Developing Good Moral Sexual Behaviours Among University Undergraduates in Nigeria: The Role of Religion

This paper examined the role of religion in the development of good moral sexual behaviours among University Undergraduates. Value Re-Orientation: A Strategy for Combating Moral Decadence among Students of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

Value reorientation and reviving the social life of our youth in tertiary institution through counselling and moral education is very important at this time that our nation is in a state of series of insurgencies. The decay in the society has affected the values and moral character of our youths in tertiary institutions. This has manifested in many social vices such as cultism, thuggery, examination malpractices among others. This paper focused on value reorientation as strategy for combating moral decadence among students of tertiary institutions in Kwara State. Four research questions were raised to guide the conduct of the study. The study is a survey research and a sample of 600 students randomly selected from four state owned tertiary institutions across Kwara State was selected. Data collected through questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that the type of moral decadence that is mostly exhibited among tertiary institutions are lack of respect for constituted authorities, examination malpractice, indecent dressing amongst others. These moral decadence are the result of lapses from parents, peer influence and societal influence. The effect of moral decadence and strategies for combating it were identified. Factors Influencing the Sexual Behaviour of Undergraduate Students in Adeleke University, Osun State, Nigeria

Introduction: As part of the young age group (16-30 years), university undergraduates are an important group exposed to a wide range of risky behaviours. The increased privacy afforded by living outside of their parents' home provides greater opportunity for sexual expression. The objective of this study was to assess the Factors Influencing Sexual Behaviour of Undergraduate Students in Adeleke University, Osun State, Nigeria Methods And Materials: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted. A simple random sampling was used for this study. A total of 301 self-administered semi structured questionnaire was used. A bivariate analysis by using the chi-square test statistics 0.05 level of significance was used. Results: A total of 301 students were enrolled in the study. Male respondents were 137 (45.5%) and female respondents were 164 (54.5%). Among them 56.8% had ever engaged in sexual intercourse, 51.5% of the respondents watch pornographic movies always, and 31.6% of the respondents have multiple sexual partner. 128 (42.5%) of the respondents come across any sexual information on social media always and 152 (50.5%) came across any sexual information on social media sometimes. Conclusion: This study revealed the sexual behaviours among Adeleke University undergraduate student, some of the major factors influencing the student's sexual behaviour was pressure by peers/friends to have sex and pressure to have sex due to bad economic situation or for economic gains.

Associated Factors Mitigating Undergraduate Students of Ekiti State University, Ado – Ekiti , Nigeria Into Risky Sexual Behavior

The study examined the associated factors related to risky sexual behavior among undergraduate students. Four hundred students aged 15-24 years (mean age 21.3years, SD 0.85) were recruited from Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria and completed personally administered questionnaire on parental rejection; peer group; depression; exposure to pornography and self-esteem. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and simple percentage was used to analyze demographic data of the respondents, findings shows that 66.1% were between 15-19 years and 33.9% were between 20-24 years, this reflection that they were relatively young and sexually actives, this is confirmed by the National Demography Survey Data (NDHS) which revealed that more than half (66.1%) of adolescents' aged 15-19 were sexually active (NPC, 2009). Inferential statistics of linear regression was used to analyze the data collected and findings indicated that parental rejection F-ratio was 2.305, P<0.05; peer group F-ratio was 2.503, P<0.05; depression Fratio was 2.103, P<0.05; exposure to pornography F-ratio was 2.004, P<0.05 and self-esteem F-ratio was 2.201, P<0.05. Parental behavior and peer influence were the most mitigating variables associated with risky sexual behavior among undergraduate students. This paper call for peers to create a sense of normative behavior in which early debut, having multiple sexual partners, and inconsistent condom use may be supported or rejected by peers, thus becoming a peer group norm and comprehensive sex education programs that provide necessary sexual health knowledge about safe sex should be developed and implemented in Nigeria universities.

