Magnetism of rare earth tetraborides
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2010
The rare earth tetraborides REB4 with RE = Ho, Er, Tm, crystallize in a tetragonal lattice where the positions of the RE ions can be mapped to a Shastry Sutherland lattice. We have investigated the magnetic properties by means of magnetisation and specific heat experiments in a magnetic field. All compounds are anisotropic, with RE= Er, Tm they are strong Ising magnets, for RE = Ho we find xy anisotropy. In magnetic field we find complex behaviour with a number of different phases as a function of applied field, field direction and temperature. Remarkable is the observation of fractional magnetisation plateaux for magnetic field || (001) in HoB4 and TmB4.
Magnetic Properties of Some Rare Earth Dodecaborides
We present results of magnetic measurements performed on TmB12, ErB12, H o B 12 single-crystalline samples and on a DyB12 poly-crystalline sample in 9.5 mT magnetic field and at temperatures between 1.6 K and 300 K. From the observed dependences, which refer to antiferromagnetic ordering in all samples, their N eel temperatures, paramagnetic Curie temperatures, and the effective magnetic moments of the corresponding rare earth ions were determined. The obtained results are compared with values received by other measurements.
Experimental evidence of noncollinear magnetism in gadolinium tetraboride
Physical Review B, 2005
Recently, the collinear or noncollinear character of the magnetic structure of gadolinium tetraboride ͑GdB 4 ͒, laying the magnetic moments in the ab plane, becomes a matter of controversy. In the present study, the observations obtained from resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility measurements on a single crystal sample contain no evidence for a structural phase transition in this material above or below the Néel temperature T N. In addition to these measurements, the resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction structure factors derived from all the possible arrangements for Gd magnetic moments compatible with the room temperature tetragonal P4/mbm space group are calculated. The intensity derived with Shubnikov magnetic P4/mЈbЈmЈ and P4Ј / mЈbЈm space groups are found to account for the previously published resonant x-ray diffraction data on GdB 4. ͑Both Shubnikov groups have magnetoelectric symmetry.͒
Bulk and local magnetic susceptibility of ErB12
Acta Physica Polonica Series a
High precision measurements of magnetoresistance ∆ρ/ρ = f (T, H) and magnetization M (T, H) were carried out on single crystals of rare-earth dodecaboride ErB12 at temperatures in the interval 1.8-30 K in magnetic fields up to 70 kOe. The high accuracy of the experiments allowed us to perform numerical differentiation and analyze quantitatively the behavior of the derivative d(∆ρ/ρ)/dH = f (T, H) and of the magnetic susceptibility χ(T, H)= dM /dH in paramagnetic and magnetically ordered (antiferromagnetic, T N ≈ 6.7 K and T M ≈ 5.85 K) phases of ErB 12 . It was shown that negative magnetoresistance anomalies observed in present study in paramagnetic state of ErB 12 may be consistently interpreted in the framework of a simple relation between resistivity and magnetization -∆ρ/ρ ∼ M 2 .
Magnetic structure studies of ternary borides Er2−xCexFe14B
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2011
The ternary borides Er 2 À x Ce x Fe 14 B (x ¼ 0.25, 1, 1.5and 1.7) have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements in order to verify the postulated occurrence of conical arrangement of magnetic moments in the region of high Ce-composition. Character of spin reorientation phenomena was investigated by means of 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy in the spin reorientation temperature region for polycrystalline and pseudo-single crystal samples. Obtained Mössbauer spectra were analyzed using a procedure of transmission integral. Consistent description of Mössbauer spectra was obtained. Initial magnetization versus temperature measurements (field cooled and zero-field cooled) allowed to estimate the character and temperature regions of reorientation process. The results that are obtained with different methods were compared. The obtained experimental data do not support the hypothesis of conical arrangement of magnetic moments at low temperatures for the compounds with high Ce-composition. Our results are consistent with the current model of spin reorientation in these compounds as a process where magnetic moments rapidly change their orientation from planar to axial arrangement without intermediate conical states.
Crystals
We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of a series of powder samples of SrYb2−xErxO4 with different Yb/Er concentrations. Magnetometry and neutron diffraction have been used to study the magnetic ground states of the compound series, while inelastic neutron scattering was used to investigate the crystal field excitations for a chosen concentration. These results show that the crystal structure remains the same for all compositions, while the lattice parameters increase linearly with the Er content. All compounds showed some type of magnetic transition below 1 K, however, both the magnetic structure and nature of the phase transition vary throughout the series. The samples present a non-collinear magnetic structure with the moments lying on the ab plane for low Er content. For high Er content, the magnetic structure is collinear with the moments aligned along the c-axis. A critical concentration is found where there is a bifurcation between zero-field...
Magnetic properties of hexagonal RNi4B (R=Ce, Nd, Gd, Dy) compounds
Solid State Communications, 2002
Magnetic properties of the intermetallic phases RNi 4 B (R ¼ Ce, Nd, Gd and Dy) are presented. Dependence of the magnetic moment on magnetic field H up to 6 T and on temperature in the range 4-300 K has been studied. CeNi 4 B is paramagnetic, while RNi 4 B alloys with R ¼ Nd, Gd, Dy are ferromagnetic with T C ¼ 12; 35 and 15 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic region CeNi 4 B follows the Curie-Weiss law with m eff ¼ 0:52 m B =f:u: and u ¼ 210:7 K: The magnetic moments of rare earths are reduced in comparison with free ion values. The coercivity H C of these compounds is in the range 1.
Magnetic Properties and the Electronic Structure of the Gd0.4Tb0.6Co2 Compound
Materials
We report on the comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of magnetic and electronic structural properties of the Gd0.4Tb0.6Co2 compound crystallization in the cubic Laves phase (C15). We present new results and compare them to those reported earlier. The magnetic study was completed with electronic structure investigations. Based on magnetic isotherms, magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) was determined for many values of the magnetic field change (Δμ0H), which varied from 0.1 to 7 T. In each case, the ΔSM had a maximum around room temperature. The analysis of Arrott plots supplemented by a study of temperature dependency of Landau coefficients revealed that the compound undergoes a magnetic phase transition of the second type. From the M(T) dependency, the exchange integrals between rare-earth R-R (JRR), R-Co (JRCo), and Co-Co (JCoCo) atoms were evaluated within the mean-field theory approach. The electronic structure was determined using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (X...
