Interoperability models in digital libraries: an overview

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the existing interoperability models in digital libraries and to introduce related projects in each model. Design/methodology/approach–The study starts from searching various databases with a combination of important keywords in the field, such as interoperability, digital library, meta-searching and cross-searching. The study follows up with describing related digital library projects in the field of technical interoperability.
Paving the Way for Interoperability in Digital Libraries: The DL.org Project

While Digital Libraries are working towards making universally accessible collections of human knowledge a reality, considerable advances are needed in Digital Libraries methodologies and technologies to make this happen. Achieving interoperability between Digital Libraries is a crucial requirement for reaching this goal. Interoperability is a multi-layered and context-specific concept. It encompasses different levels along a multidimensional spectrum ranging from organisational to technological aspects. Addressing the interoperability challenges is the prime goal of the DL.org project. DL.org is advancing the state of the art in this area, and is proposing solutions for interoperability in addition to best practices and shared standards, bringing together knowledge from the DELOS project and expertise of Digital Library stakeholders. To achieve its objectives, the project is looking at the DELOS Digital Library Reference Model and investigating interoperability from the viewpoint of the six fundamental Digital Library concepts: Content, User, Functionality, Quality, Policy, and Architecture. Our paper describes the results of DL.org research, and how the project is addressing the interoperability challenge from the perspectives of the six domains. Relevant Digital Library interoperability aspects will be described, from conceptualisation at a high organisational level to instantiation at process level, and modelling techniques for representing and enabling interoperability between heterogeneous digital library mediation approaches, methods, and systems. By pursuing the interoperability goal, DL.org is paving the way forward for embedding new research achievements into real-world systems, and is supporting the advancement of research and the creation of a European Information Space for the knowledge-based economy.

To cope with the explosion of electronically available information, Digital Libraries must interact if they are to meet the information requirements of their clients. This paper gives an overview of some of the key issues that digital projects will need to address so as to reach an acceptable level of interoperability.
Digital Library Interoperability: Proposing a Model
The main purpose of this paper is identifying the current situation of Iranian digital libraries in terms of interoperability abilities and proposing an interoperability solution for Iranian digital libraries. Analytical survey is used in this research. In fact, questionnaire and observation were used for collecting data about the current situation of Iranian digital library applications. The gathered data were analyzed by system analytical method in order to propose some practical suggestions to use in Iranian digital library applications. Iranian digital libraries mostly collect text files. They store data in SQL server and in relational database systems. The majority of Iranian digital libraries do not respect interoperability. They mostly use just Z39.50 clients so as to gather bibliographic data to use in cataloguing center. In fact, most of studied digital libraries do not offer extracting standard formats. Also, they do not make use of structural and administrative metadata format in their bibliographic data. The proposed model is based on harvesting model, OAI protocol and METS/MODS metadata standard. Findings indicated that Iranian digital libraries should be alert about the essence of interoperability. Using the proposed model would help them to be able to exchange their data in a more cost-efficient and cost-effective manner.

A Functionality Perspective on Digital Library Interoperability

Digital Library (DL) interoperability requires addressing a variety of issues associated with functionality. We report on the analysis and solutions identified by the Functionality Working Group of the DL.org project during its deliberations on DL interoperability. Ultimately, we hope that work based on our perspective will lead to improved architectures and software, as well as to greater interoperability, for next-generation DL systems.
Towards interoperability in digital libraries

We outline the five main research thrusts of the Stanford Digital Library project, and we describe technical details for two specific efforts that have been realized in prototype implementations. First, we describe how we employ distributed object technology to cope with interoperability among emerging digital library services. In particular, we describe how we use CORBA objects as wrappers to handle differences in service interaction models, and we sketch an information access protocol that takes advantage of distributed object environments. The second effort we cover is InterPay, a framework and protocol for payment among autonomous services. The framework addresses interoperability problems in online payment by cleanly separating information access protocols , payment and charging policies, and the actual mechanics of individual financial transactions.
Digital Libraries Interoperability Issues

Technological forces have and continue to change the global economy and the way of life in organizations and the world. The Internet and associated technologies have spurred evolutionary in traditional library, therefore digital library systems are being built in libraries. In addition, information retrieval is one of the key components of any digital library where it is the most fascinating and challenging area. Currently, digital libraries are widely disseminated over the Internet which allows users to send similar query for each digital library system separately and this is very cumbersome to the users. As such, it is desirable to provide a mechanism to foster interoperability between digital libraries. This mechanism would allow users to conduct searching across all systems with just one query. The paper explains issues that facilitate interoperability of digital libraries using semantic approach utilizing metadata. It would aid in developing semantic digital library as digital collections are made shareable among all education practitioners.
A workflow for document level interoperability

This article describes a software environment called the Exchange Center that helps digital librarians manage the workflow of sourcing documents and metadata from various repositories. The software is built on Greenstone but does not require its use as the final digital library server. After describing the software architecture we provide two scenarios of its use: a private library of recipes, which ultimately involves collaboration with other cooks; and a digital library that aggregates the collections of various host institutions that use different repository software.
