Nutrition related knowledge and attitudes of mothers and teachers of kindergarten children

International Journal of Public Health Science (IJPHS), 2022

Programs focusing on health and nutrition help ensure children's early development. Nutrition knowledge of families and teachers has a significant impact on children's eating habits and dietary patterns. Recently, there is an increase in the number of daycare schools in North Cyprus, offering services between 8 AM to 6 PM and provide two main meals and two snacks during the day. This study was carried out to understand the nutrition-related knowledge of kindergarten teachers and mothers of children aged 2-5 and their attitudes towards nutrition, and find the deficiencies in the knowledge and attitude of both groups as they significantly impact dietary habits of children. The 121 participants from the Kyrenia District, Turkish Republic of North Cyprus were enrolled, 79 were educators in the kindergarten and 42 were mothers. It was observed that there is no statistically significant difference between mothers' and teacher's knowledge and attitude of the nutritional content of foods. Our study also showed that though mothers were educated and possessed knowledge of nutrients yet their attitudes did not reflect it. Our study revealed that the current knowledge status of teachers and caregivers, as well as their attitudes towards various aspects of diet, are not sufficient to lay the foundation of healthy eating.

Journal of Health, Medicine and Nursing, 2020

The objective of this study to determine the attitudes of elementary school teachers in Turkey towards nutrition education, nutrition courses in schools and the school food environment and to analyze differences by gender. The study used a cross-sectional online survey design. Descriptive statistics were used for the demographic characteristics and teachers' attitudes. Teachers' attitudes by gender were analyzed using independent t tests. Participants were 1796 elementary classroom teachers in 527 schools, 56% male. Teachers rated highly that classroom nutrition education is very important (mean = 4.17 on a 5-point scale), and should be practical (3.66); that nutrition taught as a separate subject was more likely to be effective (3.99) and government agencies, universities, and teachers should collaborate to provide it (4.34). They agreed that the school food environment can have a positive influence on student nutrition habits (4.32). Women teachers judged all attitude statements more positively than men, many significantly so. Classroom teachers have very positive attitudes towards practical nutrition education in the classroom and improving the school food environment. Providing teachers with the necessary culturally-based curricula and skills and having them collaborate with relevant agencies and organizations may contribute to their effectiveness.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a nutrition education program in participating preschools. As criteria for evaluation of the program, changes in selected nutritional practices reported by the institutions' staff as well as their opinion on the program were analyzed. Material and methods. The research consisted primarily of a survey, performed in 2015 and repeated in 2016 in randomly selected preschools participating in the program "Eating healthy, growing healthy" in Poland. In 2015, 66 institutions were included in the survey, and in 2016, 138 preschools were included. In both, the CATI method was used for data collection, and data were collected by specially trained interviewers. respondents were asked about selected nutrition-related practices in the institution (e.g. usage of salt/sugar, water availability, meal presentation). They also evaluated the suitability of the program for diet planning in the preschool setting. Results. Preschool managers evaluated the project very highly in terms of value and usefulness of the content in their daily practice. The program has brought results in changing nutrition practices: salt and sugar in the children's meals were reduced, water availability was increased, and menus were adapted to current nutritional recommendations. The high evaluation of the program increased the reported interest in participating in similar programs in the future, however, it did not translate into a greater willingness to include paid "healthy eating" workshops in the institutions. Conclusions. Nutrition education improved the quality of nutrition in preschools, but in order to reach a wide range of institutions, it is necessary to focus on the implementation of free-ofcharge educational programs.

The Effect of Nutrition Education on School-Aged Children’s Consumption Pattern, Knowledge and Practice in Bringing Well-Balanced Menu for Lunch

Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology, 2020

This study aimed to analyze the effect of nutrition education on the consumption pattern, knowledge, and practice in bringing a well-balanced menu (WBM) for lunch among school-aged children. The study was quasi-experimemtal research using one group with pre-and post-test. Subjects were 52 students in fifth grade at SDN Babakan Dramaga 04, Bogor. The study was conducted from February to April 2017 and nutrition education was provided twice in 2 wk. The first post-test for nutritional knowledge was done 1 wk after the nutrition education, while the evaluation of the practice of bringing WBM for lunch was conducted 2 wk after the intervention. The second and third post-tests were performed every 2 wk after that. The knowledge of balanced nutrition increased after the intervention. The initial nutritional knowledge was significantly different from those of the first and second post-tests with p values of 0.003 and 0.01, respectively. Subjects showed an improvement in the practice of bringing a well-balanced menu for lunch after the nutrition education intervention. It was also shown that carbohydrate intake at the third post-test was related to nutritional status after the intervention. The practice of bringing WBM for lunch should be continued by students and monitored by physical education teachers. Parents, especially mothers, should support their children by providing balanced and nutritious food at home.
