.257 (p> 0.05); While the results of the comparative test between the intervention group and the control group found that there was no significant difference in the effect on the control group before and after being given the brochure (p-value 0.257) but found differences in the effect on the intervention group before and after being given CBT counselling (p-value 0.000).

Improving addictions treatment outcomes by empowering self and others
International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, 2010
The present research tested the effectiveness of adding an interpersonal, interactive, experiential training programme to addictions treatment that enhances motivation, cognitivebehavioural coping skills, social support, and group cohesiveness. The research was conducted in a co-educational, long-term residential treatment facility for addictive disorders (alcohol and other substances, sexual addiction, eating disorders, compulsive shopping, and gambling) and concomitant psychiatric diagnoses. The added training is co-created by participants. They choose challenging situations important in their lives that are played out as 'movies' in which they play and experience all the parts. Motivation for change, skills to implement positive changes, self-efficacy, empathy, positive support, and group cohesiveness are rooted in their own experiences and the feedback they receive from others, as they behave in empowering and disempowering ways. The training resulted in significant increases in empowering communication, self-esteem and quality of group life in the treatment group and in the family. Many of these results have large effect sizes and are consistent with the findings from prior studies. The results obtained in this study suggest that Say It Straight training can be an effective addition to the treatment of addictions in residential treatment. Future research is needed to determine the long-term effects of this training on relapse.
