The tragedy of ethics: Why good organizations do bad things
Instead of explaining the unethical behavior of employees in terms of their bad organization (the so-called bad barrel theory), this article examines how a good organization can explain employees’ unethical behavior. The basic premise is that the more ethical an organization becomes, the higher, in some respects, is the likelihood of unethical behavior. This is due to four threaten-ing forces that become stronger when an organization becomes more ethical. Each of the forces is illustrated with two effects and each effect is ex-plained by a specific theory. This tragedy of ethics, where goodness breeds badness, opens new research directions.
Toward an Ethical Theory of Organizing
Current organizations are underpinned by utilitarian ethics of Modernity. Pure economic motive driven organizations detach themselves from larger societal interest. Rising number of corporate scandals and intraor-ganizational income inequalities are breeding similar trends in society at large. Current organizations base their competitive advantage on resources and capabilities which boils down to economic supremacy at all cost whether it is named I/O or RBV of the firm. This theoretical article posits Ethics-based Trust as the main competency and capability for attaining sustained competitive advantage. It in no way condemns utility view of the firms but treats it as a natural yet secondary outcome of genuine ethicality of the firm. Cultivating an ethical culture in the firm through identifying antecedents, organizational practices, and the outcomes where profitability is an automatic but secondary outcome under the supremacy of ethics is detailed in the multilevel model presented in this article. The main call of this article is to posit ethics and morality over and above short-term profits so that organizations fulfill their trustee role for society through enacting socio-humanistic theories within organizations. A brief analysis of the proposed ethical theory of firm is undertaken in light of the ''schooling'' notion in the contemporary organization theory literature.

Recent research demonstrates that, in ethically relevant tasks, individuals base intentionality judgments on action outcomes, rather than mental states only. In a first place, the current thesis extends those findings to responsibility judgments and examines affective and attitudinal characteristics moderating the relationship between outcomes and moral judgment. At a second place, the current thesis discusses ethical organizational activity with a focus on intensified ethical behavior enacted following involvement in heavy unethical activity. In so doing, the current thesis intends to problematize the extent to which motivation behind such organizational attitudes is genuinely trying to compensate for the negative effects of organizational wrong-doing. Various organizational factors reported in the hitherto literature affect individual (mis)behaviour within a company. In this paper, we conduct a literature review thereof, and propose a notion of the “Organizational Moral Structure” defined as a comprehensive framework of interrelated organizational factors that condition, incite or influence good or bad moral behaviour of individuals within the organization. Drawing from a wide bibliographical review and our own reflection on recent business scandals, we identify seven constituents of the “Organizational Moral Structure”: 1) leader’s values and character, 2) vision and exercise of power, 3) corporate control systems, 4) internal network of influence, 5) organizational culture, 6) internal and competitive pressures, and 7) external influences. Many efforts to understand and respond to a succession of corporate scandals over the last few years have underscored the importance of organizational culture in shaping the behavior of individuals. This focus reflects appreciation that even if an organization has adopted elaborate rules and policies designed to ensure legal compliance and ethical behavior, those pronouncements will be ineffective if other norms and incentives promote contrary conduct. Responding to the call for creating and sustaining an ethical culture in organizations requires appreciating the subtle ways in which various characteristics of an organization may work in tandem or at cross-purposes in shaping behavior. This ebook is the extension of another ebook Cases for Development ofEnvironmental and Ethical Competence, published by Viinius University in 2010 (ISBN: 978-9955-33-610-5) when carrying out the networking project Development of Environmental and Ethical Competence in Leadership and Management (project website: decom.vulchf.lt), funded by Nordplus Framework Programme in 2009-2010. The project was prompted by a need to highlight sustainability and accountability m business education curricula. Thus, the project partners from Estonian Business School, Norwegian School of Management BI, the University of Jyväskylä, Viinius University (the coordinator) and from 2010 Hanken School of Economics aimed to develop a curriculum that addresses management of environmental and ethical responsibilities of business and, in this way, contributes to raising business professionais' awareness of potential business risks as well as business opportunities opened by responsible behaviour. Another objective of the project was to highiight a socio-cultural perspective of decision-making and behaviours of the Nordic-Baltic societies in the cases which are presented in this publication. This ebook contains "old" and new case studies, yet with introductory chapters, which makes it possible to use it as a textbook. Some "old" cases in this edition were amended after their trial in an intensive course Cases in OrganizationalEthics in 2011. The partners then agreed to write introductory chapters to the topics that their cases cover. This version of the leaming material will be used in the same-titled intensive course in the forthcoming years in the partner universities. Jn the year 2012, the project on Development ofMoral Competence in Leadership and Management that focuses on an intensive programme alone was initiated with new competences and fresh outlooks from business ethics professionals from Tampere University and Riga International School of Economics and Business. The cases therein are meant for intermediate or advanced level students in management and leadership. However, wider use of the cases in other degree programmes is welcome. The cases address four issues that can he met in today's business world, namely, gendered practices in organizations, ethical leadership, impiementation of environmental standards and corporate volunteering. The cases have general and case-specific questions to be answered either alone by the student, after doing the required (also recommended) reading or / and in groups, when discussing implications of the issues described in the cases to organization management. Some of the organizations under scrutiny are fiction; some are real, yet, for the purposes of discussion of administrative and managerial issues are kept anonymous. The case of Swedbank in Lithuania invites participants to explore factual activities of this bank in the (course) participants' countries. This edition is a resuit of contribution provided by the participant organizations of the project. Thanks go to the authors of this edition who patiently waited for its publication in a new electronic format. Ali of them contributed their time, pedagogical experience and knowledge ofbusiness.
