Background: Tobacco which is most common legally available hazardous substance, most of the new users in India's is school children. For prevention and control of tobacco consumption, legislation lies at the very heart of any effective tobacco control programme. Introduction: Nearly 6 million people die due to tobacco every year and this figure will increase to 8 million tobacco-attributed deaths per year by 2030 with 80% of them occurring in developing countries. Objective: To study the awareness and pattern of tobacco use among the undergraduate medical students of Government Medical College, Haldwani. Material and Methods: A Cross-sectional study was conducted among 303 medical students using a predesigned and pretested, semi-structured self-administered anonymous questionnaire. Data was analyzed by using SPSS v 16. Results: Among 303 participants, 44(14.5%) were smokers. Introduction: Tobacco consumption is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality all over the world. This habit is increasingly being taken up at an early age. Various factors have been implicated for the uptake of the habit including inadequate knowledge and unfavorable attitude.Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in urban schools in a town, located in South-west Karnataka. The students belonged to 8th and 9th grade and were aged between 13 to 15 years. A self-administered questionnaire adapted from Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was used for the study..Result: A total of 1271 students participated in the study with equal participation from boys and girls. Tobacco contains 4,000 harmful chemicals. A highly addictive substance in tobacco is nicotine, which affects a person's physical as well as mental health. It has effect on functions of brain, IQ level, thinking, and neurological functions it also leads to many kinds of cancer. By active and passive smoking women may develop cancer of breast and cervix. The studies assessing the knowledge & attitude of students towards smoking & it's effect on health. A descriptive research approach was adopted. The study was carried out among 100 pre-university college students at Bangalore. Self administered Knowledge & Attitude questionnaires were administered. The collected data were analysed by using descriptive & inferential statistics based on predefined objectives of the study. Present study showed that knowledge level of students was significantly (P<0.05) less & has more favourable attitude towards smoking & it's effect on health. Study suggested that proper education will enhance knowledge among students & helps to create awareness on effect of smoking on health.

A cross sectional study to assess the prevalence and awareness of tobacco consumption among school students in a cosmopolitan city of India

Background: Tobacco consumption is one of the leading preventable causes of cancer in the world. To reduce its prevalence awareness should be increased, especially among school going children as they are the important part of society and future of country. Present study was contemplated to assess the awareness of School Students from 9th to 12th standard regarding various aspects of tobacco consumption and its role in cancer. Methods: Cross sectional study among 778 school children in ten schools, randomly selected from Indore district of Madhya Pradesh, studying in 9 th to 12 th Standard using pre designed pretested semi structured questionnaire. Results: More than two third of the student know about tobacco and its uses. However only 41 (6.6%) had consumed any form of tobacco in their life time. Chewable form of tobacco use was more common. Peer pressure was the leading cause of initiating tobacco. 17 out 41 had some form of ill effect of tobacco. Despite of awareness that tobacco can lead to cancer, 70.7% of student had never tried to quit tobacco consumption. Conclusions: Peer pressure should be minimised by good family environment and moral values to prevent tobacco uses in adolescents.

Analysis about the Awareness of the Oral Consequences of Consuming Tobacco Products among College Students

Aim: The aim of this study is to conduct a survey among the college students about the awareness of the harm full effects of tobacco products on the oral health. Materials and method: A questionnaire containing 16 questions about the various effects of tobacco products on oral health was distributed among 120 students from different colleges. The answered questionnaires were collected and subjected to descriptive analysis to analyse the level of awareness among these students. Result: At the end of the study it is found that about 55.16% of the students who answered the questionnaire showed moderate to high level of awareness and about 44.83% of students did not have adequate awareness about the harmful consequences of tobacco consumption on the oral cavity.

Impact of Health Education on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding Use of Tobacco among the Student of Pre-University College in Belgaum: An Interventional Study

Background: India is the world’s second largest producer of tobacco and also the second largest consumer of unmanufactured tobacco. Health education is one of the primary interventions to bring about the changes in knowledge, mould favourable attitudes which would translate to healthy practices. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of the health education intervention on tobacco use as well as on knowledge and attitude of health hazards resulting from it among the study population. Materials and Methodology: An interventional study among students of Pre-University College (PUC) from January to September 2013 in the two pre-university college of Belgaum, Karnataka.
