Effects of Entrepreneurial Orientation on Export Performance of Manufacturing SMEs in Kano, Nigeria
Bayero Business Review, 2021
The basic objective of this study was to assess the effects of innovativeness, risk-taking, and pro-activeness on the performance of exporting manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Kano, Nigeria. Based on a theoretical consideration a model was proposed and three hypotheses were formulated. Survey questionnaires were used in the data collection and a total of 110 useable responses were received from the owners/managers of exporting manufacturing SMEs in Kano. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed in the data analysis. The results of the analysis depict that pro-activeness; innovativeness and risk-taking have a significant effect on the export performance of manufacturing SMEs. The managerial implication of this study indicates that EO is a significant internal determinant of export performance. Exporting SME managers could take complementary advantage of pro-activeness, innovativeness, and risk-taking resources to perform more than their competitors. The study recommends leveraging renewal strategy on incentives given to SMEs and reconfiguring innovativeness; revamping all old Industrial Development Centres and establishing new ones (IDCs); establishing SME clusters; upgrading rural-urban roads, introducing entrepreneurial studies; and emphasizing science among others

This paper explores the relationship between technological innovation and export performance of manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The subject of technological innovation and its impact on firms' export performances in developing nations is yet to exhaustively explored. In order to enrich the literature, this paper assesses the impact of technological innovation on the export performance of manufacturing SMEs in Nigeria. The sample for this study was drawn from 305 SMEs in the textile/leather/apparel and footwear subsector; wood/furniture and woodworks subsector; and domestic/industrial plastic and rubber subsector in Southwestern Nigeria. Data collected was analyzed using correlation analysis and regression analysis. The correlation result shows that process innovation, marketing and organizational innovations had positive relationship with export performance. However, the regression result confirmed that product, process and organizational innovations had positive impact on the export performance of firms. However, the control variable 'firm age' had significant impact on the export performance of firms. Generally, technological innovation accounts for about 50.9% of variation in the export performance of the manufacturing firms. The study concludes that technological innovation is critical elements for enhancing the performance of the manufacturing SMEs in the exports marketing particularly as the firms get older. Therefore, owners and managers of SMEs are encouraged to introduce more technological innovations in their firms as this has positive impact on firms' export performance.
SMEs’ Export Performance: The Effect of Learning Orientation and Innovativeness
Jurnal Pengurusan, 2018
This study investigates the role of innovativeness and learning orientation on the internationalisation performance of small and medium entrepreneurial firms. Exporting has been the most appropriate mode of expansion into foreign market for SMEs due to lower risk and less resource commitment. The literature insists that future study should pay more attention on how SMEs improve export performance. Review of literature brings to the conclusion that innovativeness and learning orientation are pertinent in building the success of SMEs in export markets. Notwithstanding the existing investigation on the impact of innovativeness on performance, the results are inconclusive, reinforcing the need for investigation in the context of emerging market and SMEs. In addition, learning orientation composed of three dimensions namely managerial commitment, system perspective and openness and experimentation. Previous studies view learning orientation as summate of all three dimensions. Unlike previous studies, this study investigates the effect of each dimension on innovativeness. A conceptual framework was developed based on the resource-based view. Data were collected from small and medium business exporters in the manufacturing sector of an emerging market. A total of 220 respondents participated in this study. Data were analysed using structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses, and the results show that innovativeness is positively related to export performance. In addition, the findings reveal that managerial commitment is a function of innovativeness. System perspective, and openness and experimentation have no significant effect on innovativeness. Implications and limitations are also discussed in this study.

The aim of the study is to determine the effect of innovation strategies on the performance of SMEs in Kaduna State. The study employs the survey research design and uses cross-sectional approach of data collection. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table for determining sample size was used to obtain a sample size of three hundred and thirty-eight (338) owners of SMEs in Kaduna State. Proportional sampling technique was used in selecting the sample size based on the nature of the population. A total of 338 copies of the questionnaire were distributed for data collection, only 305 copies were retrieved for analysis. Data collected were subsequently analysed using multiple regression analysis. Findings from the study established that innovation strategies have a significant and positive effect on SMEs performance in Kaduna State. Process and product innovations exerted the highest effect while organisational innovation have the lowest effect on SMEs performance however, technological innovation shows negative and inconsequential effect on SMEs performance. It was therefore recommended among others that, SMEs owners should overhaul their technological innovation strategy, as the one currently in used are not yielding the desired result hence, they should deploy recent technological equipment that are easy to use, faster and effective in serving their customers. KEYWORDS: SMEs performance, process innovation, product innovation, organisational innovation.

Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMES) are firms that act as catalysts and have been seen to support a country's growth and development. Despite concerted efforts from different stakeholders to improve the output of SMES, they still do not meet the standards that are required of them. The population of this study consist of SMES management staff of the selected SMES in Lagos State. The population comprised 8,396 owners/managers of SMES. The sample size was 471 and a stratified random sampling technique was employed. An adapted and validated questionnaire was administered to the respondents and the data gathered was analysed using multiple linear regression analysis. Innovation variables were found to have a significant combined effect on the competitiveness of selected SMES in Lagos State, Nigeria (R = 0.379, AdjR 2 = 0.136, p < 0.05). Product innovation with (β = 0.222; p = 0.033 < 0.05), process innovation with (β = 0.478; p = 0.023 < 0.05) and market innovation with (β = 1.028; p = 0.015 < 0.05). The study concludes that innovation has a significant effect on the competitiveness of SMES in Lagos State Nigeria. The study recommends that more efforts on innovation should be by SMES to sustain competitiveness.
SMEs innovation capabilities and export performance: an entrepreneurial orientation view
Economics and Management, 2017
Although there are several studies analysing how innovation capabilities influence export performance, this study aims to present the impact of a set of internal innovation capabilities on export performance of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs), with the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation contingent upon the proactive or reactive behaviour of the firms to external stimuli. The study involves the analysis of 147 questionnaire-based survey of managers from plastic manufacturing SMEs operating in Portugal that were subjected to a Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) technique. The results show that proactive firms to external stimuli are not only better at innovating but also their entrepreneurial orientation capabilities underpin a better performance in international markets when compared with firms that react to external stimuli. This study has implications for SMEs aiming at increasing their export performance and innovativeness. For practitioners the findings of this study should enable SMEs owner/managers to better understand the possible impacts of innovation capabilities and entrepreneurial orientation on export performance, and thus lead to more effective SMEs management.
