The Analysis of Students' Difficulties in Solving Problems of Probability for 8 th Grade
Probability is one part of mathematics material that is learned in school. In Indonesia, probability is learned from Junior High School level and is continued in Senior High School level. Hence, understanding of probability's concept in Junior High School level is very important. The aim of this research is to analyze students' difficulties of 8 th Grade of SMPN 1 Prambanan Klaten in solving problems of probability. The method used in this research is descriptive method. Data collection was done based on students' work through essay test. The result shows that the difficulties which are experienced by the students in solving pobability's problem are the difficulty in understanding proportional reasoning and the difficulty in resolving misconceptions or misperceptions in probability. The misconceptions are representativeness, probability cannot be measured mathematically, misuse or extend conclusions inappropriately, inappropriate reasons, beliefs, equi-probability bias, and possible means certain.

This study aims to analyze the difficulty of learning mathematics in solving story problems based on Newman's Error Analysis. A total of 22 students were selected by 6 students to be interviewed subjects. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of tests and interviews. Data were analyzed using miles and Huberman data analysis which included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that subjects in the high category experienced difficulties at the Transformation, Process Skill, and Encoding stages. Meanwhile, subjects with moderate categories experience difficulties in the Reading, Comprehension, Transformation, Process Skill, and Encoding stages. As well as subjects in the low category also experience difficulties in the Transformation, Process Skill, and Encoding stages.
Obstacles Faced by College Students in Solving Probability Word Problems
Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika
There are many difficulties that can be identified when students solve mathematic problems especially in solving probability word problems. This study was conducted to identify the major obstacles faced by matriculation college students while solving the probability of an event word problems. Seven college students were the sample for this case study. Clinical interviews are used as a data collection. This data collection technique was selected based on the researcher’s observation on the participants as they answered the probability word problem task. The task was given during the interview session. Semi structured interviews are used to obtain in depth information. Think-aloud analysis involves observations leading to individual behaviours in the oral or nonverbal form of participants and the researcher’s field notes. Participants were found to have difficulty interpreting probabilities. There are three categories of difficulties that have been identified, namely not knowing the m...

Errors often occurred when students solve mathematical problems solving, exceedingly when students are faced with contextual story problems. Newman's procedural error analysis classified errors in solved story problems into five categories: reading errors, encoding errors, transformation errors, comprehension errors, and processing skill errors. There were several factors on errors worked by students when solving problems, such as student interest in learning and gender differences. This study aims to describe the problem-solving errors of students, both men, and women, who have high, medium, and low interest in learning to solve story problems on SPLTV material. According to the Newman’s procedure. The research type is a qualitative approach with descriptive. And the research subjects were obtained by using a purposive sampling technique. The results of this study include 1) Students of high interest in learning and are making Encoding Errors, and Processing Skill Errors, while...
Students’ Error Analysis in Completing English Math Story Problems
2020
Students will feel more difficult in dealing with story problems as they not only must determine the formula but also must be more aware in reading the questions to gain information as well as to identify what is asked in the questions. Language is a medium for communication or interaction, in other words, a language is a tool for conveying thought, idea, concept, or feeling. The English language is an international language. Most schools in Indonesia, particularly located in the urban area use English in their learning process. Many students do not master English so that they have difficulties in comprehending the lesson. This research is carried out at SMK Al Ihsan Depok with 30 students as samples. The method used in this research is a descriptive method by examining the quantitative approach to identify the total of students’ errors and qualitative approach to define the position of students’ errors as well as to identify the factors contributing to errors. The technique of data...

This research aimed to examine the difficulties and failures of eleventh-grade students regarding probability concepts. With this aim, ten different open-ended probability problems were asked to the 142 eleventh-grade students. Each of these problems requires using different basic probability concepts. It is qualitative research, and the data gathered in this study were analyzed using by descriptive analysis method. The findings indicated that many of these students had difficulties in solving probability problems and failed to apply different probability concepts to these problems. Notably, it was stated that many students had difficulties in finding all the probabilities without any missing in these problems. Besides, it is essential to develop reasoning skills since the students usually used trial-and-error method and prediction to solve probability problems.
EVALUATING STUDENTS' MISCONCEPTIONS IN WORD PROBLEMS USING NEWMAN'S ERROR ANALYSIS
This multiple case study assessed the student's difficulties in problem solving. The respondents were three students from a secondary school. These students answered a 9-item teacher-made test and underwent a structured interview. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using Newman's Error Analysis Procedure. Findings of the study revealed that grade-7 students experienced difficulties in solving word problems due to: inability to comprehend the problem, inability to transform the problem to mathematical sentence, process skills error and careless error.
Solving Strategies of Probability Word Problems among College Students
Malaysian Online Journal of Educational Sciences, 2020
Probability is a rather difficult concept. When asked about the probability of occurrence, many students perceive that they are asked to predict whether the event will occur, rather than measuring how likely, or often it will occur. Probability is not about predicting whether a particular event will take place but about determining how the probability is propagated over the possible events (Baltaci & Evran, 2016; Beitzel, Stally, & DuBois, 2011; Galavotti, 2015). Besides students, adults also face problems to think about probability and having a disability to solve probability problems. If this continues, students cannot control the probability involving daily situation of decisions and judgments, for example when assessing risk (Batanero, Chernoff, Engel, Lee, & Sánchez, 2016).

One of the material in mathematics lesson is algebra operation. Algebraic materials require the students to master the concept of algebra that becomes the basis for learning the next material. However, students still make mistakes in solving problems related to algebra operations. Includes the problem solving form of the story problem that adds difficulties for students. The purpose of this study is to find out what the mistakes and causes of mistakes made by students of class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Banda Aceh in solving the story based on Newman procedures. The approach used is a qualitative approach with the type of research is descriptive. Data collection using tests and interviews. The research involves students VIII-1, amounting to 27 students. Subjects of interview research taken 3 of 27 students class VIII-1, with the criteria of students who do a lot errors. Each subject was interviewed related to the results of his work on the algebra operation about story problem. The validity ...
