Part I of this chapter deals with conceptualizing emotion. By splitting up ‘emotion’ into an evaluative, expressive, behavioural, physiological, mental and phenomenological component, giving examples of emotion research theories and state-of-the-art technical systems, I will bring together an analytical and conceptual with empirical approaches to human-machine interaction to evaluate to what extent it may be logically appropriate to speak of ‘emotional machines’. I will give an overview of the mentioned components and their potential to be implemented into technical systems through functional equivalents. This concerns the technical recognition of emotion components in humans as well as the technical simulation/emulation of emotion components. Part II deals with human-machine relations and argues that human understanding of technical systems is crucial to a well-functioning society. I emphasise the importance of an in-depth human understanding of technical systems and plead for the integration of the voices and work of so-called mechanologists into cultural practices and discourse, from which the entire societal setup in which human-machine interaction takes place will benefit. Throughout the chapter I refer to some aspects of classical debates in psychology and philosophy on the relations of emotion, cognition, and consciousness. Additionally, I draw from psychologist and philosopher Gilbert Simondon’s, as well as from gestalt theorist Kurt Lewin’s writings.

Can machines simulate, express or even have emotions? Is it a good to build such machines? How do humans react emotionally to them and how should such devices be treated from a moral point of view? It thus relates disciplines such as philosophy, computer science, technology, psychology, sociology, design, and art. Emotions have puzzled and fascinated thinkers throughout history, from Plato and Aristotle to modern cognitive psychologists. Until relatively recently, the widely accepted view on emotions has been that they are only an interference on the neutral behaviour of a person. However, there has been a rapid increase in the study of the effects of emotion on cognition, popularizing the view that an adequate theory of cognition that ignores emotion is likely to prove inadequate (Eysenck, Keane, 2009).

The extensive propagation and usage of mobile computing devices in our everydays-life (and particulary in almost any situation) causes the opportunity for interacting with computers away from the desktop in an increasing amount [4]with the consequence, that the role of the user and his interactions in this environment become more and more variable. In my PhD thesis i will propose a software framework with corresponding hardware to support the interaction between human and computer in an implicit (non invasive) way by measuring and processing biological signals (the intention is to detect emotional states and react on it) with the goal of controlling computing devices by this.
