Developmental Readiness of Private School Children: A study of Gender Differences
Developmental Readiness plays a very crucial role in early childhood period and set basis for later development. It assures smooth and successful transition of children from preschool to primary school. Developmental readiness work as a tool for making a child ready for school and had long term influence on academic achievement. The present study was conducted with the aim to assess the gender difference in developmental readiness of private school children. The sample size of study comprised of 200 children (i.e. 100 girls and 100 boys) of class-I selected through Multi stage sampling technique. The data was collected by using self-structured Developmental Readiness Checklist. The results of study revealed that most of the girls and boys had high level of skills across all domains of developmental readiness. Overall analysis of developmental readiness showed that both girls and boys were almost developmentally ready for formal schooling. The analysis of gender differences elucidates non-significant results in all domains except in cognitive and gross motor skills. Girls displayed significantly better cognitive abilities than boys whereas boys performed significantly better in gross motor skills. Some recommendation are suggested based on the results of the study.

Emotional disorders influence pupils' school adjustment, but there are some serious deficiencies as regards the identification of the children in question. Hence the need for reliable and valid diagnostic tools. The objectives of this study are twofold: to study the rates of school maladjustment, clinical maladjustment and emotional symptoms according to sex and age; and to adapt to the Basque language (euskara) and subsequently validate the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), in its selfreport version for pupils aged 8 to 12 years (S2). Participants were 795 pupils from seven schools in the Basque Country Autonomous Region. Fifteen per cent of the pupils presented school maladjustment, the rate in boys being higher than in girls. Thirteen per cent also presented emotional symptoms, which were especially detected in 12-year-old girls. As regards the Basque version of the BASC-S2, its psychometric properties were found to be adequate.

Recent studies have indicated that health-risk behaviors and behavioral problems are appearing increasingly at a younger age within the Latin-American population. The Inventory of School Difficulties in Adolescents (ISDA. Martinez-Gonzalez & Vera-Villarroel, 2013) is a new screening scale of 13 items that assesses behavioral problems and common risky behaviors highly relevant within educational settings, especially related to school failure. The aim of this study is to examine the psychometric properties and factor structure of the ISDA. The ISDA, a social-demographic questionnaire and a measure of anxiety and depression symptoms were applied to a sample of 719 Chilean adolescents. The results indicate that the ISDA contains a bi-factor structure: behavioral problems and risky behaviors for health. Estimations of internal consistency and test-retest reliability, as well as evidences of convergent-discriminant validity were adequate. Therefore, the ISDA is an adequate screening tool ...

The Executive Function is a set of cognitive processes that are developed from the earliest ages. Recent studies in children with disruptive behaviour disorders suggest the presence of effects on the executive functioning. The aim of this study is to know the association among symptoms of Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder, and Executive Function in children from 3 to 6 years old. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. An assessment was performed on a sample of 444 subjects from Spain; it was made through an inventory for parents and teachers to estimate the capacity of Executive Function. Results: a relation between the symptoms of Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and the Executive Function deficit was found. The presence of symptoms of Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder inattentive type is associated with deficiencies in all ...

This study aimed to identify possible variables associated with cognitive, behavioral and emotional development in a cohort of school children, based on biological (sex, gestational age and birth weight) and socioeconomic variables (marital status, maternal and paternal education, occupation of head of household, socioeconomic status, and number of household members). We evaluated 790 children born in a cohort of Ribeirão Preto (SP), Brazil, with 10/11 years of age. The Raven Test was used for cognitive assessment and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was utilized for emotional and behavioral assessment. By means of multivariate logistic regression analysis (CI 95%) we found that: 1) low maternal schooling was associated with behavioral and emotional problems and poor cognitive function, 2) being female was considered as a protective factor against behavioral problems and 3) low birth weight and prematurity were not associated with the outcomes investigated.

Our study sought to compare mothers' behavioral repertoire (educational social skills and negative practices) and maternal anxiety and depression indicators with children's behaviors (behavior problems and social skills), by assessing the variables "sex" (boys and girls) and "occurrence of behavior problems". The sample consisted of 20 children with behavior problems (clinical group), 20 without behavior problems (non-clinical group), their mothers and teachers. Reporting instruments were used with teachers and mothers and comparative analyzes were conducted between groups. The results indicated that the clinical group had higher rates of behavior problems and maternal depressive symptoms, whereas the non-clinical group showed more child social and educational social skills. Sex did not differ between groups. We concluded that maternal educational practices are more influenced by children's behaviors than by their sex.

Being at risk or in social vulnerability situations can affect important aspects of child development. The aim of this study was to investigate fundamental motor skills (locomotor and object control) and school (writing, arithmetic, reading) performances, the perceived competence and the nutritional status of girls and boys living in social vulnerability in the poorest regions of Brazil. Two hundred eleven (211) children (87 girls, 41%), 7-10-year-old (M = 8.3, SD = 0.9), from public schools in Ceará (Brazil), living in social vulnerability, participated in the study. Children were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-2, the Body Mass Index (BMI), the Self-Perception Profile for Children, and the School Performance Test. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), adjusted for age, did not show any significant effect for locomotion. There was an effect of gender on the object control. Boys showed higher scores in striking, kicking, throwing, and rolling a ball. Quade's nonparametric analysis showed no difference in BMI between the genders. Most children presented healthy weight. The MANCOVA showed no effect of gender on children's scores on perceived competence on the subscales; moderate scores were found for most children. There were no gender effects on school performance; both boys and girls demonstrated inferior performance. Boys and girls in social vulnerability showed inferior performance in most motor skills, moderate perceived competence and inferior school performance. These results reveal that the appropriate development of these children is at risk and that intervention strategies should be implemented to compensate the difficulties presented.
