Utilizing Short Story to Improve the Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement at the Second Grade of Sma Negeri 1 Sindang Indramayu

The objectives of this research is to investigate (1) whether there is any significant difference of the students' reading comprehension after being taught through Short Story, (2) the aspects of reading is mostly affected by Short Story, and (3) the students' reaction after being taught through Short Story. The population of this research was the second year students of SMAN 1 Sindang Indramayu consisting of 30 students. One group time series design was carried out to analyze the significant difference. Besides that, questionnaire and interview were given to see the students' reaction after being taught through Short Story. There were three pre-tests (T1, T2, T3) and three posttests (T4, T5, T6) in the research. The means of the pre-tests are 52.5, 56.6, and 57. While the means of post-tests are 49, 58, and 73.1. The significant (2-tailed) value was (p=0.000, p<0.05), it showed that the hypothesis was accepted. The specific information was analyzed as the most increase of the five reading aspects and the students had positive reactions after being taught through Short Story. Therefore, Short Story can be applied and recommended as a material to teach English in reading class.

Investigating the Effect of Picture Story Book on Grade Ten Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability

As a foreign language, some students still get some difficulties to learn English, especially in English Reading. An attractive media such as Picture Story Book is expected to develop the students reading comprehension ability. The research method that was used in this research was true experimental and the research design was pot test only control group design. To gather the data the researcher used instrument in the form of multiple choice 30 questions. Effect of Guided Reading Strategy to the Reading Comprehension of Grade IX Students at SMP Negeri 12 Pematang Siantar on a Narrative Text

The research utilized quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. A total of 287 students from class IX at SMP Negeri 12 Pematang Siantar was chosen as the population. The sample was split into two classes: the experimental class (IX 1), which had 28 students and used guided reading, and the control class (IX 5), which had 28 students and utilized lectures. The research instruments were pre-test and post-test of multiple choice of narrative text. To process statistical data, the researcher utilized SPSS version 26. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk showed results of 0.200 (experimental) and 0.140 (control). The experimental group's post-test mean score exceeded the control group’s post-test by 70 points, leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis and rejection of the null hypothesis. This demonstrates that the guided reading strategy significantly enhances students' narrative text comprehension.

The Teaching Analysis of Reading Comprehension: A Case of the Eight Grade Students of SMP Pgri 01 Semarang

The objectives of the study are1) To know the teaching on reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP PGRI 01 Semarang in academic year 2016/2017, 2) To know the problems faced by the teacher in teaching learning process of reading comprehension, and 3) To know the solutions of the problem faced in teaching learning process. This research uses qualitative method. The subject of this research was three teachers of class VIII A, VIII F, and VIII G. The instruments used in this research were observation sheet and interview, so the data use was collected through observation and interview. The result of the research showed that 1) the first teacher was first participant implementing reading stage in teaching and learning process. In first participant teaching, the researcher found the problem, it was the difficulty in implementing teaching reading. The solution first participant was make strategy to make student fun. 2) the second teacher was second participant. There was only one interaction, that was the teacher explained the materials then the students kept silent, or the students read something then the teachers listened to them. 3) the third teacher was third participant. The problem it was boredom, and the solution was making question and answer for them. Teachers concluded that reading comprehension is very effective but it can not to be the key in teaching and learning process. From the data which is obtained from documentation and observation inteaching English, the objectives of English teaching can be viewed from kinds of strategy and tecnique in teaching and learning process. Suggestion are 1) for teachers, it is better for them to use Team Games Tournament to teach the students in reading comprehension, 2) for students have to study harder and try to read English more and more, and 3) for the reader to be able to get more information and experiences in the purpose of developing and improving their knowledge, especially in reading comprehension.

The Use of Book Story in Teaching Reading Comprehension

An Analysis of Factors Affecting the English Reading Comprehension of Mattayomsuksa 5 Students in Amphur Mueang, Lampang Province

This research analyses the factors affecting the English reading ability of 1,827 Mattayomsuksa 5 students attending both government and private schools in city and non-city areas of Amphur Mueang, Lampang province in the 2015 academic year. Purposive sampling of 78 students was utilized, and data were collected through a questionnaire, a reading comprehension test and interviews. Multiple factors affecting reading ability were determined and divided into the three internal factors of learning preferences, motivation, and attitude, and the three external factors of teaching techniques, texts and environment. Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and the reliability coefficient of Cronbach’s alpha was also deployed. A Study of the Tenth Grade Students’ Narrative Text Reading Comprehension Achievement at Sman Tamanan Bondowoso

The purpose of this research was to describe the tenth grade students' reading comprehension achievement of narrative texts at SMAN Tamanan Bondowoso. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The area determination method of this research was chosen by using purposive method. The subjects were the X MIA 2 students for tryout test and for reading comprehension achievement test were X MIA 1 students of SMA Negeri Tamanan Bondowoso in the 2014/2015 academic year. The data of this research were obtained from the students' reading test, documents and interview. The result of the Tenth Grade students' narrative text reading comprehension achievement was 64,28 and it was categorized as fair. The reading comprehension achievement showed that there were only 3 students (10,71%) who got "excellent" category that had range of 81-100. As many as 5 students (17,85%) got "good" category and the range was between 70-80. In addition, there were 13 students (46,43%) whose "fair" category and the range was between 60-69. There were also 7 students (25%) who obtained scores between 40-59 and got "poor" category. The last, there were no students (0%) who got "very poor" category and the range was <39.

An Analysis of Students’ Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text at Second Grade At SMAN 1 Talamau

This research was conducted based on the problems found during the teaching and learning process in class IX IPS 1 of SMAN 1 Talamau, specifically about students' understanding of narrative text. The problem found is that students cannot determine the main ideas and topics in narrative text, understand the meaning of words, understand implied information, and understand the general structure and features of language in narrative texts.This research is included in quantitative descriptive research. The population in this study were students of class IX SMAN 1 Talamau, amounting to 159 people, divided into 4 classes. While this sample is class X8 of SMAN 8 Padang. The instrument used was an objective test. Data from students' objective tests are analyzed based on indicators and then interpreted and become research findings.Based on the results of the study showed that students of class IX IPS 1 SMAN 1 Talamau: 1. The ability to write students in determining the main ideas and topics in the narrative text showed at the intermediate level of 14 people out of 23 students (60,875%). 2. The ability to understand the meaning of words in the narrative text shows at the intermediate level that is 15 people out of 23 students (65.22%). 3. The ability to understand the information implicit in the narrative text shows that at the intermediate level, there are 14 out of 23 students (60.87%). 4. The ability to understand the general structure and language features of narrative texts shows that at the intermediate level, there are 16 students out of 23 students (69.57).From the results of the above research, it can be concluded that students still experience many difficulties in understanding a text, especially in narrative texts in accordance with applicable rules. Furthermore, based on the results of this study teachers are expected to be able to provide better teaching techniques and students can do more exercises to improve students' reading comprehension abilities.
