Abstract

Background Clinical practice is one of the major mechanism students to apply theoretical knowledge in to practice. This correlation of theory and practice, and the building of meaningful experience, take place during clinical practice in the health care Objective The aim study was to assess Perceived clinical practice competency and Determinant factors among Harar Health Science college students Easter Ethiopia Methods Institutional based cross-sectional study design was conducted to collect the data to assess factors affecting the clinical practice competency among health science student in Harar Health Science College simple random sampling was applied to select study subject. Data were entered using Epi data version 3.5.finally exported and analyzed by SPSS version 20. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify independent predictors Result The prevalence of perceived clinical practice competency was 125(47.5%). Students with adequate clinical case in practical placement were four times more likely perceived clinically competent than those students with inadequate clinical case with (AOR = 3.958, 95% CI 1.24, 12.7). students with instructor Spent enough time on clinical place were 2.4 times more likely perceived themselves clinically competent with (AOR = 2.42 95%:CI 1.4,4.3) than students with no clinical instructor support Conclusion and Recommendation: Clinical instructor support, adequate clinical case in practical placement, use continuous assessment checklist and integration of three learning domain were factors affect clinical practice competency of the students. So improving supervision of clinical instructors, appropriate selection of clinical site and design appropriate clinical practice protocol has important to enhance clinical practice competency of students.
