Performance evaluation of lean manufacturing implementation in Brazil
International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, 2014
Purpose -Manufacturing companies worldwide have been replacing traditional mass-production practices by lean initiatives. This translation process is progressive and may vary depending on several factors. Hence, it could be expected that the degree of adoption of the lean practices could vary significantly among industries, regions and even countries. The purpose of this paper is to explore the implementation performance of lean principles in Brazil, the paper developed a survey in the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area, which considered 51 industries of different sizes, from several industrial segments, nationals and multinationals. Design/methodology/approach -The proposed survey was developed using as a normative framework the SAE J4000 standard -identification and measurement of the best practice in implementation of lean operation and the SAE J4001 -implementation of lean operation user manual. To measure the implementation degree of the lean practices in the researched industries, the paper proposed the utilization of two concepts: the degree of leanness (DOL) of an element of J4000 and DOL of a company. Also three hypotheses were tested, trying to establish the relationship among the DOL and firm ownership, their size and respective industrial sector. Findings -The results obtained in the survey demonstrated that the performance of lean initiative implementation is not uniform among the companies located in the researched area. Outcomes also showed that the degree of implementation of the lean practices by multinational companies was higher than that for the national firms. However, it was not possible to establish a relationship between the DOL and the size of the firms. Neither a clear and definite association between DOL and industrial sector was possible to be identified. Practical implications -For the practitioners and managers dealing with the lean implementation, this paper gives a relevant contribution because it shows how they can effectively use an existing tool to measure the implementation of the lean practices in their respective firms. Furthermore, the DOL calculation for each individual element of the J4000 standard could also be used by practitioners and managers to identify specific problems and opportunity areas where practical actions could be identified to improve the lean implementation. Originality/value -This paper contributes to the lean manufacturing theory because it proposes a theoretical way to measure the degree of implementation of the lean initiatives in the manufacturing companies. Also the survey results generate additional research material that could be used by other researchers to further explore the subject in the area.
Lean Manufacturing and Business Performance in Brazilian Firms
Journal of Operations and Supply Chain Management, 2013
In this paper, we examine the relationship among lean manufacturing management, competitive skills, and business performance from the perspective of managers of companies doing business in Brazil. We conduct a survey of 68 Brazilian companies that use lean manufacturing and analyze data using structural equation modeling based on partial least squares method. Results show, considering competitive skills as mediating variable, a positive relationship between lean manufacturing and business performance. Results also suggest that managers lack awareness about the importance of the competitive skills to enhance business performance.
The Use of Lean Production Practices & Principles in the Brazilian Automotive Cluster of Paraná
The relevance of practices and principles of Lean to help automotive industries to become more competitive has been receiving more attention nowadays, mainly in a market like that with high pressure of costs and global competition. However it is necessary to research which tools have been used to improve this production system. This paper aims to identify the main Lean Production practices and principles (P&P) adopted in the auto parts industry of the second largest Brazilian automotive cluster. Therefore, it was applied the questionnaires of the HPM (High Performance Manufacturing), that is an international project conducted by several universities around the world. The methodology described here will be a survey; the questionnaires were applied to nine companies in the automotive cluster of Paraná. The consistency, reliability and validity of responses were verified by applying the Cronbach’s Alpha test. The results shown that there is a high level of understanding and application of Lean Production P&P in the automotive cluster of Paraná, especially with regard to the pull production (Pace Maker), continuous flow, visual control (Andon), autonomation (Jidoka), capacity leveling (Heijunka), multifunctionality, standardized working intructions tools (SWI), OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) and, mainly, understanding the Lean Culture of long term.
Lean Production assessment: Case study in auto parts companies from Brazil and Spain
2011
The lack of a coordinated and structured way in the Lean Production implementation may result in poor and disappointing results. In this way, identification and measurement of best practices, followed by the evaluation of its usage level in the organizations, is the way through which the Lean Production may be reached, focusing the elimination or minimization of waste. The purpose of this paper is to present a field research carried out within companies of the automotive sector, analyzing the adherence level in Lean Production implementation, being the data collected in Brazilian and Spanish companies. In order to do so, the main groundings of Lean Production are presented, the analysis on the adherence level is performed by using the SAE J4000 standards and the results are obtained considering a statistical analysis of the data. The obtained results offer to the organizations some outstanding points regarding the Lean Production practices implementation.
Lean Management Practice: Toyota Brazilian Plants Case
This paper aims to analyze the Toyota Production System (TPS) applied to Toyota Brazilian plants. The TPS is recognized as a promoter of competitiveness in the automotive environment. Nevertheless, many companies work with the TPS in an unstructured way. Case Studie has been used and collect data through interviews in four Brazilian plants of the Toyota group. This paper use factors of work organization (communication, training, incentive) and factors of production organization (problem solving methods, 5S, poka yoke) to analyze TPS. Results have indicated similarity in the daily work of the plants researched consistent with the headquarters orientation and the lean manufacturing literature despite the Brazilian cultural aspect.
Abstract number = 007-0153 Lean manufacturing principles: Are Venezuelan firms applying them?
2007
Lean manufacturing principles are being applied by many successful enterprises all around the world. This paper, based on a sample of 30 Venezuelan manufacturing firms, analyzes the lean manufacturing practices currently used by these firms. Data has been gathered thanks to the questionnaire prepared for the fourth edition of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS), a tool that periodically surveys manufacturing firms about their manufacturing and supply chain strategies, practices and performance. This IMSS edition has focused on industrial firms manufacturing machinery, electric and electronic devices, medical and optical equipment, all kinds of vehicles and, in general, metal parts and components. We have chosen the answers related to lean aspects in order to see how far these subjects have been adopted by Venezuelan firms. Results show that, even if there is room to improvement opportunities, Venezuelan firms are adapting lean practices to an environment characterized by constraints in international merchandising exchange.

Sustainability, 2022
The mass production paradigm on which much of the industry was based has changed. The market is increasingly demanding, requesting diversity and products that are more and more adapted to personal wishes and requirements. This implies producing a greater diversity of products in smaller quantities. Competitiveness is enormous, which forces most companies to be truly effective and efficient, taking care of product quality, delivery time, and final cost. Lean methodologies have been a valuable aid in this field. The diversity of Lean tools has been shown to have answers to the most diverse challenges, and companies are aware of this, increasingly adopting methodologies and processes that aim to progressively reduce waste and adapting their production paradigm to what the market requires. This work intends to provide a vision, as global as possible, of the pathway of Lean implementation in the Portuguese industry. For this purpose, a survey was carried out with a significant sample of ...