THE MORAL IMPLICATION OF PREMARITAL SEX AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ANAM ANAMBRA WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ANAMBRA STATE NIGERIA

The study investigated the moral implication of premarital sex among secondary school students in Anam, Anambra west local government area of Anambra state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design guided the study. Population of the study is five hundred and twenty (520) students of senior secondary school year 2 from the 7 public schools in Anam community. Purposive sampling technique was employed to select 5 out of the 7 public secondary schools in Anam community for the study. A sample size of two hundred (200) students was selected for the study. The questionnaire was tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha method. Cronbach’s Alpha method was used to calculate for reliability coefficients, and the following were gotten: for factor that bring about premarital sex (0.695); for consequences of premarital sex (0.721); for students’ attitude towards premarital sex (0.847), and for moral implications of premarital sex (0.715). The study adopted Mean (X) as instrument for data analysis. Results revealed that factors which influence secondary school students’ premarital sex practices include: sustained pressure from peers and friends for sexual practices; poor parental and guardians’ upbringing among others. It was recommended among others that parents should endeavour to provide necessary support for their children in order to discourage commercial sex among in-school adolescents.

ANALYSIS OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MORAL MATURITY AND HUMAN VALUES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between the moral maturity and human values of university students. The study was a quantitative research and was conducted with the correlational survey model. The study group of the study consisted of 764 students selected by simple random sampling method, one of the random sampling methods from five academic units (one college, one vocational high school and three faculties) among the students who continued their education in the 2019-2020 academic year at a state university. A data collection tool consisting of "Moral Maturity Scale" and "Human Values Scale" was used. Independent Samples t-Test, ANOVA and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistical techniques were used to analyze the data. According to the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant difference in university students ' moral maturity levels in terms of gender, academic unit, father's level of education, mother's level of education, economic status and the number of books they read in the last month. Furthermore, it was found that there was a significant difference in the human values of university students depending on gender, academic unit and the number of books they read in the last month. It was revealed that there was a positive, strong and significant relationship between moral maturity and human values scores of university students. As a result, moral maturity and human values differed according to various variables, and there was a high relationship between the two concepts mentioned.

Sexual-Moral Attitudes of Chinese College Students: Two Moral Criteria Systems?

The aim of this study is to develop a valid scale to measure the construct of the sexual-moral attitudes of Chinese college students. Based on open questionnaire investigation, in-depth interviews, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, the 20-item Sexual-Moral Attitudes Scale (SMAS) was developed and emerged with good psychometric properties. The multi-hierarchy and multi-dimension construct was confirmed. It can be concluded that contemporary Chinese college students has two moral criteria systems to regulate their sexual behaviors. The first one is the Basic Sexual-Moral Principles, which includes two first-hierarchy dimensions as Sense of Responsibility and Sense of Ethics; the second one is Strict Sexual-Moral Principles, which includes three first-hierarchy dimensions as Being in Love, Chastity and Fidelity.

Sexual Behaviours And Practises of Unmarried Young People in A Nigerian State University

Background: Sexual behaviours and practises of the youth are important in an era of HIV/AIDS especially since a third of Nigerian population are young. Parent-child sexuality communication has been identified as a protective factor for adolescent sexual and reproductive health, including HIV infection. Objectives: To assess sexual behaviours and practises of unmarried young undergraduates and factors which may influence them. Methods: A questionnaire based cross-sectional study of 246 youths aged 15-24 years was done. SPSS version 20.0 was used for data analysis. Chi 2 and t-test were used to test for significance. p<0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: Mean age of participants was 21.9+2.02years, 53.4% were males and 49.5% were of upper socioeconomic class. Sexual intercourse had occurred in 208(74.4%) of which 193(92.8%) were currently sexually active.The mean age at sexual debut was 15.98+3.95years, while 16.67+4.03years and 15.41+3.81years were for females and males respectively(t=39.85, p<0.001). Contraceptive-use occurred in 135(64.9%) majority attributing non-use to misconceptions, non-availability and non-accessibility of contraceptive devices. The nature of first sexual intercourse was consensual for 146(52.0%) while the rest were either forced or coerced into intercourse, majority without contraceptives. Majority of participants had no formal discussions about sex and sexuality with parents/school teachers. Those of the upper socioeconomic class were more likely to use contraceptives and to communicate freely with parents on sex. Conclusion: While majority of young people in our locale are currently sexually active, unsafe sexual practices are the norm. Parent-child sex and sexuality education is thereby recommended.
